Well, right now I'm practicing Minuet no. 3 for cello (out of suzuki book 3) by Bach for my juries in May. It was my audition song for the performing arts school I go to now, so I already have it memorized. >_< So I'm pretty much moving up to the next orchestra next year. =P

I'm also practicing the hyrule field theme from ocarina of time for cello, but this one bit in the middle has me stuck:

http://img6.picsplace.to/img6/27/excerpt1.png

If anyone can help with that, I'd appreciate it. =P When I finally get that part figured out, I'm probably going to play this at a recital, because I didn't even have to annoy my private teacher to play this one. xD Zelda fanboy power. =P

It's kind of sad I haven't learned this part yet, because I've already memorized the entire song. xD

I'm currently working on this Irish medley and Symphonic Concert March (Bonelli) on my clarinet for band. Neither of these are particularly difficult, although I could clean up my runs. ;)

On the piano (erm..keyboard), I'm getting through "Bartender" from the anime, Bartender. I've been rather attached to that song lately. Heck, I'm rather fond of most of the songs from that series. Think pretty cafe music or something like that. Yay for hand-stretching, though! I can barely reach an octave on one hand, so this piece was pretty interesting to play. I keep hitting extra notes! =( Haha!

I'm currently practicing U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" on electric guitar. The intro's the hardest part, since it's a high D arpeggio and the original song uses a delay pedal. I don't have any effects except for the built-in distortion on my amp, but at least the song has easy chord changes. (D-G-Bm-A-D).

Ahh, Chopin's Polonaise ish so pretty. Too hard for me, though. ^.^ And, is it really called "two-four waltz" ? I haven't heard of it, but then again he's done quite a few waltzes.
Have currently dropped out of music school (because the french system sucks... =.= but I'm gonna get back there soon anyway) so I'm working on stuff with my nooby skills- found Gackt's "Regret" (finally!) and I'm just finishing up on Aerith's Theme from Final Fantasy 7's Piano collections. ^.^
Oh, and I'm miffed because there is absolutely zilch music sheets for Malice Mizer songs. >.> Ah well. I'll probably have to try and figure it out... *drifts off*

Well, it's real name is Waltz in A flat, Op. 42, but I hear it called the two-four waltz all the time. It is notated in 3/4, but it's so fast it's feasible to write it out in 2/4 and notate it as triplets.

Not sure if this goes here, but I was redirected here, so...
I don't know if I've posted this yet, but in my high school, we're learning this piece entitled Vesuvius. It's not too hard, though it changes its time signature from 4/4 to 9/8, back to 4/4, then to 8/8. I don't wanna post all of the time changes in their order, but those are just some of them. The rest include 3/4, 2/4, 11/8, 3/2, 1/4, and I think that's it. This forces the player to pay attention. You can't doze off, now. x3 There are so many runs in the first clarinet part, consisting an entire 3/4 measure multiple times, going from a B (In the staff), to a high F, as in above the staff. Really fun. Hehe. Then, at the end, not only are there sixteenth-note runs from the same F down to a high B, but then the first clarinet part contains the highest trill I've yet been forced to do. It's from the very same, famous high F up to a G. It's not as hard as I thought it would be. Its main tempo is at around 168, so it's really fast-paced. Loads of fun, though I struggle with the high sixteenth-notes at that speed. Not to mention that near the middle and around the end, several instruments get the chance to play these sixteenth-notes. They're almost tossed around, and it I feel that sounds like it wouldn't make too much sense, but the music CRIES OUT for it. It's like it wouldn't be Vesuvius without those phrases. And the sixteenth-notes make so much sense, it's unbelievable. Really makes me appreciate the other players even more, now.

This piece throws the melody around several instruments, and I really love it. An mp3 recording can be downloaded for free at Manhattanbeachmusic.com, if you haven't heard it yet, and wanna have a listen.

This felt more like a review. Harhar.
Maybe I'm just in complete love with the song. ^0^'

I also found this one song entitled Keleti tancok online, and apparently, it consists of Eastern dances. From what I can play, it's really awesome with loads of sixteenth-notes at a slow tempo.

Edit:
Rawr. A fire drill BLASTED through the school, so I didn't really finish. Apparently, it was a false alarm. Darn those hoodlums. D:
Anywho.

I didn't have much else to say, other than the fact that I've never heard it before, and I don't know how the piano accompaniment sounds like. It's a clarinet solo-type thing. x3 If only I knew a pianist around here, then we'd be able to practice and enjoy the song to the fullest extent. Darn it. :/

Anywho. I think that's all I wanted to say.
Hehe. Sorry for the long, boring post. cX

The Debussy is a beautiful piece ^_^ and the Chopin. I have a really good edition of that which breaks each movement down and gives you exercises to overcome all of the difficulties. *cough* I can send it you if you want as i already scanned it for someone else *cough*

and I was in the library yesterday and came across the Mephisto Waltz which I remember you telling me about a while ago. i took it out and am playing around with it- from what i can sight read of it it seems a really fun piece to play, thanks for telling me about it (Y)

I don't have int. class or jazz lessons currently so my rep is pretty small at the moment. In school band I'm playing a medly of 'Lord of the Rings' on my Tenor Saxophone. I preformed at a Cabret a couple of days ago and played 'Goodnight Julia' on my t-sax with a piano accompanying me, so I was mainly focusing on that for the last couple of weeks. If you play sax or piano I suggest you check it out, it's very beauitful:P

I'm currently working on "Winter Sleep" by Olivia (ahaha NANA! ='D) for the piano. Josh did a wonderful job transcribing the piece, too. This one should be pretty much polished in the near future. I guess I should also mention that I'm working on the vocals at the same time as well. =]

And, uh, I'm currently struggling to understand Jazz improv on my clarinet. Mind you, I've only "played" jazz for a grand total of around 5 hours spread across the time span of half a year. I'm staring at a guitar sheet right now, and according to everyone else, a solo is supposed to come out of that. Okay! XD

Oh, and I'm putting away Fantaisie Impromptu. I LOVE the song, but I can't even play eighth triplets against eighth notes, which makes this piece slightly crunchy. >.< YARGH!

20th century sonata- may be a bit hard but you're learning a concerto and a liszt etude so i reckon you could cope with a Scriabin sonata

My summer-homework:
Allegretto from "Carneval of Venice" - Genin (in fact, I'm just s'posed to make myself faster, then i'm finished with it)
Hedwig's Theme - John Williams
Harry's Woundrous World - John Willams
Yesterday - Paul McCartney or John Lennon, whoever made it...
Playing through the song in "Suzuki Flute School" Volume 1 and 2 (what I've played so far)

Other things I'm practising:
Aozora
Beauty and the beast - Allan Menken*
My heart will go on - James Horner*
A whole new world - Alan Menken*
Can you feel the love tonight - Elton John*
Under the sea - Alan Menken*

And I borrowed some books from the library earlier today, so I have to check those if there's something i want to practise. I'm pretty sure there is so my checklist with song I played this summer will be pretty long this year (these last few years my teacher has been a bit dissapointed since I haven't practised much)

*From a book I got, so I just choose some random songs I haven't played yet when I looked through it a week ago to choose what to practise this summer. There's mostly known song from movies or big hits in Sweden in it, so that's why it's mostly disney-songs.

Whoo, you've got a lot on your hands for this summer! ;)
Just shows how damn lazy I am. I'm still grovelling around on Debussy's Reverie and I need to find Malice Mizer's *Hamon Kyousoukyoku* sheet music soon, or I think I might get violent. ^.^ I mean, that group must put their damn sheet music in some coded super-duperly-secret safe somewhere in MI5 headquarters. Where are all of Gackt's piano solos!? And they're all so hard to transcribe, too. *angsts*
...ahem, apart from that. For the moment I seem to be in one of those moods where you find some awesome sheet music on the net, print it out, play the first three bars... and then hear something really nice, find the sheet music on the net, play the first three bars... and so on and so forth. For the moment I'm collecting Final Fantasy VII & Gackt stuff, which frankly isn't all that hard but it's so fun to play. ^.^

I can add two whole and one half book with sheets to that I wrote just yesterday. It's over a hundred pieces, so i won't write down all those, and I'll start practising everything from tomorrow onwards.

I made this schedule (I made it this morning - it's evening where I live) so I'm playing a seventh of all pieces in one block and a seventh in another block and a thrid seventh in a thrid block, etc. I think it'll work real well, since I like knowing exactly what to play in which order and not playing the same things everyday.

@Thorn-

Yeah, since I was starting to excell at the first movment's exposition (only thing I'm working on in the sonata, other than the B section of the 3rd movment) I ordered the entire edition of the Sonata, and have taken to the liking that the 2nd movment isn't actually ALL THAT hard as I thought; the 4th seems to be the most challenging of the 4 movments, actually. And I don't have the Op. 32 preludes, but I have recordings, and that one is a good prelude too.

I'm also starting Mazeppa!

to me, Bach is like scales- dull and boring and does your head in, but you have to grin and bear it because it helps your technique. i have to say that because ive been playing the G minor prelude and fugue for a few months now it has grown on me and i have come to like it- especially the fugue.

Pantalaimon10

Precisely. Even the ever-so-popular two part inventions are little more than a somewhat pleasing jumble of notes, even though they will admittedly make you that much cleaner.

im the kind of person who tends to only learn stuff they hear and think 'wow, thats a nice piece'

I prefer doing that too, but my teacher thinks that since my ear is supposedly so good, it would hamper my ability to learn a song by reading the notes. (I don't know a single piano player that can't learn by ear.. except for her.) <_< So, consequently, I go through about 5:1 songs I don't like to vice versa.

I could only guess that hamper = damper in this case. I completely disagree with that remark; if you have a good ear it doesn't mean it will stunt that talent if you learn pieces the conventional way by reading sheet music. I have a very good ear (high relative pitch sense) and my abilty to learn pieces by ear hasn't declined at all since I've starting learning pieces by notes.

That remark is 100% b.s. <_<

Pantalaimon10

are we talking about a violin piece here or the G minor fugue from WTK 1?

if the latter, then it's pretty easy once you've worked out the structure and where the subjects/countersubjects appear. I wouldnt say it was overwhelming at all.

if you mean a violin piece then i cant really help- although surely the same thing applies to every fugue- work out the structure and where the subjects are and you've virtually cracked it.

I'm using Op 31 nr 2 as a college audition piece (was easier to memorise than Les Adieux)- I love the first and third movements!

I've changed a couple of other audition pieces too- I'm now doing Chopin Nocturne in C minor instead of the 3rd Scherzo, and im doing Debussy Prelude 7 from book 1 instead of Feux d'artifice.

After auditions im going to relearn all 24 Debussy Preludes- there was a time when i could play them all and its sad that ive lost some of them. And I might look at some Chopin-Godowsky Etudes (despite them being total bitches)

I have stopped playing the piano, at the moment. It seems I stuck and can't even look at sheets without realizing how bad I am at playing the piano. And I played at my schools grand yesterday and ended up half dead because I couldn't reach the notes.
So for the moment flute is my only passion, I guess...

Oh well... I'm practising a duet, and a wedding march (I don't know if it called that in English) from Sweden.
My teacher and i will play alot of duets my two last years as a student, because I like duets and need to practise reading notes alot so i can make it to a band or something when I have turned nineteen and can't have two lessons my until then weekly grouplesson.

Well, for PianoArts I need to "professionaly" record a video of the first movment of the concerto, and I'm going to submit the first movment (howver, I'm learning the entire sonata still) of the Chopin as well.

I'm sponsored by Steinway, and they have "stae-of-the-art" sound and video equipment, and a small recital hall in their Gallery. =)

For some reason I thought you had already played that... @_@

But if you haven't, it'll definately be close as to whether it's ready for the 9th... but you're kind of amazing, so it'll be good.

I've completely mastered Chopin's 2/4 Waltz, so I'm now focusing on:

Sonata Pathetique, Beethoven
Dante Sonata (still...)
Fantasie Impromptu, Chopin (not near as difficult as everyone thinks it is, this)

I've finally realized that I can get so much more done if I don't try to work on 20 songs at once... >_<

Definitely playing the Ravel Toccata and the Liszt's La Campanella.

Third one is not going to be the ones above, but either the Beethoven 32 Variations or Haydn Variations in f minor. I need more choices... O.o...

Thorn
October 22nd, 2007, 11:10 am
i would have gone with the Ballade over La Campanella

Toccata and La Campanella will be tough to work on together as both of them are, essentially, show pieces. yes the Ballade is also virtuosic, but its more espressive with it.

then i would pick the Haydn. better to have something relatively easier in comparison to the rest of the stuff you're learning.

@ Mazeppa- i look forward to these videos (Y)

@ Pantalaimon- ive done a few sight readings of the whole thing over the past couple of years and ive pretty much gotten the slow sections how i want them. a lot of the runs are just dom/dim 7th chords, so its mainly expression that i have to work on. and the double octave passage at the end is a bastard.

the thing with the B minor sonata is that performances fall into three categories: the kind after which you cant leave the platform because the applause never stops, the kind where people fall asleep because there isnt enough expressive content to keep their attention for the whole 25-30 mins, and the kind that sounds like a war with the piano during which people have to step outside to relieve their splitting headache.

i think mine currently falls into the 2nd and/or 3rd category. the real question is can i get it to 1st category standard in just over a month.

i read about one performance of it where the pianist merged the exposition with the recap and once he realised he was near the end of the piece within like 8 mins, he stopped, turned to the audience and apologised then started again.

Beethoven- Pastoral Sonata
Chopin- Nocturne in C minor Op 48 nr 1

2nd round- 20th century

Bax- Winter Waters
Sculthorpe- Night Pieces

Final round- Recital

Liszt/Saint Saens- Danse Macabre
Debussy- Cloches a travers les feuilles

my idea for the recital was to have a kind of theme- Danse Macabre depicts the dead rising from their graves to dance on Halloween night, and Cloches a travers les feuilles was based on an old French tradition of ringing church bells on All Saints Day to guide wandering spirits to the afterlife after Halloween.

Yes, the Chopin Etudes are something else, really. My teacher says to me, "Hey, if you complain that you want perfect technique, tackle all of the Chopin Etudes." XD

At this point, I really believe that; hoping to get (any, edition, their etudes) Op. 10 and Op. 25 for Christmas, along with some Liszt Etudes. Actually, my teacher wants me to tackle one of the Paganini etudes by Liszt. I think I'm going to start on "VI: Theme and Variations" when I get some free time. . and, of course, the score.

Thorn
December 11th, 2007, 11:35 am
My friend learned all 27 of the Chopin Etudes from scratch in 3 weeks. If you're willing to practise each individual etude solidly for 9 hours then someone at the level to be able to tackle them in the first place can actually do it. He very kindly made me a copy of his notes on exactly how he did it too- im not going to waste space by posting it, but PM me anyone whose interested.

@ Mazeppa- try and get the Salabert edition of Op 10 and Op 25- they have an english translation of the Cortot notes on them and exercises and stuff to help. I have a scan of the english translation of one of the two (think its Op 25) which i can send you if you want so you can judge its usefulness for yourself.

If you're thinking of doing the 6th Liszt Paganini Etude, i would look at the Brahms Variations on that theme (Op 35) instead- they are much nicer than Liszt's.

also looking at the Ibert Flute Concerto. i learned the first two movements before i gave up playing the flute, but the other week i suddenly wanted to play again, so i'm recapping the first two mvts and beginning the third (which is a complete bastard)

I'm playing:
Sonatina - Kulau (or something like that)
March - Bach
Elfin Dance - Grieg
Roses and Butterflies - Making April

The classical music is for my CM test coming up in April. The other song I'm playing because I want to. And we're playing "The Great Steamboat Race" in my school band.

*sigh* Despite the fact that I know pretty much everything in the Hanon book, there's still a lot to be said for my technique. I guess I just have a fear of becoming unbearably irritating around the house because I play exercises too much. -_- (I'm such a softie... >_<)

Not saying anything down upon you, but I'd really upgrade to a different technique book; Hannon is really basic, in my opinion; I've been looking for other good Exercises to actually practice, but nothing came up. . . Luckily I found out about the Liszt Exercises. I ordered them this Sunday, and they'll be coming in around next week. =)

Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata 14 (Moonlight), opus 27 no 2

I haven't figured out how I am going to fit 14 pages on my piano yet, I think I'll need someone to flip em for me XD

Currently on "Lonely Man" theme from the late 1970s "Incredible Hulk" series.

I have tons of sheets for different songs printed out, but I think I'm going to take up "Recollection" from Final Fantasy 11 next (the MMO... I used to play for a few years, so I want to get some songs from that down). So many awesome songs to learn... it's hard to nail down one and stick with it for several weeks without getting diverted by something else that strikes my interest. I've got the first few measures of "Aerith's Theme" from FF7 down, but it will be a while until I have the whole thing down (plus, I need a full keyboard... getting sick of this 62-key unweighted business).

I can see where you're coming from, and I'll look into that. But basic though Hanon may be, it's definitely effective.

memorise it?

In time I suppose, though it'd take a whole lot of memorization, especially for this piece, mixing up lines would be an easy mistake to make.

I really need to get a technique book and start learning technique, what would be good for a pianist who can play pretty well, but doesn't have any formal technique training?

Here's what I'm practicing a.t.m.

Scherzo di Notte
http://www.squaresound.com/arrangements/sibelius/kh/joshbarron_khpc_scherzonotte.php

Hollow Bastion
http://www.squaresound.com/arrangements/sibelius/kh/joshbarron_khpc_hollowbastion.php

and Scorpion Fire / Sasoribi
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WlGQBYw9qnA

And no, I can't play the last one at full speed (maybe the first 2/5 or so). I'll probably make my own arrangement that has superfluous notes taken out so it's actually playable.

Practice? What's practice? Lol - I haven't had any time to touch my poor clarinet in between band sessions! But there, we're doing two new medlies: Ray Charles and Mamma Mia - although there tends to be a lot of singing of ABBA tunes when we're doing that one. Oh, and we've got all the rest of our music as well of course ;)
