I'm right now currently playing:

Megumeru (Clannad Opening Theme) on the guitar
Dissonance on the flute
Paradise Lost on the piano

Paradise Lost is almost like writing a death wish for myself and the piano. The song is really crazy to play. TT

You mean Etaroko?

I'm guessing that animefans12 is referring to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PR1p4_5Aro), rather than Etaroko's composition.

Let's see if I can remember everything now...

Finlandia (Sibelius)
Humoresque (Dvorak)
Minuet (Bach)
Melancholic Fantasy (Mendelssohn)
Sound of Music
My favorite things (from the same musical as above)
Beauty and The Beast
Allegretto from some opera I for some reason have suddenly forgotten which it is and by whom
Hedwig's Theme (from Harry Potter, you know)

All on the flute. I probably forgot something now, but whatever. Anyway, most is just things I'm rehearsing in case I would suddenly get a job and need to be prepared, while some are new songs.

Also, trying to play To Zanarkand on the piano. Not going to well, since I don't own one and live pretty far away from my other where there is a keyboard and even farther away from an actual piano. :(

Technically they're fairly easy in terms of rhythm and notation. Making them musical is a challenge though :heh: What I really mean though that if you break it town they're fairly even and flowing. I'm not saying that they're easy that you can just sight-read them, I'm not up to that stage yet :)

Added some other songs to play for my school's Celtic Band's upcoming concert.

Trying to get all these pieces up to about, crotchet = 180bpm on my harp :) (note the trying :heh:).

Horse's Brawl - Traditional French
Campbell's Farewell to Redcastle - Traditional Scottish

Bach -- Prelude & Fugue No. 13 in F# [WTK BK I]
Beethoven -- Appasionata
Schumann -- Allegro in B minor, Op. 8
Scriabin -- Etudes, Op. 65

We're working on the same Beethoven =P

I personally detest Schumann, but the Bach and Scriabin have some amazing moments in them. Are you learning all three of the op.65?

I have dropped Chopin Ballade 4 on my teacher's advice that the Beethoven and Ligeti I am working on are pretty intense and whilst the Ballade is contrasting for over half of its duration it still gets pretty big.

So now I'm learning the following for my final recital in the summer:

Beethoven: Sonata Op 57
Szymanowski: Metopes (possibly complete, possibly minus Nausicaa which is a LOT harder than it sounds)
Ligeti: Automne a Varsovie

She suggested I throw a different Chopin in there so I have more than Beethoven from "traditional" repertoire, but to be honest I spent a lot of last year on a couple of his Nocturnes so if I am not doing the Ballade (which is more than just "a Chopin piece", it's closer to pure musical and compositional perfection), I don't think I'll bother.

@clarinetist I am not too worried about it since i have it firmly under my belt and the Dello Joio is really easy. The Milhauds, like the Debussy, i have already had to play with an orchestra before so it just a matter of reviewing it for the up coming concert. I really wish I could do the Finzi concerto though, but for some reason it doesnt seem very popular amongst orchestra directors for some reason. If you haven't yet seen in check out the Kurpinski concerto, that concerto kicks so much... Well it is really really easy and is so much fun to play. Also very flashing but finding recordings and orchestral scores is vary hard to do.

clarinetist
February 11th, 2011, 03:06 pm
Yeah, the Finzi Concerto isn't very well known - everyone at the University I attend only plays the Bagatelles (it's as if the professor expects everyone to play that piece more than anythiing else). Personally, I like the Concerto.

I haven't heard of the Kurpinski - I'll look into that.

I didn't know Saint-Saens wrote piano concerti... I am going to listen to them now!.

He also wrote a very nice fantasia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZj3ePlzmqU). I have it, but it's too difficult for me to attempt just yet.

Has anyone else picked up "Thank you for being born", from Umineko? It's pretty straightforward, but I'm curious to know if others also think that it's better when played simply. The transcription I'm working from seems rather...unnecessarily difficult.

I got these suggestions from my professor at my school that I'll be going to in a couple of weeks...yes, he was late in sending these -___-

Bach: Prelude and Fugue in c-sharp minor, WTC I
Beethoven: Sonata in D Major, op. 10, no. 3
Liszt: Transcendental Etude No. 10 in f minor
Schumann: Sonata No. 2 in G minor
Barber: Ballade

I'm supposted to play the Liszt in a studio recital in October celebrating Liszt's 200th birthday... so I'm going to be working like a mad-man on that, as well as the Saint-Saens (5th) concerto for preliminary rounds in late October. I *might* ask to see if we can change the Barber piece, however, I'm probably just going to stick with these. I need to just learn more pieces and play the ones that my teacher suggests for me.

Anyway, that's my update. :)

Chopin: Mazurkas (Bb major, Op. 7, #1; a minor, Op. 7, #2; C major, Op. 7, #5; g minor, Op. 67, #2).

Clarinet: ... so the thing is, the University I attend just made a professor switch (which was a great choice, no sarcasm) and this professor is REALLY going to make the studio work hard in comparison to the last one - I'm a tad scared (tbh, haha) yet I'm excited. :)

Big change in repertoire. I actually have either put on hold/ dropped all of the repertoire that I mentioned beforehand. I've been focusing on learning and memorizing pieces as quickly as possible, of course with great quality. This is my objective for the next couple months (as of now... more will be added, due to preparation for Freshman jury in 3rd term):

Liszt-- The Chapel of William Tell (Completed-- time learned: two weeks)
-- Legend No.2, St. Francis Walking on the Waves (working on... target time next Tuesday for studio class)
-- Spanish Rhapsody (starting next week... target time end of term, or end of November)
-- Dante Sonata (starting and learning over 5 week winter break... most likely along with starting other pieces)

...Yes, my teacher has been pushing me, and I asked for it-- be aware when you ask that of your college piano teacher xD

For Piano, I'm working on Dango Daikazoku (Clannad). Except I've made some edits to the left handed part. Don't get me wrong, I love the song the way it originally was, but I wanted to make it a tad different, so I did. But I did all the edits in my head while looking at the original sheets. You probably wouldn't even notice except for right before the part I've changed to right handed only.

Well, super change to my plans for a Liszty Winter break. As much as me and my teacher thought it'd be fun, we both agreed that it'd be best to complete my Bach and classical sonata for my juries. So, for the time being:

Bach: Prelude and Fugue in c-sharp minor, WTK I
Haydn: Sonata No. 62 in Eb Major

And I'm also *finally* taking on the Liszt Technical Exercises everyday when I'm done practicing those two pieces.

P.S. I'm also practicing standard technique (Major and harmonic/melodic minor scales...M/m, V7 and dim arpeggios) with the lights turned off, eyes closed, and face towards the ceiling. Sounds a little crazy, but it's already doing wonders for me maneuvering around the keyboard.

My teacher wants me to do a diploma, and after a quick browse at the syllabus I have been told to get an idea for a 45 minute programme. She has suggested I have a look at the following over Christmas (not learn all of them, just play around and see what works and what I like/dislike):

Bach/Busoni: Toccata and Fugue in D minor
Debussy: Images
Ligeti: Musica Ricercata
Liszt: Vallee d'Obermann
Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet op.75
Ravel: Jeux d'eau

At the moment, the Bach seems a bit out of place to me, but then diploma examiners may frown on a purely 19-20th century programme... she advised against using a Classical Sonata because they are so unforgiving of mistakes (the Sonatas themselves, not the examiners)

New repertoire:

Satie - Gymnopedie #1
Chopin - Waltz in b minor, Op. 69 #2 (then the c# minor waltz once I learn this one)

I have (finally) decided on Licentiate program:

Bach- Prelude and Fugue in Eb minor (WTK Bk 1)
Chopin- Scherzo nr.3 in C# minor
Debussy- Images set 2 (all 3)
Ligeti- Musica Ricercata mvts 3,4,6 and 8

So this will be my practise list for the next however many months!

Really hope that I can do piano lessons next semester. Last I heard, if I can, here's my repertoire:

Chopin - Waltz in c# minor (Op. 64 #2)
Bach - Two-Part Invention (C major, #1)
Ravel - La vallee des cloches (I'm not sure what makes him think I can play this, haha...)

The Ravel isn't too difficult when you actually sit down and study it. Technically, the only difficult part is the hemiola in the first/last section. Musically it's all about colour and melodic projection/voicing. It's probably one of the better intermediate pieces out there for working on those things, I can see why he would set it.

I've gotten my focus back and am working on the following:

Liszt- Harmonies du Soir
Albeniz- Triana
Fujikura- Deepened Arc

Thorn - guess what? You were right. :) The Ravel is surprisingly easy for me to sightread, and I was thinking I would really struggle with this piece. :D Just some practice now...

Glad to hear you're getting on well with it- the middle section is especially gorgeous! Once you've sorted out the first bit it's incredibly straightforward.

My own practice is going alright. I have been surprised with the Albeniz; I thought it was one of those lighthearted pieces that looked more difficult than it was- it's actually incredibly complicated and my right arm was in quite a bit of pain yesterday after spending a few hours on it D:

All this talk of easy repertoire.

I'm dying just trying to practice the last page of my Prokofiev... as well as a million sections from the Rachmaninoff some of the Schubert and the Bach in it's entirety is just tricky as ever. The Debussy etude and (of course) the Satie are the easiest. My god, this year is going to be crazy... X_X

Best of luck on your stuff guys! And I know of Albeniz stuff... a studio-mate of mine played a set of pieces this year... none of them looked appetizing for sight-reading at all.
