Some good stuff there, but not a lot of anything much challenging for a College Application, don't you think?

Hey, I'm only a freshman, give me time. I'll have more than that in four years.
EDIT: And actually, I've seen people play a couple of these (Two Four Waltz and October Night) for their senior concert. Certainly good enough for the application, even if the others aren't.

Jam Session
Oh, and if any of you have some free time click here (http://65.31.93.20/songs/February%203rd%20Jams/) for a jam session I had on Feburary third (this past saturday). Musicians as goes :
Guitar- Kyle (Brother)
Drums/Recording/Mixing- Jamie (Cousin)
Bass- Ethan (Cousin)
Keyboard- Seth (Me)
Enjoy.
NOTE: The Keyboard sucked, and for most of them I think it was my doing who came up with the chord progressions to jam on--Latin and Reggae are my favorites; I came up with Latin, but not Reggae, Ethan did the Reggae chords, which were fun to jam on.
NOTE2: This is also my first jam in a group, which I think I did pretty well in it for a virgin-played like this. Lol. Only times I've 'jammed' was by myself or with my brother a couple times on some Iron Maiden progressions, or a song I made which we comped on.

here's the Liszt Dante Sonata i promised to record/upload
http://rapidshare.com/files/16037030/Liszt-_Apres_une_lecture_de_Dante-_Fantasia_quasi_Sonata.wma.html
it's based on Dante's Divine Comedy in which he travels through Inferno, where the souls of the damned are eternally punished, Purgatory, where souls are purged of the 7 deadly sins before ascending to Paradise, which Dante also travels through.
the music itself doesnt go through the 3 realms in order, but alternates. Inferno is characterised by the falling octaves (right at the beginning) and the more violent, virtuosic passages. Purgatory by the passages of slowly falling chromatic notes, and Paradise by the more lyrical sections.

Lol, I know full well a lot of that stuff isn't too hard, but I'm planning on making a seperate CD for each year in high school. That's just the freshman one. ^_^
NOTE: This is completely random, but this site is really motivating me. Like, I was already planning on majoring in music, but seeing so many people here that KNOW what they're doing, it spurs me to kick my own ass so I can be that good. ^_^

Ugh, I finally made it work and listened. I hate you so much because I'm such a crappy piano player, and yet you've been teaching yourself for a very short time and I've been taking lessons for 9 years! :P

Ok. Here's a recording of me playing the "Mozart Clarinet Quintet" (a.k.a. Clarinet Quintet K. 581 by Mozart).
Please take note: it's not perfect. I'm only a 4 year player on clarinet and I'm playing "college" stuff. The spit tone I don't know how to control yet (nor does anyone else at my level). Plus my program adds a random "reverb" (note that it's reverb in quotes), which causes my playing to be VERY soft, when I'm only one inch away from the microphone.
I know I rushed on some sixteenth notes here and there, but what do you expect out of a 4 year player :P ? Most of the 16th note tounging parts I slured.
~Recordings on Allegro and Rondo movements (Clarinet Concerto in B FLAT K. 622) coming up.
EDIT: -WILL BE POSTED LATER-.... (I heard some really bad spit tones :bleh: ).

February 20th, 2007, 08:47 pm
To cure your spit/water problem: suck it all out during rests or before/after pieces. Sounds gross, but playing clarinet or oboe, you can't really complain.

Not bad at all ^^ I do think you use too much pedal though.
And I find it funny how sometimes people wave their hands around a lot when they film themselves playing piano. Is this to make yourself look more expressive? lol
I was listening to my early recordings of my compositions (made 2-4 years ago). I really want to rerecord them, and maybe make more compositions (haven't composed for pleasure since I started uni). Maybe I'll make it a summer project of mine ^^
KaitouKudou
April 15th, 2007, 05:30 pm
I don't do that to make myself more expressive, it just comes naturally cause it was the way I was taught. Also, if I don't do that during fast octave, my hands tireout really easily so it is a way for me to get short breakts during fast passages.

i'm currently working on gravity by yoko kanno. it was far too low for me to sing so i put in a minor.. as i said work's still in progress so i'll post one part of it. i will post the full version when i'm done with it but i'd like you to give me some advice on the singing and the piano playing. i still have to improve a lot!
so i hope you will like it and / or tell what i should change :)

I see a lot of potential here. True, you do have room for improvement, but it's not really my place to give advice on voice... Piano sounds fine but you could (and so could we all) work on playing all the notes at exactly the same time.
Very pretty song. I'm looking forward to the rest of it. =)

Wow they were both really awesome, but I liked Bhemian best. I think if the acoustics were better it would sound ten times better. The violin was made to project in concert halls as well as in the streets of European cities. I like your vibrato as well, it is difficult to get a decent sounding vibrato on violin, but yours was better then many otehrs I've heard.

Thank you very much! ^^ Most of the compliments I get are from people who don't play any instrument, so they don't even know what a vibrato is. xD Its refreshing to hear intelligent critiques every once in a while.

Neat piece - really idiomatic sounds of Ravel. At first I thought it was some sort of piece based on Couperin, but Wikipedia indicates that the pieces are more based around the general idea of the Baroque French Suite.
Anyways, here's a modest little something from me:
"Prelude (http://www.esnips.com/doc/02b52077-b7dd-4c68-af4b-93bdf281951f/Prelude)" by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

1)if it's digital(aka has a headphone port) then you could use line-in
if it's not(aka acoustic) then you could use a microphone
2)I'm assuming you just make a new thread in the "compositions" forum

Whoo, you did post it in the end then Thorn ~ I think it's a beautiful piece, I should try and get a hold of it myself soon.
huh? which piece?
@ Jill-Jênn: your Ravel Toccata is amazing- some good bravura playing and you have a decent memory which is always good ^_^
just some advise: speedwise you probably played this in about 3:30-40 where the general duration of it is 4 mins. so take a bit more time with it. i know what this piece can be like: the first 3-4 bars are so much easier than the rest of the piece, so you race through them, then even in the second line you're thinking crap, ive got to keep going at this speed now. so get a reasonable speed ticking in your head before you begin.
the majority of the piece is either p or pp, and you played it all in f. i know its hard to play it quietly and have all the notes sound at the same time: a bit of background info for you: Ravel only ever played French pianos which have a significantly lighter touch than any other make, so all this intricate writing you find in the Toccata, the Miroirs, Gaspard de la Nuit, would have been so much easier to get at the dynamic he wanted on the pianos he played.
a good way of getting this dynamic is to practise the whole thing at a stupidly slow tempo in 'ppp'. the minute you go above 'ppp' mark it in your score, go back to the beginning, and this time do a little diminuendo when you're coming up to the mark you have made. its incredibly tedious work, but it makes you more aware of your dynamic levels.
in the 'un peu moins vif' section, the tempo sounded the same to me. it needs to go slower. this is also one of those places you need to come right down to pp.
the start of the middle section where the mood becomes more dreamy; i think you did really well- the dynamic level dropped and the melody was nicely phrased.
the ending sounds like you panicked a bit. the pause before it begins is great for giving your fingers a slight rest and taking a nice deep breath, so use it. to steal advice that was given to me about the ending; it needs to be ecstatic, not bombastic. in other words, keep in mind that this is Ravel you are playing and not Liszt.
but like i said at the start, well done on this. most pianists just dont play it so you are very brave for learning it, and i wouldnt say it was beyond you at all; just bear in mind the points i made.
i hope this post will be of some help. im sorry if it sounds a bit critical, but im just passing on everything ive learned about this piece.

@ Jill-Jênn: your Ravel Toccata is amazing- some good bravura playing and you have a decent memory which is always good ^_^Thanks!
so get a reasonable speed ticking in your head before you begin.I think that behind the scenes I was thinking of a tempo of 132, then on the scene, 144, and when I was sit, it was 152 in my head and I didn't even remarked :D
the majority of the piece is either p or pp, and you played it all in f.Yes, maybe except the "dream part".
its incredibly tedious work, but it makes you more aware of your dynamic levels. Thanks, I hate tedious work, I haven't played this piece slowly for a while, it's boring me (I know, it's a little childish, but maybe in some years I won't think like that anymore :)).
the pause before it begins is great for giving your fingers a slight rest and taking a nice deep breath, so use it.Haha, if you wait too long, people starts clapping hands :D
but like i said at the start, well done on this. most pianists just dont play it so you are very brave for learning it, and i wouldnt say it was beyond you at all; just bear in mind the points i made.It was for a contest, 3 years ago.
i hope this post will be of some help. im sorry if it sounds a bit critical, but im just passing on everything ive learned about this piece.Your advice is gold, thanks a lot!

What do you use to record yourself, Mazeppa? It looks like a professional record.
I'm even thinking you didn't played it. Sorry if I'm wrong.
Beautiful, anyway.
Edit: Besides, you're playing the piano for only 3 years... It can't be you.

That was me playing it, yes. I had to record it for an audition for the Chopin Youth Piano Competition (http://www.geocities.com/chopin_competition/). I was recorded at the Steinway Gallery in the recital hall (see link in my signature) the recorder and mic. is pretty good, and I was playing on a Model B Steinway.
EDIT : I just saw you're edit. That is me, and I take that as a compliment.

Don't be so hard on yourself:lol: For the Shakugan no Shana songs there were parts that the tone quality was really good. I especially liked Akai Namida. My suggestion though is that you should play more songs made for trumpet. Some of the songs you played clashed with the anime music. If you practice alot though I think you could be a great trumpet player^_^

Anyway, I'm trying to find out the best recording instrument which makes the violin sound proper on youtube.

Correct your typo: "Gravitation" ^^
In Tooi Kono Machi de, for instance at bar 12, you play "G-E" instead of "E-D". And you make this mistake in all your performance ^^ Except that, the age of the piano and the rhythm at some places, that's rather good ;)

wow that's cool...it'd b even cooler if u had a 100 year old organ in your house...0.0
careful not to distort your hand position when playing...like in the intro to the cardcaptors song you were playing with your pinky but your index + middle fingers were up...(actually i had the opposite problem...when i used to play scales my pinky kept popping up =.=") but yea. if you pay attention to it then it'll go away xD
and HollowRiku, your fingers actually blurred in the video...-O.O- -bows down in amazement-

i've only recently acquired a liking for jazz music, mostly on the clarinet
well i guess going to vocal class at 7:20 every other morning paid off xD
wonderful playing btw, your hand form makes me envious >.< very nicely swung, both piece pieces... you do posses the spirit of jazz, tho i say exaggerate just a tad more... after all jazz is all about fun!! in shuffle or boogie, i think your left hand is slightly too heavy, but other than that bravo!
p.s.: i'd love to live in Marseille (stares w/ jealousy) Dumas made it sound so interesting

Hello! You want to hear me playing? It has been a while since I exercised daily (more than 10 years) but I have made something for this thread, picking the most anime/manga tune I still remember from an ancient game for Amiga called RODLAND.
Pardon me for my non-technique.
Rodland Game Over tune (http://digilander.libero.it/fungusmediocre/fsx-rodland.ogg)
And this is what remains from my Bach-technique (but it's very compressed so it sounds quite bad)...

My first attempt at recording my singing.
Endless Love
Recording tips, singing tips?
Note: I know nothing of Chinese singing phonetics.
Move away from the Microphone when you get louder. It'll prevent redlining the recording (e.g. the climax and falling action of the song).
Also try singing out your notes a bit more confidence. There's a lot of times when you hit a syllable, but you either move away from it or add vibrato too soon, and it sounds like you're bending your tone to meet the pitch. You have good tone, you just need a bit more air and projection. I think that by doing that, you'll fit in with the style of the song a bit more.
KaitouKudou
February 14th, 2012, 06:30 pm
Great tips! Thanks alot. I noticed the wavering notes and my voice sounding weak issue but I didn't know how to fix them. I think over using vibrato was definately one of the major issues. I'm still getting use to the mic as well. The mic is stationary so I have move my self back and forth in my seat.:D

I will look around for you a good microphone. Shure make some real cheap microphones. I have a Shure Beta Green it works okay. Usually any microphone around $100 dollars is a good bet. I will be posting my cello pieces in a week.

I said I would post some cello piece, but I need to purchase a microphone and some software for my iPhone. I went to the Apple store and they told me what I need to record. It will be another week or two. I really only need Garage band software for my iPhone. It is only $10 dollars. The on board microphone n the iPhone should be enough. The extra microphone should not be needed.

If you want to try the bare-bones approach, you can get a decent USB condenser mic and just record into Audacity. Less than a hundred bucks, and a lot less complicated, since you won't need a preamp or audio interface.
I personally use the Blue Yeti (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VA464S), but there are a quite a few options in the $100 or less range, like the MXL-TEMPO_SK for example (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OC5WMG) (I've seen a few good reviews of it in various places). Good luck with whatever route you take. Looking forward to hear you play something.

I really appreciate the information. Audacity sounds very easy to use. I will make sure I pick up a copy. I had a look at that Blue Yeti and I notice the excellent reviews. Since I already own Cubase 7 Elements I will eventually get an Steinberg Audio interface. I am picking the CI2 interface with a Yamaha foot pedal.
I just downloaded Audacity; and it works already! I have a U37 mic and it seems to do fine. Thanks a lot! I will try a cello recording when the morning comes!

Here it is a recording of me. It is my first attempt at recording. I am playing "lullaby" on the cello. I did not get every note, but I am tired of excuses and it is time to post something. I used Audacity instead of Cubase 7 because Cubase is hard for me to use. The mic I am using is an old Shure beta green and that mic really sucks! File is attached

Here we go again. I used Audacity with a U37 dynamic mic instead of Cubase 7 and the focusrite 2i4 interface. I am really am not in the mood to learn Cubase 7 right now. I rushed and made this recording, but I decided to get things started. File attached as mp3. I had to download LAME to make the mp3. It was easy to install and worked right away with Audacity. File attached. This is the first of many installments. SO EXPECT BETTER MUSIC FROM ME! THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST TRY.

This is the first installment of a song I got from the Please Save My Earth anime. I used the cello and lowered the melody two octaves to bass clef to suit my cello. I do not have to play in the treble clef part of the cello; I can only play in the bass clef part of the instrument. I can play up to the D just above middle C. I have only been playing for four months. It will take a couple of months more to play the song completely because I must use extended reaches to gain the A and E flat notes in the song. I will try to fake it until I can make it.

More music coming soon. I am studying cello with a private instructor for an hour lesson every week. I am improving. I am now able to practice with a metronome. Expect some more better sounding music soon!

Ahh... I really love the sound of the cello. I guess I can post some of my playing as well (once those neighbours stop drilling holes in the wall -_-)

Very nice! I will post another song today as well. I may use audigy like I did last time. I am a little camera shy, yet I will give the camera a try. I will be right back with another audio or video.
