This is an old song wich I made a couple of years ago.
I got the Idea for the song from the title screen song of Final Fantasy IX.

It should be for flutes but the mp3 is some organ...

I think the sheets for this song got erased when my compy last crashed, sorry =(.

you could take the midi, open it in some program and look at it that way.

Dear fellow Swede,

The melody is very instant and effective. It gives me almost an identical feeling as the mentioned FFIX-title screen theme. The mp3'd version though, I wasn't so fond of -- The recorders are the way to go here. Perhaps you could continue it with an interesting modulation? Or you could introduce a second section, with orchestration :)

Good luck!

Hello all!

Its been a while since I last posted.

first off, ´Noir7 your ideas are always great, and yeah it is really a recorder song nothing else. I have no good recorder vst-instruments.

I bring you all love and a little tune.

It sounds pretty as an overture type of thing. Though I thought there could've been more depth to it.

Definately not bad for 2 hours of work... Anyway, I agree somewhat to what Dot said about the depth thing, it just got interesting before it ended. If it were a little longer and presented itself more it would grab the listener's attention a little bit better. But yeah, I did like the progression from the beginning to the end, short as it was.

Ignoring that previous post...

I think it would be better if there were dynamics involved, especially if the beginning started really quietly. Also, I think you should add some more to both the sections of the piece.

Edit: and I did like it, I just think those are some ways in which it could be made better.

Its been a while since I last posted some songs...

Further: this song is unfinished and I think it will continue to be so. Whats missing is lyrics and main melody =) its a song that I made for a band that me and a friend was starting, we never really started off though so this is merely a concept.

CORE Nemesis: this is for the last stage in a retro shoot em up my friend is making. I relly like the chords in this one, I think its awesome, what do you think?

That rocked out loud! Some of the beats were highly influenced by modern rock/punk hits, although I think it has a nice sinister character wrapped around itself. The 00:30 close-off could've been made smoother (yet still having a sudden effect) by leaving the drums hanging with the help of their own reverb.

Getting shot in the chest: This is a really strange song... What it is to depict? well take a guess. Its a mellow song and it sounds quite sad, but the essence of it isn´t...:heh:

Walking mist: probably my worst named piece, however if you have played Diablo 2 then this might sound familiar, it does to me anyway. I don´t think I have stolen anything from Mat Uelmen but it does sound quite diabloish.

hope you´ll like them.

Getting shot in the chest:
First of all, I think you should take the percussion down a little, and bring up the piano a little in the beginning, just so the balance is right, and so you can really hear what's going on in the piano. It reminds me of something from one of the Bourne movies in some ways, and I really like it. It kinda makes me think the guy pretended to get shot, but then got up and walked away at the end.

Walking Mist:
The silence at :20 seconds is too silent. There needs to be some echo or something to fill the awkward void. It reminded me very much of the music from Fable, the VG (which was partially scored by Danny Elfman). I love it!

double posting... again. The only way for this to be seen at all.

I had a little flare of inspiration a while ago and decided to convert an old worthless midi tune into MP3 and make in audible.
The result is a mix of chiptune and other stuff. It has a very strange third part wich is the best thing in the song IMO. Anyway I hope you'll enjoy it:

Since you've received so much praise and stuff; I thought I'd critique some of your MIDIs. I love your music nonetheless, but I thought I'd critique a bit.
And yup. I listened to all of your music posted here. xD

Oh and I plugged all the below MIDIs into Finale Allegro to look at. :p

Lovers Ghost:: It's rather boring. Pretty, but boring. I was looking at the music and it just doesn't really go anywhere. It kinda repeats and repeats and repeats.

Love Theme :: Ow. Too loud for my own opinion for a love theme. It's pretty but the piano sounded like it was just key-smacking and the drums were a bit overpowering.

The Secret Orden Choir :: The left-hand on the piano is way too loud for anything. And not to mention the chord sounds kinda ugly. You can hardly hear the right-hand piano 'cause of the above.

And this new piece 7 ? :: I liked it, but the last bit at the end seemed really random. O_o;~

sounds incidental, it fall good for the background of any game, the midi.
The mp3 I wanted to hear the strings you used in the midi lol, not the electronic sound u used, the strings sound better there I think but still good. You added melody to the mp3 =o and the last bit at the end didn't sound random to me.

Good critique is always welcome!
Have in mind that those songs are really old.
The midis are mostly a real mess especially the old ones (secret order).
I had no idea of what I was doing in all honesty =)
In love theme I wanted a sad sence of grandeur and I guess I had no other means of expressing that back then, also I did not consider the piano anything more than something to complete certain chords and to add a little tempo to the whole thing. The drums however I have no excuse for, I am just terrible with midi drums. Most of the music I made in the days were ment to loop and to be in games that my friend was constantly making.

The "random" part in 7 is really not that random if you listen closely its just the "melodies" that make the whole thing really strange.

I can see where you are coming from with all your critiques and I really appreciate them.

By the way did you really dig up my other thread and listen to that too?

I wish I could compose as good as you; where and how the heck did you learn to do all this? o_O

One_Winged
November 5th, 2007, 05:43 pm
Well, I got started when I got a Sibelius (notation program) course in school when I was about 16 I think. I got ahold of the software and started making very short and very bad midi tunes for my friend who was into creating games in The Games Factory at the time. I downloaded Final fantasy and other game midis and opened them in sibelius to see how they were built up and I learnt a thing or two I guess.

Thank you for the compliment by the way:)

I make the most of my music starting of with just sitting and playing around with my guitar by the way. It helps if you have some instrument to envision your ideas with.

Now I feel like composing something, do you have any ideas?

Since you're generally a free-style composer, why not try something that's much stricter in form? For example, you can do a sonatina on the piano with only 4 chords and 5 notes on the melody. See how much you can do with the restricted material.

Wouldn't that mean composing something to deliberately rend your own music? I mean, it's not like we ask people with open minds to think narrow-mindedly just as a personal change?

It's not narrow-mindedness; it's testing your creativity. Besides, what makes a piece of music 'open minded' and 'narrow-minded'? Music is just music, people appreciate different things, there are no such thing as 'narrow-minded music' or 'open-minded music'. Also, just because you have a limited amount of materials to use, it does not mean that it's always restricted to what it is. I strongly believe that One Winged definitely has the ability to change 5 notes and 4 chords into something unique, and interesting.

Noir7
November 8th, 2007, 01:22 am
Of course he could, but he could certainly do better if he deliberately didn't restrict himself.

Besides, you're missing a major point; One_Winged is Swedish.

Sir_Dotdotdot
November 8th, 2007, 01:49 am
It's not as restricted as you think it is.

Restricted material does not equal restricted creativity. I mean, even if you don't set some restrictions and rules on yourself, you are already restricted by the fact that western music has only 12 tones to work with. I'm merely suggesting shrinking the 12 tones down to 5 or 6. As for chords, it's even more versatile. No one said you must use only triads or seventh chords. You may go as far as 13th chords and take out which ever note you wish for everytime you use it. Furthermore, you can change the position of the chords, a C minor chord does not have to always be in C-Eb-G, it can be G-Eb-C or whatever. One must think outside of the box in terms of the word 'restriction'. Do not fear it; find your way around it. That is what a great composer strive to do.

Hey all of you, thansk for writing such a load of comments!
someone proposed that I could have another go at a love song, so I did.
However, it turned out to be more of a christmass song for some reason.

I had a great time reading your arguments for and against restrictions as a tool of practice and so forth. I have to admit that I don't know many rules and strict forms so it's hard for me to say: hey I am going to write a fugue in A minor! I simply don't know how.

So the new song...

Happy ending:
I don't know what to say... I incorpoated a chord progression wich have haunted the back of my head for a month or 5 =) It could use another part. It has violin, violoncello, double bass, glockenspiel and Vibraphone (my fave instrument) hmmm did I forget anything now?
Hope you'll like it, my brother kind of did.

PS: I am a dude, and thanks again for the comments.

Still its early for Christmas! Haha, here people were selling Christmas stuffs on October lol. But the piece didn't sounded so 'christmatic' for me. The piece was/is attractive in the way of how called my attention, I think it can get the attention of people fast but I would loved to not hear that repetition you did of the first sections, I was waiting you to bring new materials, that could make the piece more interesting and big. But nice to hear it, just wanted to hear new materials later of the first sections, it could bring sparks to the piece, just my opinions.

I guess you called it happy ending thinking of it as an end credits of any movie, video game, etc?

I have 2 new songs for you all. They are both on request so to speak from friends of mine who wanted some music for a game alliance =) corny I know...

Theme: this one is the lesser of the two, I actually don't know what I thought when I made this, it jumps from completely diferent sounds and stuff.
The only thing I like about it is the end part.

We stand firm: this one I finished an hour ago, and I am really happy with the main part of it. I had a lot of fun with odd chord progressions, dissonance, and I also tried my hands at writing a little choir part. If you only have time to listen to one of the songs this one is the more important.

The themes needed a military feel to them...

Theme:

Sounds pretty cinematic, but most of the instruments sound kind of generic and bad because of the 'machine gun-effect'.

We stand firm: Pretty much the same as the "Theme"-one, its sound is kind of generic. As friendly_titan, I'm not very into marches.. so I don't really know how to comment.

PFK
December 11th, 2007, 12:37 pm
I like We Stand Firm, it really reminds me of Locke's Theme from one of the Final Fantasy games (some parts sound pretty much the same but then the minor comes in). The minor sounds alright, but I don't really like the progression of the chords. It doesn't seem really well-thought out at some points and just sounds "uber"-weird. Perhaps you could do something more with the accompaninent (sp?) and the dynamics and go full-major near the end to give it the kind of "feeling-good"-feeling.

I listen to them last night and I liked the first one more than the second, just because the melody on the string seem interesting but then there I hear some changes in the music at least that is what I think of what I can remember of what I thought in that moment but I am not sure haha. Both has the same feel, and that is all I can say now. Later I will listen to them again.

Thanks for all the comments.

After listening to it for a while I kind of hear stuff that I want to change. I will try to play around with adding a fast crecendo at the end, so that it goes out with a bang =).

I have also noticed that some of the chords are a little obscured by some of the counterpoint elements going on, but I do like the overall chord progression.
PFK you of all people must know that I like the strange stuff =)

thanks again and feel free to make suggestions.

I just found the first one theme in my messy folder, I like it haha But I hope was longer! 0:39+ Those changes of melody arrived too early for me, it could do good if appear later in another section later of what you was doing. I said later 2 times! Anyway that is what I wanted to say.

Phew. Finally finished downloading all your compositions. ^__^; I will comment on em as soon as I am done listening to them. I must say though, I am really enjoying Lover's Ghost. It has such a pretty yet melancholy sound to it. I think I phrased that right. ^__^ Lovely work.

xD I will go to your old thread after I comment. I have a lot of songs to comment on after all. Not sure if I will comment on them all though. Sorry if my comments are lame. ^__^; But I am being honest.

Dreamscape - I really like this one. Though it sounds like it kind of ends to abruptly. Despite that, I like it. :)

Fred's Happy Theme - I don't know what it is about this song, but it makes me smile. It has a rather enjoyable theme to it.

Fred's Happy Theme (NES) - Aah. Reminds me of the good times. I wish I still had my Nintendo... Still as enjoyable as the first one.

Fred's Platform - I like this one the best, oddly. I really do not know why. :heh:

Struck Down - This one flows nicely. Wish it was longer though, a bit to short. I like this one better then the midi version. ^__^;

Aim Fire Kill - I really enjoyed listening to this one. I like the somewhat evil army marching feel it gives off. If that made any sense.. :heh:

I think that's all I am going to comment on right now. My internet time is limited right now! *flees*

I dont think your coments were the least bit lame, you actually made me realize that I have lost fred's platform:heh:

Thanks for all the coments and I look forward to hearing your views on the other stuff if you have time someday =)

Hey all, I havent been the most productive person lately due to the fact that I really busy with school and stuff like that. I thought I'd share what I have been able to sqeeze out.

To Little Nemo: This one is quite meditative, as the title states its dedicated to the main character of the NES-game Little Nemo. Its somewhat melancholy...

Boll-boll-bana: My dear friend is finally finishing one of his games, to comemorate this stupendous ocasion I decided to make some traditional "blip blop" for the game. Mind you that ´this and Boll-boll-boss were made in half an hour- an hour or so.

Boll-boll-boss: see the above...

Var är håret!: should be "var är håret?" which translates to "where's the hair!?" My friend just told me that he had shaved of his hair while I sat and fiddled with some strange ideas. Msn, is a lovely source of inspiration, dont you think? =)

Thats sadly it, what I have been able to do since christmass... my glory days are over :heh:

Feel free to coment.

Edit: thank you blueblades for the compliment! and sorry for the late(!) reply ;)

Hey I like that ! Gives a really nice atmosphere . It remind me of the Road to Perdition movie. Don't know why.

Even if it may sound a little repetitive, I think it would fit well as a background song in a movie.

Good job !

The bolls are nice to hear in a video game, those 2 can interact with the game and entertain better the player while playing. ;p

hehe yeah, they are quite minimalistic, they even follow the 4-sound-chanel rule of the Nes chip =)

Btw, they interlope quite nicely ;)

These are 2 very quick revisits on old songs.
This is the last Retro stuff I make in a while I think.

Enjoy!

Cool, I like both. The waltz one it can be nice to hear it in a combination of strings/flute/oboe or maybe piano/fute/oboe I think. Bionic Hero's song before the repeat of the first part(0:39) those last notes didn't connected very well for make the repeat smooth.

Wow, it have been more than one year. I hope you keep composing and improving!

I am just passing through your thread for just say that I really like the 8-bits waltz. I am listening to it right now, and is one of my favorite pieces done by you! I would like to see it orchestrated with a small instrumentation and expanded. I find the melody very relaxing and enjoyable. I seem to not get tired of it. -_^
