I would if I had the money... But I don't... And I was going to play on the old marketplace in my tow from next weekend on too, to get some money AND practise at the same time... Oh well... can't do that now, can I?
It's cheaper than you think to rent an instrument.

But I've been renting a flute before, and know exactly how much it would cost me, which I can't pay right now. I have no money at all right now. I even have to borrow money from my mother to send my flute to get it repaired (thank gosh, my teacher checked with the company if it was alright to send it there and get it repaired for free, since it I aven't even had it for a year, otherwise I would have to work my ass off and fail second year in upper secondary school)

I love Within Temptation! And I'm really mad at iTunes for not having Forsaken... *annoyed*
Hmm... what other music is good? I like Celtic music, Katamari Damacy music, all forms of Okami music... I love the retro music. It makes me want to see Okami as a GBColor or NES game or something.
I played flute in middle school and did the rent to own thing. I don't know how much it was, though, because my mom payed for it. XP

There is always "rent to own."
I do own one - that's not the problem. The problem is that it broke and I had to send it away for repair and wasn't able to borrow a flute from the school and renting for a few weeks would have cost me much more than it was worth.
Because I have this really, really big concert next week I was able to borrow a flute this week and the next, anyway. Now I just have to hope I get my flute before the concert, because the one I'm borrowing has an awful sound.
I'm playing on a party today too. I'm quite nervous, because I didn't know before yesterday and chose what to play half an hour ago and I will have top go in less than half an hour to the party.

I have a question for clarinetists out there. How can you play any of the higher notes (Like treble C or Bb) without making them sound squeaky and hideous? The only note I can play and make it sound natural is high G.
clarinetist
May 16th, 2008, 11:50 pm
Practice, or do the following:
1) Switch your reed so that the curve matches that of your mouthpiece (as a general rule, avoid, when putting the reed in, putting any "empty spaces" on the mouthpiece-reed opening); for example: Vandoren reeds are more aligned to Vandoren mouthpieces (or anything that has the same curve as the mouthpieces).
2) Switch your mouthpiece for the reason stated above.
3) Recheck your embouchure: say "e" [as in the letter "e"]. That is how much lip you need to use when playing; too much lip makes the response of the high notes sound squeaky.
4) Make sure there is enough air going through the clarinet. After forming your embouchure, you must place the mouthpiece tip against your upper teeth so that air gets through (with the top teeth on top of the mouthpiece).

Sort of, take for example, your D major chord, which is D, A, F#, the low D being the lowest note in the chord. D/F# would still have the same notes, except F# would now be your lowest note. I hope this makes sense?

If anyone uses a DampIt: how often do you use it? (I haven't bothered to use mine for my Clarinet for about 5-7 months now.) It's just that I'm a little worried as to how often I should be using it... I mean, the store that I bought the clarinet from put the DampIt in the clarinet 24/7. Every time I did use the DampIt after buying the clarinet, my clarinet would contract and be unable to take apart (probably an overload in moisture)...
Also, if one were to be playing a wooden instrument outside, is it bad to be playing it for Marching Band (starting in August, ending in February)? I do have a plastic clarinet, however one of the keys fell off (which I still have), and some cork pads are needed here and there... (does anyone know what the cost of the repair could be?).
Thanks to anyone who can help...

When I am learning a new piece for a concert or even for my own pleasure, I often use the finger warm-ups and etudes from classic composers like Chopin or Schmitt. These are great ways to train your ears. I would also recommend Rachmonikof, but that is only if you are experienced. That will make picking out popular melodies simpler for you, the student.

I have no idea what a DampIt is:heh:
I would definatly advise you to use your plastic clarinet for marching band. Rain, humidity, band camp in general... not good for wooden instruments. Marching Band deformed my plastic clarinet...multiple times actually so I really wouldn't risk it with your wooden one. Anyways, it shouldn't be that costly to fix the plastic clarinet. You might have to order something to fix the key though. Hope this helped!

Thank you. ^_^ A DampIt is basically a humidifier, containing moisture (usually used for wooden instruments), supposedly needed for dry weather but I haven't bothered to use it for a while. If it helps, the right-hand Eb key fell off.

Really, I don't know anyone that uses a DampIt. Then again I don't know many people that have a wooden instrument  For the Eb key though...I would guess you would need a screw of somesort. When I lost a screw they replaced it with one from a spare clarinet. I'm pretty sure it was less than 15$ but it was awhile ago. You should probably just go to the store where you would get it fixed and ask how much it would cost. Then you can get a superb answer of what needs to be fixed and such :heh:

The conductor has pierced the baton to the hand when performing(The conductor is Ashkenazy)
Instead, the concertmaster had to conduct in haste(The concertmaster conducted all the movements of this symphony)
The concertmaster is Masafumi Hori.
This is a very serious thing,
and the concertmaster should think about things of all musical instruments,
and cannot do such correspondence if all things are not in the head.

Does anyone know from where is this tune? I have heard it in the serie of Rurouni Kenshin(Samurai X). And is not an original work by the composer of that serie. I heard it once in the radio but I really don't remember the title(was years ago). I just remember it was from an Anonymous composer that submit it for a contest in Italy(I might be wrong). And now I heard it on tv in an architecture stuff. And decided to transcribe the only I could remember for see if anyone know which work is this?

ick i have an exam at the end of term and im so stuck what to do for it. they want something original, experimental and 'outside the box' if you want an A or B... if i just played any old piano piece the highest i can get is a C
so what the hell should i do? suggestions anyone?
only thoughts ive had is firstly there are two pieces i know of- the first is a merge of singing in the rain and ravels jeux d'eau and the second is a merge of ravels gaspard de la nuit in the space of 4-5 mins. so was thinking maybe i could merge a suite together like that like debussys images or something
second idea is out of pure cheek use cage's 4'33''

there is a piece of experimental music we were told about yesterday that has one direction. the direction is something along the lines of this: 'fully grown adult male crawls inside the vagina of fully grown adult female whale'
its not experimental music though, its experimental art. but then i guess if you stick 'experimental' in front of anything it can qualify it *shrugs*

Alright, I'm learning a Liszt piece, and a couple measures has me second guessing how to read sheet music (well more of, the rules that go along with accidentals) x.x The piece is Liebestraume No. 3. Anywho, so I was wondering if someone could tell me if these things are true or false.
1) Accidentals outside the key signature do not carry from measure to measure. (As in, a written in B flat in measure one, would be just a regular B in the next measure, unless it too has a flat accidental attached.)
2) Within a measure, accidentals apply to all octaves. (As in, if middle C has a sharp, and later on in the measure there is a C written an octave above it, it too is now a C sharp and does not need the accidental written next to it)
3) Accidentals in the Treble Clef do not apply to the Bass Clef.
Anyways, the measure that has me all second guessing is 41. It just sounds so... wrong. But, if I am reading it right, then perhaps it'll sound right as soon as I work it up to speed.

This is when common sense and the sense of security with the publisher comes in. If you know basic theory, and the nature of this piece (liszt), then you would know that the main chord for this measure is A minor, correct? I don't know the key sig. in this section, but I think this is when it modulates into C major, right? Everything is natural in this measure, other that the instance of the D-Sharp and the F-Sharp.
Does this help?

I'm goinna play in an orchestra (I'm only playing the oboe part with a C-flute on two Christmas carols though) for the first time ever in a week and I have a small problem and like to know f you have any advise...
I have 7 measures of pauses twice in one piece, but I have a really short concentration span, so I'm pretty sure I'll mess up where I am during these pauses. You know any good tricks not to loose track in counting? Also, I won't play with the orchestra until the actual performance, so I don't even know how it will sound during those pauses, so I can't just memorize how it should sound right before I'll play again.

Watch the conductor. If he is doing what he is supposed to, he will be keeping the beat for you, and he may even signal you in.
Otherwise, all else I can say is just count, and practice counting. Have, say, a screamo song playing in the background, and when you get to your part, turn it up, and practice counting with noise in the background.

True

False, they only apply to the octave to which they are applied.
3) Accidentals in the Treble Clef do not apply to the Bass Clef.
I would take it as an accidental on a middle C for example, would apply in both clefs, as long as it is the same note/octave.
Yeah. I sure hope that's right, else im not passing my theory -.-

It'l hold on you, and you should never force to keep it held on you. Music is something that you discover in yourself, because it was originally part of you (whither you knew it or not); you cannot create something inside of you or force it out.
It's like trying to make a house without trees to shape the wood and the steels to mend them together with nails. If it isn't there, it probably wasn't meant to be there, or as significant as you might have thought.

+ i had a really interesting lecture today on the political side of music which i thought id share for discussion here. its a topic that deserves its own thread tbh but couldnt think of how to word a title and such.
i have two quotes for you on this topic:
"music in itself is no more political than mathematics. just as mathematics can be used to representative ends, so can music. but this has nothing to do with the structure of mathematics or music" (Ligeti)
"music is utopian. music which presents the familiar and comfortable thus presents the already achieved as the utopian- i.e. the best of all possible worlds has been achieved. the Culture Industry is therefore ideologically in the service of capitalism" (Adorno)
what do people think? i had a whole lecture on this so i reserve my views until other opinions have been given, and also because if no one finds this as interesting as i do and theres not much discussion on it it saves me a lot of typing =P
but if anyone is interested please discuss =]

OMG, I just saw Allen Vizzutti live! He was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! He did things that should not be possible on a trumpet. The compositions he made for my former middle school band are a different story. The middle school band had a good blend but bad balance, so it was too mushy to judge it, but his solo-ing and cadenza-ing were great!

Double-post.. but it's an old one!
Just wanted to inform everybody that tonight was my school's Spring Awards Concert. I received (for the third year in a row, now accepting as a Junior) the Outstanding Musicianship Award for Varsity Band [Junior]. I also received for the second-time in a row, the highest honored award which partner's the Sousa award, the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. There has been only one other person at my school to get it three times and I have one more year left of school-- hopefully I can get it three times in a row too!

We should be lucky to even have music in our schools. It's not like we're high-class stuff, but there's a lot of passion and work put into making the most of our department, even if it isn't some High School of the Arts or whatever.

Hardcore mix with "Mr Brown" and "Paradise and Dreams"
I am pretty sure I once heard a mix on the DI Hardcore channel where "The Angry Kids vs Bob Marley - Mr Brown (JAKAZiD remix)" was blend/mixed into "Ultrabeat - Paradise and Dreams".
Feeding the titles of both into one google query results in surprisingly few results, so I would not be surprised if the above-mentioned transition between the two tracks was done in a streamed liveset or a set without a known tracklist.
Perhaps some of the DJs home to DI Hardcore would know - they probably played it
I wonder if this can be figured out at all.

Rough sketch of score (http://www.flickr.com/photos/alphonsenguyen/4151426001/)
The key and time signature are probably wrong, and I've probably messed up the melody as well. But what can you expect after all these years? Anyways, it's probably more romantic than classical, and written for a small orchestra or large chamber ensemble. Also, something tells me that it was written by Schubert, Brahms, or Schumann, but so far I haven't found a match when I look at their symphonies.

So I have a paper to write up on an artist, and I chose Sufjan Stevens. I'm doing an analysis of his body of work, and I have to analyze two specific songs. One really caught my attention off the bat, 'Concerning the UFO Sightings near Highland, IL'. After doing some research on that song, and him a bit, I've gathered that the song is in, get this, 18+17+17+13/16 (65/16) time? I've never heard or seen anything that crazy before.
So I was wondering if someone could confirm, or not, that statement, and if it isn't true then help me figure out what time signature it really is. Here is a link to the music video of the song on Youtube, it's only 2 minutes long so bare with me please. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4b0fdETmRng) Here (http://www.last.fm/user/MisterEnt/journal/2006/11/16/2323_music_geeks-_help!_:_of_sufjan_stevens_and_impossible_time_sig natures) is the link to the page that makes that crazy time signature claim, it explains how it is counted a bit more... But it still confuses me, and I'm doubtful of the claims at the same time. I trust Ichigos to help me get an A on this report!

Success! I wrote a letter to my local classical music radio station, asking for help. Luckily there was a conductor hanging around that day who happened to know it. So they contacted me almost immediately and identified it as Brahms' Serenade No. 2, final movement.

Not to shut you down, but what campus are you heading towards?
Hopefully you're going to the Ann Arbor campus and not the Flint or Dearborn campus. If you're going to Flint's campus, they just changed performance directors (serious practice suddenly became very happy), and Dr. Lois Alexander, the director of their music deparment, iirc, is going on a prolonged sabbatical in Russia within the next two years. And the Dearborn's music program is simply pitiful. I have to say that they do try, but the student base is very much under league.
But if you are going to the Ann Arbor campus, you'll be in for a treat.

EDIT -- And yes, this is my top choice. I know a professor on the piano faculty, Arthur Greene, from my trips in Europe and I also know the head of the violin faculty (Stephen Shipps). Both really enjoyed my playing, and my teacher (Stephen Swedish) played with Stephen Shipps in his most recent piano trio. I've wanted to study with Arthur Greene, and vice-versa, and with his pull, I'll definitely be going (95% sure).

Audacity? I think it's free.
And, er... ya still have to do it with hand with a program, ya know ;)
Ya could probably just read off the top melody on the piano, and that'd be transposed somewhat well.
Anyways, try Audacity and see what it's like.

Audacity?
Audacity is an audio editing/recording program, for file formats such as mp3, ogg, wave, flac, and so forth.
The only conversions Audacity is capable of performing are from one audio file format to another. It can also edit audio (key changes, tempo changes, filters, leveling, artifact removal, etc) by altering the shape of the digital sample wave, but it can't actually turn a piano part into an alto sax part. =)
If the poster is referring to a midi file, or other type of data file that can be rendered as sound by a synthesizer, then the conversion can be done within a midi-editing program, or as PGT3 pointed out, within a program that automatically transposes for you. =)

September 10th, 2010, 01:16 am
What I meant, Porsche, was that ya still have to find out which notes to play (cause that piano music shouldn't be just one melody line, right?) That's probably his main problem, or else couldn't ya just read off the music and play it, transposed (by just 'thinking' that all of the notes are this interval up)?
I'm probably wrong but this guy hasn't been here to clarify so... :VVVVVVVVVV

Hi I'm relatively new here, please let me prefess this post by saying I'm not trying to be pretentious I'm looking for genuine input.
Earlier this year I started learning piano (well keyboard) and I have a great interest in maths and love to combine the two. I know the basic music maths like the frequancy of each note in a octave being the 12th root of 2 taken to the power of the nth note above the key note (counting the key as 0) times the frequency of the key note. Alos have learnt the dominant and subdominant progressions like in the circle of fiths ect.
I would really really appreciate and ideas and exaples of mathimatical contructs manifest musically :D

Anyone here ever tried making their own musical instrument? I'm gonna try going for it when I get my next paycheck and can afford some tools/supplies...
Edit: People who can play by ear: did you learn to play by ear just by playing your instrument a lot, or are there training exercises you can do to help your ear? I can't pick out any chords or intervals at all, and I even have a hard time picking out melodies sometimes (though I think my piano is slightly out of tune, so that isn't helping...)

I start by trial and error in order to figure out what key it's in, or at least the chord progression. From there it's easier to figure out by using a bit of theory. I'm quite the beginner at it though. I don't know the theory involved with harmony, so when it comes to that I just curl up in a ball and cry (or go back to trial and error and go note by note through the scale).
Also, I started my government class today and there is a german foreign exchange student in it. My teacher goes "So, have you forgiven us? 'Cause you know, we kicked your ass TWICE! YEAH! USA! (he made the letters with his arms like in YMCA, except USA in this case)." It was really funny.

@Mazeppa: Ya plaen gaem music rocks.
Something about being able to fly in absolute abandonment and freedom, yet at the same time, being forcefully constrained by having to fight for what you believe in, all the while knowing that Death can take you away at any moment whether you're ready for it or not. Something about that stirs a man's heart in just the right way.
Here's the mellow version of the same melody.

I was talking with a Japanese friend that plays in an orchestra in Japan, and she made a weird comment that most male performer and composers dedicated to the classic music there are quite gays... I was like "wtf?" Does anyone here have an idea if the majority of classic music performer/composers would be gay over Japan? Is it there any real statistic that has been done in the past about classic music performer/composers sexuality over Japan?

Yes, it's statistically proven that classical musicans are gay for Japan.

Don't quite know if he meant that.
However, I am gay *for* Japan. Always have been. And I'm no otaku or anything of the sort. In fact, I'd love to teach music in Japan someday, and write catchy jazz tunes on the side.

The music to the credits from Episode 0 of Nichijou. The anime sure is different (and I love it) but this 0th (?) episode had a great refreshing soundtrack of that traditional classical sound. Also the ending music for this episode is something of an odd combination. I think its brilliant though. :)

I find it funny that they consider Austria to be "so far North," especially since living there is basically like living in Northen Minnesota (which is a smidge more north than where I live, but it's not even 'as bad' as living in Canada...)
Interesting article, but I'm sure the composer wasn't just cramped up inside all the time to have such a lack of Vitamin D (at least, from the source in which get from the sun) to severely attribute to his death.
Anyway, I'm not a doctor, so >_>

So I may not be able to do a Masters degree for a while thanks to funding.
The place I am applying to is ridiculous- a 2 year programme at £10,000 per year and that's not including living costs. However, all international students get funded by charity, two international students (one undergrad, one postgrad) get everything paid including maintenance by the institution itself, and they have large bursaries available to Eastern European students...
I am seriously considering leaving England for my masters- I have a friend in the Netherlands who tells me I could travel, study and live over there for the cost of a 2 year masters over here- the course fees are less than 2,000 euros. Problem is I don't speak the language. Any English speaking country I could go to is probably no cheaper than just staying here.
It's terrible- I might be stuck just because I didn't choose to be interested in maths or something this country considers 'useful' and will help with funding towards. I hate England!

Welcome to the world of living artists.
But depending on what you plan to do, getting a Master's degree is only one path to making a living.
Thorn
September 8th, 2011, 10:49 am
I know. I have been having a think this week and debating whether or not it's really what I want to do anyway.
If I wanted to do another degree in a more "useful" subject, then there are quite a lot of funding options available.
The main reason for Master's degree is because I want to be able to develop my compositional skills in a more flexible setting- the course I want to do centres around putting on a public concert of your own music (it is a conservatoire so works get performed by their performance students/ensembles) and a commentary of your work over the two years. It is the only UK course of its kind and it will basically allow me to develop under guidance without feeling like I'm just getting through an exam. I have found loads of composition internships/resident composer positions but they require a postgrad degree.
If I had the option, I would wait until I could fund it and do the course- I definitely feel it's something I want to do. Problem is I'm now sitting around all day sponging off the government which I hate it's the most degrading thing I've ever done!
If I'm honest, I want to do a masters in the long run but not right now it's just that I don't have anything else to do. Doing another degree would probably make me feel like a course hopper and the only other thing I can do is Japanese- with that I'd be more interested in the JET scheme than a course. Thing is I don't feel ready to just vanish to Japan alone for a year- I'm not in the mental state for it yet I need to grow up a bit before doing that. Also if you have JLPT N2 you can get involved with translation work over there rather than just being an english classroom assistant. I'm doing JLPT N3 in December so again it's going to be a while- hopefully by the time I get N2 I will feel better mentally prepared to do something like that.
I'm more inclined to call it the world after education than the world of living artists- I'm an academic, spent my whole life in education getting A's, got a first class degree but never worked in my life and now the education system has pushed me out and I have no work experience other than private piano tuition which I still do and it gives me pocket money but it's not exactly an income.
I don't know what to do with myself!

I don't know what I think of this... half of me is screaming YOU CAN'T PLAY RAVEL ON SYNTH!!! but the other half is thinking it was a pretty clever idea. But is "cleverness" really more important than the music itself? You'd be hard pushed to contend with a normal orchestra using synths, but an orchestra in the hands of Ravel? Impossible...

I usually use Rico brand reeds for my Alto Sax. A friend gave me a whole box of unopened Vandouren (Did I spell that right?) brand reeds, and they take forever to break in. Does anybody got some tips for me? :/
Taemond
January 9th, 2012, 09:33 am
Just do some research on Vandouren. From my experience, Rico are your standard, cost-effective reed. Vandouren may be just a higher quality brand and thus use a different type of wood (I've never heard of Vandouren so these are all just suggestions). Also make sure they aren't Jazz specific reeds. Some brands make reeds that specifically cater for Jazz and tend to be much harder and take longer to break in. While it may that the reed might only be a 3, if its one designed for Jazz or cabaret, it'll be closer to what you'll know as a 4.
That's just the trend over here, so I'm not sure if that applies elsewhere. Of course the other thing that the reeds might just be too old. Just leave them soaking in luke-warm water for 10-15 minutes before you play and see if that helps.
Bey-Heart
January 9th, 2012, 07:38 pm
The reeds are brand new. I played today using a Vandouren again. It worked a lot better. And I think they might be Jazz specific like you said. So I don't think it's a matter of breaking them in, but a matter of getting used to? Either way, it worked pretty well today
