1) Zero's desktop seems very much XP to me, with a calendar applet installed
2) Vista isn't even out yet
3) Vista will most likely suck anyway (18 GB for an OS is just retarded)
4) It won't get decent before they release at least one service pack for it, so for now you're better off with XP

HD and high resolution aren't the same thing. Just using a high resolution doesn't mean you're using HD-TV resolution.

Can i just ask...how do you do the PrintScreen thingy on a Mac?! Cause I really can't find the button.....XD
Luis
November 24th, 2006, 09:40 am
Screen Capture
One way to take screen shots is to invoke Mac OS X's built-in screen capture capability by pressing the following keyboard shortcuts:
* Command-Shift-3: Immediately takes a picture of the entire screen.
* Command-Shift-4: Changes the cursor into crosshairs. Drag the crosshairs over a section of the screen, then release the mouse button to capture the shaded area.
By default, screen shots captured in this fashion are saved as PNG image files on the Finder's desktop, sequentially named Picture 1, Picture 2, etc. To copy the image to the Clipboard instead, hold down the Control key when you press the appropriate keyboard shortcut.
Those are the basic methods of capturing screen shots, but you can get a little fancy when necessary. Suppose you want to take a picture of just one window, only the menu bar, a particular menu, or some other distinct screen element? After all, extraneous items in the background will distract your audience's attention if you're trying to focus on only one particular thing. You could use Command-Shift-3 to snap the entire screen and then manually edit the resulting image file, or you could use Command-Shift-4 and try to meticulously select only the portion of the screen you want. Better yet is to press Command-Shift-4, then press the spacebar. This changes the cursor from crosshairs to a camera. As you move the camera cursor over screen objects, they are highlighted. When the item you want is highlighted, click it and the captured image will contain that precise item with no unsightly extra pixels around the edges.
Are you ready for the trick I promised to show you? OK, here goes. When your victim leaves his or her Mac unattended, press Command-Shift-3 to take a picture of the entire screen in its current state (ideally there will be a bunch of windows open with buttons displayed). Open Desktop & Screen Saver preferences, and make the Picture 1 screen shot the new desktop file. Deselect the "Change picture" check box so that it never picks another image, then close Desktop & Screen Saver preferences. Sneak away and wait for the sounds of befuddlement when your victim starts wondering aloud why the onscreen windows can't be closed, buttons don't react when clicked, and icons can't be dragged. Of course none of these screen elements function properly because they exist only as part of the image file decorating the desktop. After you've had your fun, revert Desktop & Screen Saver preferences to their previous settings.

Not a real DS. More like a read, read, read, get three choices, and then read your choice ending. A single click of human interaction over 12 hours of gameplay. It was my mistake calling it a dating sim. It is a Visual novel. And they do cost money. Round about 40 USD without import shipping (usually doubles the price).
And I'm going to repeat that this should not be your first Visual Novel. Go with something more mainstream like Planetarian, Shuffle!, Tsukihime, Kanon, or Fate/Stay Night | Fate/Hollow Ataraxia. Note: most listed---more accurately all---are Japanese region games, you'll have to go through a long process to get it running smoothly by modifying your computer settings. Even then you have to find either a translation patch or an inline translator if you cannot read Japanese script.
It you're still interested in playing the game (which you shouldn't be), it's made by nitroplus, and can be found at Jlist, last I checked,

You can only go so far with emulation (as in file extension issues/problems), and sometimes I don't wanna go through the hassle to WINE a program onto my Linux Box. So I just boot up the laptop and call it good.
You said it best a month back: Windows may not be the best, but it is convenient.

I bet you've never even used Vista? Stop talking rubbish about it just to sound cool. The only people who talk rubbish about Windows are people who know shit about computers, but heard that Windows is bad a few years ago and thus repeat the statement because they think bashing MS makes them look cool. Windows WAS shit, up till ME. 2000 and XP are pretty solid products, and so is Vista. I was sceptical about Vista, then I worked with it and I was forced to swallow my words. It's a pretty damn solid piece of work. So stop moaning about Windows being bad, try upgrading from your petty ME machine first.

this endless lament about windows seems annoying to me, too.. i use windows and it kinda works well, no security oder system problems. i'm satisfied with that!
M
February 10th, 2007, 01:38 pm
Realistically, it wasn't windows that was bad, but IE 6.x, it's inter/intra-net security, and rights management. If those three are fixed, you'll have a pretty darn good OS with impressive ease of use.
IE 6 is fixed with an outside program, or just install IE 7; networking is fixed by a firewall, spyware, and virus scanners; And file permissions... It exists on XP, but the average user can't set it up. I think Vista corrected this, but I've only used Vista long enough to understand how things are placed (my job only has one in office, and it's currently getting configuration scripts being written for it).
As for macs... Last mac I touched was the Apple ][. My jobs going to teach me more about them soon.
Then why do I use Linux primarily? It's practically build for Computer Science students right out of the box for reasons too long to list. Not to mention windows users have forgotten the power of "running" applications (I know the console still exists in windows, but it sucks) out of a console window. Also, no one knows linux, therefore when someone tries to do something on your computer and all they get is a terminal to work around, they just walk away. Viruses are almost nonexistent, spanning 40 or so et exista. Even if a virus got on the system, it can't effect anything because all OS files are under lock and key.
Luis
February 10th, 2007, 02:41 pm
I like the *nix/Win/Mac OS debate :)
I think X was saying vista was a bitch because of ripping off OSX O_o...thats how I read it.
Windows: not as bad as people say, I got like 2 BSODs in my life, sometimes stuff didnt work, but then again I never bothered to find out why back then so those were probably user errors..
Gaming is fun and supported, always a plus. Win isnt half bad, in fact win was perfect for me, the only reason I switched to OSX was out of curiosity...
OSX: been nice, if it could game I would probably replace windows with it for a couple of years (note I haven't used vista so I'm comparing it to XP) just for the heck of it.
*nix: actually had Ubuntu running for about a week and half , booted into it a couple times, mainly for email work and stuff, just to check it out, it was nice, I didn't really get the whole terminal/apt get thing but that was probably because I didn't try.
All in all, anyone who uses computer for email, IM, and music would NOT notice the difference between the OSes...they are all as easy to use once properly configured. Just goes back to taste and specific programs/things you want to do with your computer.

Actually Vista runs more smoothly than XP does, but, never having properly used it, I'm sure you wouldn't know.
Games are slower on Vista, I won't deny that, but the desktop is definitely faster.

Oh, it is smooth, I'm not questioning that, but the suggested amount of memory for Vista is higher then those of say os x or xp. So it does get jittery if you try to use it on just a regular old pc that was meant for xp.

Actualy I think this depens greatly on how you want vista to look like, all the pretty effects and stuff WILL have an effect on your experience, GPU/proc will run hotter, there will be less ram available, intensive tasks will get you throttling quicker.
Haters call Vista XPv2, XP was pretty good, so I would take that as a compliment. :D

No, it's Seras Victoria from Hellsing. =p
@RD: Vista uses about 400 - 450 MB of memory, XP uses about 250 - 300 (all based on clean installs of course). Windows 98 didn't even come near that, so I don't see your problem.
PC's with 512 MB of ram are standard, PC's with 1 GB of memory are becoming more common by the day. In the time of XP 128 MB was normal, on which XP would barely run. Now 512 is normal, which will run Vista better than XP ran on 128 MB. So I really don't see your problem. Stop bashing Vista for going along with the time and growing with the systems of today. XP also didn't run on the average designed-for-Win98 PC. You're just looking for reasons to bash Vista just because it's MS, and that's just sad.
And you mention OSX, but I don't see your point in doing that. OSX is not a PC OS, so it's not an option unless you want to spend too much money buying new hardware. Hell, OSX isn't even a real Apple product, it's just a version of BSD Unix with a GUI. Also, OSX only works on a very small amount of hardware-setups. Windows has to be much more versatile. Of course it can't be optimized as much.
Seriously, bashing Windows to be cool is so nineties.
Edit: Oh yeah, and mac users are generally stupid idiots who know shit about computers. They think they're so great because they have Mac, and they hide behind their imaginary wall of safety. When the day comes a heavy virus will hit their systems they'll be crying and running around crazily not knowing what to do, because they thought they'd be safe. And then I'll just point and laugh.
MacOS is just heavily overrated.

Where did that come from? It's generally considered uncool to bash FF, so no none would bash FF just to be cool. I bash FF because I think Squaresoft has completely raped the series, especially after 7 (9 was an exception).
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy FF7, but the OMG-SEPHIROTH-IS-COOL people are just fucking annoying. FF8 is rubbish, FF9 rocks cos it's oldskool, everything after that sucks again (although the sphere grid in FFX was kinda cool).
But, we're way off-topic here. Post your damn desktop :P
By the way, that comic isn't even funny. To turn against it even, when you buy OSX you pay for all of it, even functionality you will never use. With Vista, you pay for what you use. If you never use a network domain, why spend money on a version with support for that? Just get one of the home editions. Don't need Aeroglass or Media Center? Just get Home Basic. Mac OS doesn't give you a choise. Besides, you can't buy Mac OS seperately, only upgrades for your excisting Mac OS which came with your system.

which is Gnome. It's default for Ubuntu, but I use it anyways. One of the nice things about (K)ubuntu is that you have the choice to run what ever desktop environment you want. The actual Windows OS looks more like DOS, with a command line (even with Vista). I forget which one, but there's a file you can delete to use just it, without the GUI.

Also, with ANY major linux distro you can run any type of Desktop environment, not just the Ubuntu distro. Be it Gnome, K, Xfce, Al, WinMan; heck there are even alternates to BASH!

Greetings Linux fanboy. Firefox crashing on Windows is a Firefox issue, or there is something wrong with your school computers. So don't bash Windows for it, or I'll become nasty. Seriously, bashing Windows is not funny anymore. It's been done. So stfu about it and think up something original.

Actually, a lot of desktop Linux distros are more user friendly than they used to be. My box is a Compaq Presario SR1620NX w/ 512 Meg RAM, 160 Gig of storage. I dual boot Win/ Linux because of compatability (i.e. Wine won't run everything) and have lin kerneral 2.6. The OS is Ubuntu w/ KDE, GNOME, and Xcfe. I was thinking of triple boot w/ external HD. If so, I'd try Bee or Solaris.
I'm learning C++ and thinking of writing a linux distro based on Nintendo's GUI for their DS.

Real Linux users use VMs when it comes to running multiple OSs. Far more handy that having to reboot every time you wanna get into your other OS.

But this guy is obviously not a real Linux user, but a Linux n00bie. The fact that he's using Ubuntu should tell you that. And then he wants to write his own distro. Just make your own Gnome skin, lol.

As Angelic said, Ubuntu is a noob distro (even I used it for a while, that should be proof enough) yes I know linux has gotten alot more user friendly lately, get some experience under your belt before writing anything.

In defense, I don't use VMs because I find that an OS usually runs smoother when you boot from it. And I use Ubuntu because I share a computer with 4 other people, 5 of which don't know what a command line is.

That makes me laugh, honestly. If that's your attitude don't do anything with computers, an administrator/program creator shouldn't let himself be held back by the end user. If you really knew Linux you'd either set up another Linux distro next to your Ubuntu one or you'd set up a more advanced distro. Seriously, once set up Suse is as easy to use as Ubuntu. If you can't set it up, then you have nothing to look for in the Linux development world.
And on another note: we're getting heavily off-topic here.
