@angelc: You have a point, but apps generaly have a larger selection of themes avalible (although I haven't looked very hard for themes that support luna). For example, I like the look of Mac OS X, and since I can't find a good luna theme, I just used Winblinds. What site do you for Luna?

None, I don't really need skins. before I used this scheme I just used the Windows 2000 skin. And if you like OSX so much, get a mac.

OSX freezes on the eMacs at school all the time. I know this is just the eMac, but I'd rather not take chances. I was actually thinking of switching to some Linux distro, since almost all are free to update to the next version. (i.e. Vista= $200 for home basic. Not quite in our family's budget) I heard ubuntu was about to update. Maybe I'll try that.

With mac it's not a supply/demand thing. They just are too bloody expensive for what you get. Alienware on the other hand gives you a highly tweaked gaming machine for your money, that's something different.

March 13th, 2007, 09:39 pm
Alienware computers have been thoroughly testen, their hardware has been adjusted for optimal performance etc. Often you can buy pre-overclocked systems from them, too.
And don't use wtf in every question you ask because it makes you look aggressive and on top of that it makes you look really stupid.

True, but Alienware is even more expensive than some cars. How's the customer service on them?

Sorry Angelic you sound like an Alienware add.
On the being more expensive than some cars: take a look at most highend models and they will be...things with 1000 dollar processors...extreme clocked/massive ammounts of ram...videocards..watercooling etc. that all adds up.
Warranty: never hurts always helps
3TB: I wonder how much you could cram into a stacker 830...in 750 GB drives... O_o
Toshihiko
March 17th, 2007, 05:45 am
Well luis everyone compares it like that, but a top of a line computer compared to something like a Mugen 4 door sedan is different. Saying that a high cost computer is the same as a cheap car is not a good comparison =P

As long as Linux needs a command line for simple stuff like installing a program, it's not very mature yet ~_~
isantop
March 27th, 2007, 01:03 am
Most programs don't require a command line. For debian based distros, Like Ubuntu and the like, .deb files contain an "installer" for the program. (not sure yet on specifics) RPM's are another big installer.
Just about anything else can be found with a package manager like Synaptic or Aptitude. (While these just use the command line, the user doesn't actually see the command line.)
The only time you ever see the command line while installing programs is when you install using uncompiled source code from a TAR archive. The user basically does what the .exe does. (Most .exe files that install programs are just self-extracting archives with source code in them.)
And a BASH is when the system encounters an error. (i.e. the command isn't recognized, or the file doesn't exist).
(for example:
ian@floaton:~$ Install [flie]
bash: Install: command not found
or
ian@floaton:~$ cd /home/ian/.wine
bash: cd: directory doesn't exist
Help me If I'm wrong, please.
EDIT: This is getting sort of off topic again.
(by the way, I use:
ian@floaton:~$ sudo apt-get [file]
(And I'm new to Linux, not incompetent.)
Neko Koneko

The installers that come with RPM's never work. Dunno about Debian. I might my desktops from work later today. Not that there's anything on them XD
M
April 2nd, 2007, 01:23 pm
Erm... BASH ([B]ourne [A]gain [SH]ell) is not the error, but the actual console that you used to attempt to explain what BASH was. BASH is basically the command prompt, and the entire program driver of Linux. Anything and everything starts from there.
Executables, or Package Systems, do not install from source code. What they do is they have what's called a "pre-compiled binary" and a shell script. It just copies that binary to a location and then runs a script so that your computer knows where it's been installed to. It's very similar to the "install path" and "add shortcut to desktop" when installing something in windows.
apt-get is a cleaner than the red-hat packaging, but it still uses a similar technology. The reason the actual packaging system sucks is from taking that "pre-compiled binary", and then looking for something else that was specified in the compilation. Say that the person that made the program had extra features built in that were not necessary for the program to run. He uses the extra feature, therefore has the extra feature installed. He then builds the RPM package from that computer. That program, though now able to be installed on other systems, is now dependent on that extra feature, because it was in use and enabled at the time of Package creation.
For instance, the binary was compiled with support for Perl, and you don't have Perl, it'll give you an dependency error. That binary is dependent on you having perl installed. With an RPM, DEB, or other packages, you don't have much a choice. You have to install Perl for the program to launch. But if you compiled the binary yourself, the dependency pro'lly won't be there (note the probably; you'll never fully get rid of dependencies in Linux); meaning you won't have to install Perl.
Basically, it's like saying I need Y program installed because I need it to run, even though I could run fine without it.
And I'm learning that after figuring out how to use Gentoo's system, that compiling from source isn't too bad. In fact, it's quite easy, and the system gives me only what I want. No longer do I have the 100 useless programs, countless similar web-applications, 9 text editors, and X office suites. It only installs what I want, when I want it. Hell, it doesn't even install a Desktop Environment off the get-go.
You're in my realm now

Check the system tray, too. Sometimes apps you don't need open and pile up here, too. You can also fine-tune your account to be less CPU hogging. Simple things like "don't display window contents while dragging" can free up some space.

Could be related to some files for active desktop being damaged or unregistered. Try Start > run > cmd, then run "sfc /scannow" without the quotation marks. This will scan for corrupted system files and try to fix them. Also, download and run http://www.pcstress.net/cleanup.exe - fixes a lot of problems. We use it all the time at MS :D

Microsoft failed in many ways. It's just a blown up company which surfived on it's monopoly for so many years.

Erm, Mac was a piece of crap too before Apple started basing MacOS on Unix. Basically, Apple shouldn't get much of the credit, they are just as horrible as MS. They just have a fancy looking version of BSD now, but it's not because of Apple's skills that MacOSX is so stable and secure. In fact, the apple software itself has had quite its share of security bugs too. So don't complain about MS while Apple isn't any better. If Apple were the number one there'd be as many viruses for MacOS as there are for Windows now. But since, compared to Windows, not many people use OSX, it's not a very interesting platform to write malware for.
And when it comes to speed, Macs are just normal PC's nowadays, and for the money I buy an iMac I can easily get a cheaper PC with much better specs.

Hmm..
I think yer wrong, a couple of years ago and there might have been some claim to that, since apple was still on the PCC processors, but lately I think theres very lil hta separates a PC from a mac, I mean the MBPs are running santarosa, and the macpros are running (dont really know this name so..shoot me) X5000 chipset.
AFAIK the hardware is comparale to nearly everything on the PC side, the only model "missing" within the mac lineup is a toned down mac pro without error checking ram (this ram...cost a darn crapload).
I agreee with angelic to some extent, true I've heard Macs with OS9 were a nightmare to run, but the same could be said bout win 95 I think. Apple does indeed have a BSD underlayer which its based around. However its due to that BSD underlayer that I doubt there would be as many viruses for OSX as windows if these shared the market equal (or OSX took over). By viruses I mean self propagating virii...not the prompting your pasword and getting it cause your a damn moron kind.
I havent actualy read this article (just looked over it) but it seemed intresting:

This should really be in the OS forum.
Invain, I hope you realise you are comparing differnt OS's, then saying that the computers running them have a speed difference. How very ignorant of you. You can't compare OS's on how different computers run them - and to be honest, your sentence didnt even make sense.
If you were comparing the Apple computers to Windows computers (not the OS's) I would still call you ignoratn - as there are no Windows computers. Windows is an OS, not a physical, tangible computer.
Luis
July 2nd, 2007, 12:55 pm
actualy jaso, until last year the only way to compare OSX (x being a variable) and its windows equivalent was indeed with diferent computers (as the procesor architectures were VERY different, ppc (motorola if im not mistaken) and x86 (Intel and AMD) afaik each architechture also had its strong points, and the main reason for the apple switch was probably increase in market share and motorolas not being able to provide what they promised (thermal efficiency for laptops and a certain clockspeed on the G5s if im not mistaken)
another intresting point on both companies is that Microsoft was as far as I know, the first SOFTWARE company, something true until they expanded with the Xbox and now the zune (if im not mistaken) while apple has always been software/hardware.

(And the linux guy pwns the windows and mac enthusiasts)
The problem with most mac and Linux users is that they are conceited bitches who think they are special while they're not.

Hear, hear. Mostly with mac users though. Not so much with Linux from what I've seen. It's probably because most people who use Linux actually know what they're doing.

It's fun at MS, we sometimes get calls from people with office on their mac.
MS: "Please boot your mac into safe mode"
Customer: "It's a MAC, it doesn't need safe mode"
MS: "Press the shift key at boot. What does it say now?"
Customer: "..."
something like that.

Yes, a huge, creepy coincidence, considering there are a whole 365 days to be born on.
(Sarcasm rides again! kekekekekekekekeke.)
Luis
July 23rd, 2007, 02:02 pm
creepy due to the number of days a person can be born in, and the ammount of people on the INTERNET, what are the odds of a person and I meeting, and that person posting a picture with the date both our siblings were born in?
Not saying its that rare..but its a coincidence.

Thats just BS O_o, thats stereotypical and retarded. (not cause yer talking bout macs)
1. The "clutter" is ussualy the dock.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j89/Siul1313/Ichigos/Picture1.png
- The dock can be shrunk
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j89/Siul1313/Ichigos/Picture2.png
- Put to the side
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j89/Siul1313/Ichigos/Picture4.png
-Or even hidden
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j89/Siul1313/Ichigos/Picture3.png
I assume you mean the dock, because the "Task Bar" (Im not sure if this is a common name throughout OSes) is at the top, and any icons left on the desktop are blamed on the user and not the OS. That leaves no other OS specific thing at the bottom.
At the end of the day, OSX can be as tidy as any other OS (IMHO) its up to the user to decide what clutter is, and when to get rid of it.

Thank you for calling me retarded, but I'm not the one using MacOS here, so please don't even think about calling me retarded, thank you.
And yes, the dock looks cluttered like hell. I personally think it's horrible (I've used a mac a few times and hated it).

Yeh I agree on the Gates thing, on the desktop...I think I'll agree aswell, Linux needs to unify somehow..but that would be..unlinux-y (or whatver) IDK how much diferent a linux/win box would be to a new user tho. Ex school with kids being introduced to computers, for nearly everything linux can be as good ifnot better afaik.
Seems an intresting experiment (wtf does the OLPC run?)
But...just one guys opinion.
