I gotta say, this is the first red civic that I've thought to look so "ricey" to me. For all the ones I've seen have decay and chipped paint... or faded...

But I agree with Luis, maybe some new rims, but I think you could lay of the skirts for now and worry more about the engine and maintenance than the looks.

The paints actually looks pretty good and well maintained... I take it the previous owner kept it in a garage?

Other than that I don't really have any plans yet :P

Then explain to me, what is the use of driving a gas guzzler like that, which is as practical for daily use as a boat made of sugar.

All those stupid trucks are just status symbols for guys with tiny dicks, nothing more than that. Look at me my bonnet is taller than your roof.. big deal. Unless you live in an area where roads are really bad (or not even there), or you have to transport lots of stuff, I don't see why anyone needs a pickup truck. Unless you're scared of speedbumps of course :P

Has the thought of hauling heavy equipment or trailers crossed your mind? If you don't have a truck, such tasks become very complex and almost impossible to preform.

No, there is no practical use from driving them everyday. There is, however, reason to have one, as some cannot afford to rent/buy a truck for situation that it is essential.

I don't buy cars for status, I get it for reliability and comfort, and fun. :bleh: At least the truck isn't high above the ground. It's actually lower compared to other trucks. It's lower than my Infiniti and only a 1" higher than my camry. :heh:

My sister drives a 100 BHP Astra station and it does fine in pulling trailers. And then we're talking about a car that runs on LPG, not petrol.

Usually people who want to drag trailers around buy a car with a diesel engine because those have much more power (and are more fuel efficient) than any petrol car.

Of course, Americans don't really know about diesel yet :P having large trucks run on petrol is... well, stupid since petrol just isn't the right fuel for that job x_x

Actually, in America, people who hauls around trailers and boats get diesel-powered trucks. So far, I haven't seen one using a truck with a petrol engine to haul things around. Only those that use it as a everyday car gets a truck with a petrol engine, which is not that many around here. ;)

I think the biggest diesel-powered truck available to us in America is a V10. Dodge, Ford, and Chevy has it only available in North America I think.

Oops, I made a mistake there :P I always heard people in America generally hate diesels because they're less smooth than a petrol V8 XD Although my uncle's A6 with a 2.4 TDI runs very smoothly :P

To be honest, I'd pick diesel over petrol because diesel is cheaper, and on top of that more fuel efficient.

Whiplash
May 15th, 2008, 09:15 pm
Diesel is more expensive in America (http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/sbsavg.asp) than regular unleaded fuel. Also, trucks that run on regular unleaded fuel are quite the minority, especially in places where a truck is actually more useful than a car. Further more, the smoothness in a truck largely variates between brands and models. Finally, if looking for a smooth truck, I highly doubt that only Americans would buy a regular unleaded fueled truck, I think it's rather common sense and nationality has nothing to do with it.

xpeed
May 15th, 2008, 10:46 pm
Yup, and America's greatest idiocy is making a hybrid pick-up truck. WHO the heck will buy a hybrid full-sized truck? Not to mention, it has worser fuel economy than a regular petrol truck.

I think they meant it in cars, not trucks. It's quite minuscule to see a diesel-powered car in America. Cars with diesel engine isn't popular here in the US. The only cars that offer diesel engines are the all of VW, M-Benz E-class, and....... you get the picture.

^ Haha, Ford doesn't even off diesel in any of the cars in America. Only trucks and big vans. Our Focus is quote a piece of shite compared to the Euro versions.

Over here small cars usually have petrol, and larger cars often have diesel, unless you're filthy rich, then you buy a big car with a petrol engine.

So if we take Volkswagen, the Fox would be petrol powered, the Polo would be mostly petrol and sometimes diesel, Golf would be mostly diesel and sometimes petrol, Passat would be diesel most of the time and then the Phateon would be petrol because that's only for people who have too much money.

Most Audi cars that are aimed at "normal" people are diesel over here, although the faster models of course are petrol.

Japanese cars are usually petrol although the past few years Toyota and Honda have been selling diesel powered cars, usually the Avensis or the Accord.

Generally diesel cars are bought by people who drive a lot for their work, since the diesel is cheaper.

xpeed
May 18th, 2008, 11:39 pm
^ That and diesel is more popular in Europe than America. We Americans are energy wasting, power hungry fools. :P

X
May 19th, 2008, 06:11 am
Why is diesel so superior?

Neko Koneko
May 19th, 2008, 06:17 am
It has more power, 40% of the energy in diesel is used for actually making the engine move, while that's only 25% or so with petrol (the rest is heat).

Diesel engines have more torque than petrol engines, so they don't have to rev up so much in order to deliver their maximum potential.

Something like that anyway. Problem is, even though they have a lot of power, without a turbo diesels are very slow. So they're good at pulling large loads, but it takes a long time to get moving. Lots of torque, little BHP.

Comparison: My brother has a Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI (Turbo-Diesel) with 130 HP on 1300 kgs, he uses 1 litre of fuel to drive 20 KM. My civic is 102 HP on 1000 kgs, with one litre of petrol I drive about 16 KM (and that's still very fuel efficient, most cars would do about 1 to 12).

My car revs up to 7000, a diesel generally doesn't go past 5000. Petrol engines have their power in the upper RPM regions, diesel has in in the lower regions. For that reason, diesel engines don't have to rev up so high and because of the higher torque they deliver more power per revolution of the engine than a petrol engine, thus they are more fuel efficient.

xpeed
May 19th, 2008, 07:47 am
^ Plus they don't require spark plugs. I've always wonder then how it actually gets the engine going.

M
May 19th, 2008, 10:25 am
I believe it involves pressure on the diesel fuel.

Neko Koneko
May 19th, 2008, 11:13 am
Yep, diesel self-ignites under high pressure so a spark plug isn't needed. That's also why in one episode of Junkyard wars, all teams wanted a diesel car because they had to go through water.

That's only because modern cars get a lot of filters installed that petrol engines simply don't have.

I believe in the US cars don't even have a Catalytic converter, or at least are not required to have one? Then why would they install Diesel particulate filters? XD

It's illegal to not have a catalytic converter in the US. It is required by law because of emissions law. California is really strict on it. The police in California are trained to spot cars that don't have them.

California basically sets the emissions and smog laws in the US because California has stricter laws than the rest of the country. Many foreign manufacturers use the California emissions law to set the standard.

Are you joking? Diesel is always 10% more expensive than petrol in Australia. Or at least Victoria. I'm pretty sure it's the same in all states. It usually sits at around 1.60-1.70 a liter.

Ok. I'm confused. XD

The engine I'm using is a Briggs and Stratton 18hp two cylinder horizontally opposed engine that is air cooled. I cleaned the carburetor/carburettor, flushed the gas lines, changed the oil, new spark plugs, bypassed the safety start-up solenoid, and gave it a new battery. We I go to start it, the engine begins to turn over then it somehow gets stuck and tries to turn over slowly as if there were some kind of torque applied in the opposite direction. I played around with the "blower" (that what the manual calls it XD) which is that rotating thing you see at the top of lawn tractors and push mowers. It turns a little and then it get really hard to turn and the cycle keeps repeating itself. What's wrong?

What does a strutbar do?

What Angelic said. It stiffens up your front suspensions from rolling the car to the side too much. It decreases your understeer which is common for all FWD cars. Plus, it provides better handling and quicker response.

I've noticed some improvements when I installed mine a month ago.

Black bonnets are something from the racing world. Drivers would paint the bonnet black, with a rough texture so it wouldn't reflect the sun in their eyes. Or something like that.

It's not like I chose to have it, it was like that when I bought the car.

edit: oh, and in the Dutch honda scene, a lot of people have black bonnets on a white, red or blue car. It's way better than neon, fat bumpers and the crap that the American tuning scene is full of.

well.., you provided 3 links, some say the top speed to be at 260mph... while the press release states:

The Weber press note reads: “For attaining a speed of 400 km/h, an automobile must have favorable aerodynamic features. The body of the WEBER SPORTCARS faster one measures 204 centimeters wide and 115 centimeters high. It is structured using ultra-light yet super-strong carbon fiber.

400km/h = 248mph...

The Aero did 242mph... in their failed test run.

then this happened:

September 13, 2007. The reported record speed came from an average of two runs in opposite directions, in accordance with Guinness Book of World Records rules. The first run clocked 257.41 mph (414.26 km/h) and the return trip 254.88 mph (410.19 km/h), with the average beating the Bugatti Veyron's top speed of 253 mph (407.16 km/h). The results of this test, verified by Guinness World Records on October 9, 2007, gave the SSC Ultimate Aero the title of world's fastest production car.

so basically... the Veyron and the SSC are already above the numbersthe "Faster One"'s manufacturers are throwing around. Even if we take the 260 number as a theoretical top speed not yet tested.. the 2008 SSC Aero with its new engine block and new gear setting has a theoretical top of 284.6mph (458km/h)

Funny thing is Aero cost 650k usd, a lot less the the webber... and also looks better (nothing on the veyron, but comeon.. look at the webber)

So basicaly at real speeds being quoted, its late, at theoretical speeds its late... kinda a crappy investment innit?

For more fun theoretical top speeds take a look at the dodge tomahawk.

Funny that sounds copied straight out of Clarkson's mouth (assuming it wasnt all quoted and I didnt misread), then again Porches are rear engined rearwheel drived, which you must admit is one hell of an achievement from an engineering standpoint.

And? Today's lamborghinis all have the engine in the back and have 4WD. Most Ferrari's have the engine in the back and are RWD. The Honda NSX has a RR layout. Same for the Toyota MR2.

Hell, even the original VW Beetle had the engine in the back. But then again, Porches are just upscaled beetles with a bigger engine.

Oh, I forgot, during the Cold War Skoda would create cars that had the engines in the back. Crappy cars but hey, they did have the engine in the back.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamborghini_Gallardo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamborghini_Reventón

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari (no individual links, as models are separated by engine type in index)
See how they are all mid engine?

I'll give ya half a point for the NSX and the MR2, since they are rear mid engine cars (RMR), rather than RR (rear engine, rear wheel drive) cars like most porsches.. Rear Engine = center of gravity of engine is behind rear axel, this means most of the car is.. well at the back and this creates oversteer... which is bad.

The props everyone owes porsche is they took a seemingly bad concept (loads of friggin oversteer) but said "hell this is how we wanted to do it" and still managed to make a great car out of it. Not about making a car with an engine in the back, its making a fast car with an engine in the back... thats still competitive around the track. Which the skoda and beetle cant do.

Oh and BTW, I find it ironic people calling Porsches souped up beetles, considering the fact that Lambo is owned by Audi.. and they're sharing parts, and I dont mean just engines... I mean friggin steering wheels. So yeah... thats whats special about it. :)

Neko Koneko
July 19th, 2008, 06:13 am
Ah, so there's is a difference between mid and actually in the rear... Okay, didn't know that. But then Porsches are even more big beetles XD

And there's not really anything wrong with cars sharing parts. There are so many supercars which share parts with normal every-day cars XD

And there's not really anything wrong with cars sharing parts. There are so many supercars which share parts with normal every-day cars XD

how to best illustrate this..

Audi RS4: http://www.audiforums.com/models/rs4/images/2007-Audi-RS4-Interior.jpg

Lambo Gallardo:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a1/Lamborghini_Gallardo_interior.jpg/800px-Lamborghini_Gallardo_interior.jpg

When I pay 2 times as much for a car... I expect a lot more performance, and.. atleast some "cool factor"

Sad thing is, the lambo costs 180k USD, while the RS4 goes for somewhere round 70k... with 0-60 times of 4.2 and 4.8 respectively (tho the latter has been clocked at 4.0)... well there goes performance dosent it? and once they guy gets out and has his whole family in the car aswell... you just look a bit like a tool for blowing twice as much money on little more than a badge dontcha?

So yeah... sharing parts does matter, especialy when yer buying top of the line.. and getting midrange components.

Neko Koneko
July 19th, 2008, 06:29 am
When buying Lambo, you also pay for the name and for the fact that it's much more exclusive than Audi (any Audi).

xpeed

The Honda NSX has a RR layout. Same for the Toyota MR2.

That's false actually. Honda NSX and the Toyota MR2 are MR. MR is when the engine is placed in the middle of the rear axle with rear wheel drive, where a RR, is when the engine is placed behind the rear axle and is rear wheel drive.

There's a big difference when it comes to performance because a car that is MR is more stable than a car that is a RR platform. It's also a drawback because a MR car is heavier than a RR car and the RR car can have the upper hand at some point on the track. A good car that can be used is between a RUF Porsche compared to Ferrari F430. RUFs place the engine behind the rear axle which it gives better traction at the rear since it's heavier, but it also causes more oversteer which is bad, so they solved the problem by placing ballasts in the front and better suspensions and settings to lower the chances of having the car oversteer and spin out. A Ferrari F430 is a MR car which has a bigger engine at the rear which means, heavier ass and more oversteer fun. Because it's a mid-ship rear engine car, it helps lower weight distribution on the car since the engine is placed further forward than a RR car.

One more thing: Ferrari had couple of cars with the engine in the front. Such examples are: 550 Maranello 575M, California, 456M, 612 Scaglietti, and the 599 GTB Fiorano.

What's wrong with your English? Well, let's see. You replace "you" with "u", which on its own is really annoying. Then, you don't use capitals (although I can live with that). Then, you use "wasnt" instead of "wasn't", which is wrong.

There, just three things in that one post. And then you ask me what's wrong with your English? :P

Hey Neko, my friend recently bought a 92 EG Civic. It's a tin can for now. So far, he stripped the inside 70%, no door handles because they broke, suspensions are shot to hell, and his muffler needs some reworking. Not to mention his shifter is jacked too, it doesn't sling back to the middle like it should and the shifter leans to the right so it's hard to shift the car to 3rd and 4th gear since you could miss-shift into 1 or 2 because of that broken piece. LoL.

But I drove it and it ran fine. He's planning to fix it from the ground up. I love EGs.

In the US, they're about $14k-$16k for a good one with that mileage. Why a Cooper? Why not a Honda Civic Si for $18k or a Scion tC for that matter?

You get the same mileage and more cargo.

Fiat 500 = iPod amongst cars. It's sleek, it's nice, it's cool, it's hip. But for the same money you can buy a different car that can do heaps more (like transport luggage, or friends).

Smart, Fiat 500, New Beetle and New Mini. They're all cars that appeal to women, because women don't look at a car as being something that has to work, they look at the shape and the colour. And these cars all have a high level of "cuddle-ness". Perfect cars for women (and people who try to be hip).

If you want a real car, you can get much more for less money.
