I have it at home(Firefox), I'm house sitting right now though so I can't fool around with their computer too much. I'm having fun playing different songs with the sound Alt+F4 makes though. I'm playing the mario theme song right now.
I don't think it's a virus, this is the only time it happened and it doesn't seem to be a consistent thing, just a freak occurance.

the language tools in windows xp are great for that... you can switch to hiragana input mode and type in romanji.
"hiragana" -> ひらがな

I despise Windows XP because it refuses to connect to the internet for me. Currently, I just use Microsoft's Japanese IME for Windows 98. Works just like the WinXP method you described. Now if only I could figure out what all those other options mean. O_o I found that Wordpad can save Unicode documents.

make sure you have the japanese language pack installed (search around on microsoft.com or go to any japanese site in IE and it will prompt you to download it), and it will show up in Japanese instead of squares
