when using Linux alt+f2 > start menu

Pressing two keys that are pretty far apart + some more CUI is faster and easier than pressing the windows key or twitching the mouse to the bottom left and clicking whatever you want. Right. [/sarcasm]

I can open whatever program I need in 0.2 to 0.7 seconds (if I'm not sure what I want). Sure, I have a high mouse sensitivity, but being used to it, this shit is effortless and blazing fast. Closing programs is the same principle, I dare anyone to try to close a program faster than a mouse twitch and near instantaneous right click.

Mac docs/apple in general is pretty lame. I tried on a friend's computer, and it's slow. There's like a full half second animation where the icon goes into focus. Laaaaaaaaaaame.

I would have multiple pictures but I haven't worked out how to do that yet lol. As for one big one, I don't think anyone has designed a 4320 x 900 res wallpaper yet. And yes my monitors are HD, 1440 x 900 is just the optimal viewing res, but that doesn't contribute towards the actually HD settings. I could make the res higher say 1980 x 1280 but then everything would be too small for me to see. While games would look awesome, I'm sure I'd start to lag lol.

Use Web Desktop (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/dual-monitors-use-a-different-wallpaper-on-each-desktop/) or a program like Ultramon (http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/).

Also, HD is still technically anything above 480p (which this number happens to be the "normal" definition, whereas LQ Definition still resides in the 240p). They base these numbers off of the standard resolution of TV monitors. Until all the TVs that use the 480ip are extinguished (which is drawing near), the terms are likely to stay this way.

Why? Just make one image that's twice as wide as one screen (so if your screen is 1440 wide, make it 2880) and paste the two wallpaper images next to eachother in the new image, save it and then set it to a desktop. Make it tile the image and problem solved, no annoying little tools needed.

Actually Microsoft was pretty quick in fixing most bugs in Vista, it was just that so many people tried it when it first came out and then switched back to XP and didn't give it another shot after the fixes that really ended up giving Vista a bad rap. It's actually a pretty decent OS now, I'm using it just fine on my laptop and wondering why it hasn't eaten me alive and stolen my soul yet (as so many people claimed it would...) It's been a great OS to me, all my games work fine, all my drivers are updated and it runs smoothly.

Majority (if not all) the complaints about Vista at this point is just a residual stigma from when it was released. Vista's both stable and complete. The only thing that it still is suffering from is its resource usage. Everything else works as it should. Well... At least, as it should in windows.

Agree, the only problem left is how much resources it uses. It's a bit ridiculous, I think, but maybe it's because I'm still in a mentality of older OS' and software that don't need so much power....

Well, that's true. But you have to also think how much memory and GBs it takes up. When I first got my laptop, it had Vista and it only had 1GB of RAM to work with. It was slow as hell, laggy, and very irritating to work with. I had to upgrade to a 2GB to see if it'll help. Barely even tapped it, so now I'm running a 4GB RAM and it's finally running smooth. BUt with all the updates and stupid installations every freaking week, it gets a bit old and annoying to see all that precious free space you have on your hard drive being sucked away because of all the updates and bugs Microsoft had to fix for Vista. Right now, after I reformatted and installed Vista fresh with the most recent updates and Service Pack 1 & 2, I only have 50 GBs left on my hard drive and the hard drive size is 80GBs. XP only takes up 13 GBs at most with updates and Service Pack 2. Like RD said, the amount of resources Vista takes is ridiculous. Absolutely Ridonculous.

This is all fine and good, but did you actually read the system requirements? Its recommended you have at least 1 GB of ram. This is just for the OS. Whatever else you run in the background or on top of windows requires more ram. The most notable applications that relate to this site being Finale and Adobe softwares, which simply funnel hecto-megabytes into their programs like it was candy. It's a general rule that you have 150% of what your typical running scheme's memory usage installed in your computer, as to prevent the slowness you've encountered. Which begs the question "What are you running on average?"

Also, are the programs your running from previous generations? Are the programs made by reliable, dependable, well-informed individuals? If you answered no, then it's likely that there'll be a compatibility program needed to wrap itself around the process in order to execute as expected, which slows everything down.

And don't go on about how Windows 7 is better in statistics on this. All that they did was change the window rendering system. The WDDM was revised so that the rendering of windows (what is drawn to the user) is scheduled in parallel rather than unilaterally. The OS isn't faster, the rendering of the response is. To use the buzz-words: "Windows didn't get faster, it got smarter".

Also, a stock XP installation with all the device drivers vista provides, network security, Aero, .NET requirements, and service packs up to 3; it's actually about 13 GBs. Considering that users DEMAND backwards compatibility with newer OSes, I can easily see everything bloating the extra 7 GBs for older programs that don't understand the newer OS features, the security flaws these old libraries have, and the quagmire of terrible developers whom wish not to learn the new system to work properly.

---

The Battle of OSes isn't as black and white as End Users make it out to be. In fact, I expect that 90% of the users that visit Ichigos to go "Huh?" to what I just typed out above, clueless on the terms used, saying that the WDDM has nothing to do with any of this without even looking it up, and going off of their personal experience which can slant from professional to downright idiotic computer users (such as the person that didn't understand why IE was going so slow (http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2522/iemess211.jpg)). As much as I like to bash Microsoft, this isn't the right way to attack them.

People who bash Vista are either:

1.) n00bs who don't know what they're talking about
2.) MS/Vista bashers cos bashing MS/Vista is so cool nowadays

I run Vista on an old single core AMD Athlon 3000+ with 1.5 GB of memory, and it runs fine. Better than XP did.

If you're a moron, then Vista won't work well for you on old hardware. If you're willing to put just a little bit of effort in it, Vista is so much better than XP'll ever be.

Before I start, thanks for pointing out my typo. I meant to say 13GB is taken up using XP with all the service packs and updates.

Yes, I have read the specs, and I was expecting it to run smooth with the current spec I had when I first got Vista which had 1GB of RAM. That is why I bought 2GB of RAM to run it better, and like I said before. IT didn't work out quite the way I was expecting it to be, more like it didn't do much so that is why I have 4GB of RAM right now. On average, I don't have much installed on my computer. I do know that having adobe programs will significantly "slow" down the processing speed of Vista, but that's a given. But let me answer your question as in what I'm running on average "before" I installed Adobe programs.

Windows Office XP Word and Powerpoint, Mozilla, Winamp, and video codecs.

With only those programs, I was having difficulty with the OS, let alone installing Service Pack 1 and 2 and this was before I upgraded to 4GB of RAM. I didn't even dare to install Adobe programs back then, that's what my desktop was for. But now that I have 4GB, I have installed Adobe programs in my laptop that has the Vista OS and I'm not complaining, it works great and smoothly. My general argument is that Vista needs updates every week, and new ones come out at least 3 times per month. It's ridiculous because each of those updates take away more resources in my computer in which I never had to deal with when I'm running XP. Kind of get my point? I'm not complaining how slow Vista is, I'm just complaining how annoying it is to have updates every other week. It gets old and pretty annoying. @_@ Still, having 30GBs of your space sapped up for Vista, it's pretty ridiculous. I rather have 13gbs taken than 30gbs.

Also, I didn't say that Windows 7 is faster. I know it's much smarter, but it's still the same as Vista. But compared to Vista, XP, and 7, I prefer Vista only because 7 only came out for a week and there are no feedback on problems yet. So till then, I'll wait.

Neko Koneko

Nope. It's available. Just not in any retail stores. It's pretty big. I've seen it in person. There's a special back pack for it when you need to carry it from one place to another. I know because I had to borrow some of his video equipment. He literally let me borrow his hard drive and told me that his life is in my hands...literally it was. LOL. His profession is main reason why he has such a thing. (He works for a media production company directly incorporated with Hollywood studios)

I wouldn't spit nonsense if I haven't seen it in person. The 1.5-4TB hard drives are for household use available for the consumers. The one he has is for business owners and professionals so it's not available in any retail stores. That's why you couldn't find it.

I'm currently thinking about getting a 2TB internal hard drive for my new computer I'm building. I'm also thinking about getting a 500GB hard drive for my laptop as well. 80GB doesn't quite cut it for me. '__'

For some odd reason, the way your desktop icons are arranged are making me frustrated. Perhaps its because it cuts half of them in half.

They only look like that because I'm using a desktop management program called Fences; which is essentially just a bunch of boxes with scrollbars. I find it useful cause 1, you can turn them off and just admire the wallpaper, and 2, because you can chuck as many icons as you want in them, and it'll only take up as much space as you want it to. Here's the link for anyone who's interested:lol:

http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

Oh, and almost forgot to add that you can shape the boxes how you want, and with my resolution, it just ends up being that some icons get cut in half because of the box size.

I think everyone just needs to come to terms that a lot of anime is made for creepy 33 year old guys who smell and live in cramp apartments full of anime toys and posters... of the same three characters who happen to be girls. Anime is creepy, why the hell are most of the females depicted young girls or really slutty?

And don't go on a cheer parade when you see boobs when watching an anime, and claim it's your male hormones. It's a cartoon, darlings, cartoon boobs.

Gee, now that you mention it....................

The only thing I can think of is in Eureka Seven, there's a nude woman on the cover of the book that Holland and Dewey can be seen reading (the book is The Golden Bough by Sir James George Frazier for anyone interested). That book has no sexual meaning and it also has a connection to the show itself (now now, I'm not gonna spoil it:P).

And not all anime is aimed at creepy men however. Although, I'd say a lot would be...........

Actually, the new filetype should be the end of filetypes for Office Documents. They switched from a very closed binary format which offers little forward thinking and switched over to an XML format which is about as open as you can get and allows for newer things that would break the older file format.

If you didn't understand that, trust me when I say that this is a good thing. Also, there's a 2007/8 converter pack available for those that run an older version of Office to open the new file format.

It's 2007, 2008 is for Mac. And like M said, you can download a free converter pack for older Office versions (back to Office 97 I believe). You even get the link from Word when you try to open one of these new file formats.

@Rainingsilver: Upgrading the ram costs a lot of money. And plus the one I really need to upgrade is an IBM Thinkpad which IBM doesn't own anymore.

RAM is actually kinda cheap nowadays isnt it? Im talkin with knowledge a couple months old...but yeah still way cheaper than replacing a whole computer.

And... what does upgrading a thinkpad...have to do with IBM owning thinkpads?
(For someone more in the know than me: did IBM stop owning the thinkpad name.. or just let someone else make the units? Ive heard of lesser build quality but never of them no longer owning em)

Neko Koneko
January 20th, 2010, 09:32 pm
Benopia is a n00b, n00bs shouldn't think of upgrading RAM themselves. They'll get hurt :P

Besides, even if IBM doesn't make thinkpads anymore, that doesn't mean you can't get stuff for it anymore. Although it's probably expensive now, but that has more to do with the fact that it's ancient hardware than the fact it's not owned by IBM anymore.

Actually, IBM hasn't made a laptop for years now. Lenovo took over a long time ago.

No correction there M, less RAM = more swapping = a slower computer. Adding ram reduces swapping thus increasing speed.

Erm... Most computers run at full speed if your only doing one thing at a time. This is why I said "more things at the same time".

The only time swapping occurs is when you're doing more than one thing. Such as playing music, having banzai buddy monitor you, and browsing the web.

Neko Koneko
January 21st, 2010, 08:00 pm
Which is what most people do, causing their computers to slow down. Adding more memory will speed it up since it'll reduce swapping.

M
January 21st, 2010, 08:06 pm
But that's a consequential speed increase, meaning you'll approach the speed in which your computer should be at. You're still bottlenecked by your processor's speed. If you truly want to increase your speed, you need to upgrade your processor. If you want to increase your ability to do more things, you add more RAM.

You think to much like a nerd. Try thinking like an enduser (which is what most people around here are). More ram = less harddisk activity = more speed.

I get your point, it's just that you view things from the view of a computer nerd. Don't do that when your amongst non-nerdy people :P

Haha, but don't look down on nerds, given the chance, they can become really successful in life. ^_^ Need I mention Bill Gates? The only time when you can bully nerds is when they keep telling you how intelligent they are or how stupid the people around them are. :P

And I really hate the witch person in the background. In fact, I also hate the blue haired girl. Just that the person between them looks so kick-ass she compensates for the overall suckiness of the wallpaper XD

Caring-loving, and then abrasive. It's reversing the order of a pure tsundere's archetype. It describes Moka's (the person in the middle) character in the anime.

I've decided that my desktop computer was really getting too slow and unreliable x_x So I replaced it with my laptop

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/aboot/desktop_240110.jpg

Dual screen ftw! Usually the right screen just has Opera Fullscreen (or whatever program I'm using at that particular moment)

edit: I've actually watched the first four episodes now, basically it's seto no hanayome in a gothic/youkai highschool setting with more pantyshots and more fights, and cool bats flying around giving random information about things.

The characters aren't even half as annoying as I expected them to be, though they're all pretty standard.

I don't get the "Doctor" Wallpaper, all I see is a lot of girls yelling doctor. The only thing that I can guess is that the only guy in the picture is an STD carrier, and that he had casual sex with every one of the girls, and now all of them are infected with the virus, with some being dead already. Can someone help clarify my doubt? ^_^

Technically they're not illegal because they were evaluation copies. But they will do interesting things when March rolls around (a mandatory restart every 2 hours). Only when June 1st his will users have a unusable system. [1 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/release-candidate-Windows-7)]
