Lol, I'd take the stone so I can smash Apple goods. Apple products are for stupid people. The guy who teaches me to play guitar works for Apple, and he agreed that if Apple made a guitar, it would:

1.) Only have one string
2.) You'd only be allowed to play songs that are approved by Apple

And you'd probably have to buy them on iTunes first, too.

it's also harder to crack than an iPad apparently (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/hackers_already_find_ways_jailbrak_ipad)

I'm not going to go into 'fanboy' mode and bag it to the reject shop and back, but if the same exploit was in the iPhone, don't you think they would have done something? I'm also disappointed with the programs and features (they had one outside of JB Hifi today as a demo). It seriously is just a big iPod Touch.

I think I'll just stay with my 2005 model HP PDA. So far its always been able to do more.............

Whiplash are you a 2010er?
I got a 1930 on my SATs the first time then a 2060. I'm a horrible test taker and I think SATs should die.
In America, in addition to the 3 subjects - Math, Critical Reading and Writing
students are also required to take a minimum of 2 subject test (ie Language/ History/ more Maff +Engrish)
and bloody hell I had to dwell over that shit for a good two years because I had to take so damn many (I took 4 subjects cos Harvard wouldn't count Chinese and they required three)

In the end I got into UPenn and Georgetown (UCLA, Berkeley and UCSD/UCDavis but those were backups) and it def wasn't because of my shitty, uncompetitive SAT scores.
but yes. Harvard waitlisted me and so did Princeton (see? they do matter to an extent because you have to pass a certain "look-at-me-ima-fucking-genius" SAT score threshold).

I regret not trying out ACTs.

Even though SATs don't actually measure how smart you REALLY are. I suggest you try on them just cos Colleges do look at them and require a certain threshold score to consider you

(I took 4 subjects cos Harvard wouldn't count Chinese and they required three)
Silly Eternal, the Chinese language doesn't matter in America. The only languages that matters in America is US English, Spanglish, and some bastardized form of English called Ebonics. After all, French, German, Russian, and Arabic are not the the most widespread languages at all.

I regret not trying out ACTs.
Don't. The ACT is really only supported by the Central and Mid West states. New England and Pacific states prefer the SAT. Not to mention the ACT has the weirdest scoring system that takes forever to understand (out of 36, each point is about 60 points on the SAT with writing, unequally balanced aggregation of five subjects).

Luis
April 7th, 2010, 01:14 am
Spanglish is something I can't make a decision on.

While taking terms and their connotations from both languages can lead to quicker/more specific expression it annoys me when people use this exclusively as means of communication.

I also find myself randomly being unable to express a specific idea without resorting to the other language which worries me a ton, as I feel my already limited vocabulary is slipping.

Please leave spanglish for quick exchanges or to clarify something rather than as a go to resource...

Eternal
April 7th, 2010, 01:24 am
haha its not cos they don't count chinese for being chinese it's cos the requirement was "you cannot take your native language" thats called cheating. which i did because I really didnt care to learn another language and expand my horizon.

Dude the ACTs were soooo much easier I heard. Friends went in and got a 35 straight up. But then again, those kids are genius and I prolly wouldnt have dont so well cos Im really weak at multiple choice.
BTW my friend got into UM for Business :)
she might stay in Cali for Berkeley cos its closer to home though D:

M
April 7th, 2010, 02:29 am
ACT questions are easier, but you have to answer them faster. There's 75 questions in the English section, and you only have 45 minutes to answer them. The SAT has about 80 questions over 90 minutes.

It's a tradeoff of speed vs quality.

Whiplash are you a 2010er?

Nah, I graduate in 2011. I'm still a young'in. My plan is to go to University of Colorado @ Boulder, as I stated earlier. Denver University is also a consideration for me. My only problem is I've only taken two years of spanish (in the Eighth and Ninth grade) and UCB and DU require three and four years of a foreign language respectively. So, I'm gonna have to take a language when I'm in college, which totally blows. Though, I'm thinking, since I'll have to take three (or four) years of a language, I might as well take a language that I want to take. So, I'll probably end up taking French (I've always wanted to learn it, but in the eighth grade, my school only offered Spanish).

Also, I'm curious. I haven't spoken to anybody about this before, I've just looked at the universities' webpages, but, will not having the required years of foreign language hurt my acceptance chances? I figure it will hurt alot more for getting admitted into prestigious schools, but considering the hardest school I'm trying to get into is DU, I'm thinking it won't be a big deal, especially since I'll be paying out of state tuition. The guidelines just said that if I don't meet the requirements for being accepted into the university, I'll have to make up those credits during college (Also, will my foreign language credits count towards my degree? Or are they just extra credits that I have to take? I imagine this may be school specific, but, just tell me how you think it will be plox =D).

Longest post I've made in a while. Thanks for the advice in advance whoever.

Im taking the ACT next year. I took a practice one required by our school this year, and it was surprisingly easy. The majority of the science section was reading charts and graphs and such stuff of that nature. I did struggle with the grammar section, but that's because i'm an idiot. I kinda feel a little split between the two tests though. I'd rather take the SAT over the ACT, but not by much. I believe most colleges accept both nowadays, but I don't even know what colleges I want to go to or careers that I have in mind. So it doesn't even matter yet O.o
And my cumulative GPA is doo doo right now since I screwed up my freshman year so much.....
Im on a one way track to a prestigious community college of my choice if I keep doing what i'm doing now.

my post will look long because I quoted you. Try to look at collegeboard.com they usually have pretty accurate stats of what the colleges look for. There is a difference between a requirement and a recommendation. For example it was "recommended for me to take 4 years of math and 4 years of science" but I was like fuck this shit I don't wanna try physics out and I dropped it. For safety reasons, I would recommend you to take another year of language.

credits unless AP/ IB/ junior colleges will not count towards college. If its a college requirement to take it. you gotta bite down and take it. However, that is different from a requirement to GET IN, in which case, yes take it.

You can get into Harvard with only a 2060 on the SATs? Ivy League isn't as hardcore as everyone makes it out to be, apparently. I got a 1980 on my SATs my first go without even trying. = \

You were wait listed, at least. That still surprises me, with the 2060. I'm not selling you short, by the way; I'm just surprised Harvard even looks at applicants with SATs in the 2000s range - I thought the competition was so fierce, that anything lower than a 2200 or so would be impossible to get noticed with. I mean, you even got away with only taking three years of science (or was it math?) That surprises me, too.

Then again, like you said, you did the community service and such, so I guess that helped. Being cute couldn't have hurt you either, I suppose.

It's just that I knew of like five monsters in my class alone who got 2200+s on their SATs, and had near-perfect GPAs, and even they didn't go to any especially famous schools. Then again, maybe they didn't apply...

Anyway, hope you get in. The five monsters I mentioned were all self-centered douchebags with no people skills whatsoever, so I'd rather see people like you in Harvard than them anyway. XD
Ask around for advice on how to help your chances of getting off the wait-list and into a class. Don't let your hard work go for nothing; you might be one small push away from getting in! Good luck Eternal! =D

Also, you should've taken physics. It was one of the few classes in highschool worth taking, IMO. It was really interesting. XP

For safety reasons, I would recommend you to take another year of language.

Retake the SAT before considering the Language option. Language at a college is classified as an extra rather than a requirement (though recruiters push for it). They (the college) just like to make it a big deal since there's no official language in America.

Also, you should've taken physics. It was one of the few classes in highschool worth taking, IMO. It was really interesting. XP

Bwahahaha. High School physics is not College physics. Not until your high school stops illustrating physical concepts conceptually (which is essentially the wrong Aristotle physics, vs the newer and accepted Newtonian or Chaos Physics).

I'm not so sure about that, honestly. Not that I think you belittle people - I think you're a benign person on the whole, really. I just think you like to hand out information a bit too much; I've heard its best to only give advice when its asked for, and that seems pretty sound. Eternal said she skipped physics in highschool, and I told her that was a shame, because I had a lot of fun in physics in higschool. I never mentioned anything about a college physics class, and I definitely never said a highschool physics class was the same as a college one. I don't see how, with such limited information, you could assume I didn't know highschool and college classes were different, or that I was implying college and highschool classes were the same. Because of this, your comment (as do many of your comments) seemed to come out of left field for me.

When I get a comment out of nowhere like that, I assume:
a.)"This bastard is trying to pick a fight over here"
or
b.)"This guy likes to hear himself talk"
c.)"This kind soul is trying to help me out, without looking down at me or looking up at himself" happens sometimes, but these occasions are easy to spot, because there are always winged porkers flying about, and I'm too busy trying to shoot me some bacon out of the sky to be assed with the advice I've just received.

So, yeah! I'd never peg you as a Class-A. You're definitely a cool, nice guy. You've got a "B" next to your name in my little book as of right now, though. But like I said, I'll try looking at your comments in a more positive light from now on, if you insist you're just trying to be informative. And again, sorry for calling you out on bragging if you're not actually bragging. Being a Class-B myself, I might just be projecting my personality onto your posts. XD

Hopeless doesn't know much about college, considering he dropped out. He did pretend to be going to college for a while though. Maybe that counts for something Jimmeh.

Also finished watching Serial Experiments Lain; one of the best shows I've ever seen.

It might be if you like looking at wires. I personally find it one of the most boring anime I've ever seen, and it's generally only liked by people who like to act as if they're really smart by watching some supposedly "deep" anime with some vague story and all that, that you usually wouldn't fully understand after watching it just once.

Na, I'd rather watch Evangelion again then. Same stuff but with a neater package and giant biomechanical robots

Actually, I find it's usually the reverse; the people who act like they're too good for these smart ("smart?") shows are usually the ones trying to pretend to be smart. I've met so many psuedo-intellectual assholes who've hated Evangelion, it's not even funny. And I don't even know that many people that watch anime! Every normal person I've met likes the show, though. Smart people, too. I mean, it's common sense, isn't it? What's even smarter than being smart enough to enjoy something intelligent? Being so smart as to be above it, obviously!

I haven't seen Lain, so I can't judge that one, though. I've heard it was great from a few people, and boring from a few others. I'm not really in a rush to watch it, though. If it's Evangelion minus the characters, awesome music and animation, and giant robots, then you can count me out. I liked Evangelion for the "stupid" stuff, not the "smart" stuff. =D

Yes, but I find the fun in watching something like Lain or Evangelion is trying to interpret and understand it and watch how everything is presented; and even if there isn't some "big" or "deep" meaning in it, its still fun to try and think of what it might be. Of course everyone isn't going to see it the same way, but that just makes it more interesting.

Well, Texhnolyze (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qioR-bjJAxo) follows the same premise as SEL, so you'll likely enjoy that.

I'll have to check it out. I probably won't like it as much if its exactly the same presentation of the themes (eg, the wired and its relation of the "real" world). However I'll still give it a shot, also does anyone know if Denno Coil is any good? Just from reading up on it, it seems to follow the same concepts as SEL to some extent.

It's not entirely the same. It just features humans interfacing with robotics technology and detached personal introspection. Although, I feel as though it's a notch down from Lain in this sense for reasons I cannot say without spoiling it...

SEL's major plot point is the Lain interface which is a computer program superimposed onto a human's perception though the use of the psyche circuit, or the circuit that allows human senses to be experienced within the Wired. In Texhnolize, the story's centered around a man that was given a cybernetic implant which allowed direct and indirect perceptions in the town Lukuss, and a syndicate which creates the implants. Kinda polar opposites, but following similar elements.

And Dennou Coil couldn't be any further away from Lain. It's not nearly as abstract, that's for certain. I'd still highly recommend it if you like cyberpunk titles that focus on the blurring of personal and cyber reality (the world with and without glasses, and the merger of the two through hacking). I personally found that Dennou Coil to be an utterly fantastic series, although a bit slow on the startup, bringing a new light to a well overused flavor in the cyberpunk genera. It deserves more awards across the world.

The point is though, with a lot of those "deep" series the makers didn't intend it to be "deep". Take evangelion, Gainax admitted they included the whole religion aspect in there "because it's cool". And then people are still trying to be smart by analysing it. I think it's kinda ridiculous to search for a message the makers of a series never even put in there in the first place.

The point is that simply because something was not made with the explicit intent of having a certain level of depth does/shouldn't stop the consumer (if you will) from searching for it and drawing conclusions/theories/ideas from the presented material.

While I'll agree with the possibility that Gainax's intent might not have been to have depth with relation to religions of any kind or etc. (assuming what you say is true.) I still hold you should piss in your own cereal as much as you do in others.

Both of you deserve it for blindly following a yes or no position instead of partaking in civilised discussion of possible interpretations or the exploration of related material, hell even the effects of the series in general awareness of certain topics within the anime fan community....

But how could you look for a message that's not there? A message is communication from one person to another, if Person A (Gainax) never intented to give out a certain message (say, some deep religious message), how could that message ever reach Person B (the viewers).

The only way to receive a message that isn't there is by misinterpreting what's being said (in this case, the whole anime).

It's like me saying that I like green apples and therefor you're convinced that I hate oranges. I never said that, you'd just be making it up.

I kind of agree, but a creator doesn't have to purposefully make something deep for it to be deep. Sometimes, things are funny, even though the creator didn't want them to be. They're still funny, right? Sometimes people make things that are beautiful, even if that wasn't their main goal. They're still pretty, right? Sometimes simply telling an honest story will make the story deep and enlightening to other people, even though the story seems pretty ordinary to the storyteller. I think that's how genius usually works, actually. Gainax's Daicon, for example, makes me incredibly happy whenever I see it. Even though Gainax's goal with Daicon (IV) was probably just to draw a hot bunny girl fighting a bunch of pop-culture characters, their hard work and love for their craft shines through to me, which makes it very uplifting to me. Did they mean for Daicon to be "deep?" No, almost definitely not. Is it deep anyway? In my opinion, yes, very much so. I think the difference between Daicon's deep and mainstream's "deep" is that the latter is pretentious bullshit, whereas the former is pure art.

So, I agree with you in the sense that I don't see why anybody would want to find "hidden messages" in their shows, but I don't agree that they're not there. You draw once in awhile, right? You should know that art is made up of 90% hard work and 10% happy accidents, hahah. =D

Hey, that's what professional comedians do!

Which brings me to this...

It's what you personally get out of the piece that matters.
A creator doesn't have to spoon-feed you about what the piece is supposed to mean or what you're supposed to get out of it, just like how we draw meaning from things that happen in our own lives or from other people's lives. There is no correct meaning, is there?

But there is a difference between being personally moved or inspired by a piece, and how Shakespearean historians still worship the OMG A PLAY WITHIN A PLAY thing or how some literary critics argue about whether Peter Pan is gay.

There's a drop-off there.

It is universal, but it's also the most difficult to receive blood because it requires the exact same blood type.
Meaning that the O Rh-

Rare (http://chapters.redcross.org/ca/norcal/phys/geninfo_onegshor.html): Only 7% caucasians, 4% African and <3% asian
Requires donors to also be O Rh-, which incrementally makes it more rare than the other blood types, which can have have a different donor type

Mind you I did make the mistake saying that O Rh- is the rarest (which is apparently AB Rh- (http://www.lifeshare.org/facts/bloodtypes.htm)), but it's certainly not the most common.

Actually, I haven't been since January. I'm too busy with my capstone and parallel processing projects. My group's pool game implementation has about 700 pages worth of content that I manage and my parallel processing report is a 90 page summary and 30 minute presentation over parallel implementations of Charm++, Erlang, and JoCaml from a pragmatic C standpoint.

To be correct, six months worth of typing. The number just sounds huge because I lumped it into one value. It's only about 4 pages every day.

So awesome. Games nowadays are full of shiny graphics and boring cutscenes. But not the old games! Games like Contra didn't need them!

Listen to that! When that song is playing, you know it's time to SHOOT ALIENS IN THE FACE. No need for lengthy dialog! No need for explanations! Your goal is obvious! Don't die, and kill everything! Just the way games were meant to be! X3

Ah, all right. That's not too bad then. I still don't see how you've racked up 700 pages for a 2D pool game, though. I'm working on that platformer/adventure right now, and I'll be surprised if I have a hundred pages of code/notes when the whole thing is finished...either you're much more thorough than I am, or I'm doing it wrong and I'll be in for a nasty surprise down the road. Well, we wrote our documentation in such a way that just about anyone can jump into the game at any time and not be lost. There's nothing worse than being the poor sap that just joined a project and doesn't understand a single thing about it and there isn't a document that could make sense out of everything. Thus, with this philosophy, we applied it to our process model (FDD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feature_Driven_Development)). All the information is stand alone and to standard, so even if we were to be audited via ISO 9000 or even SPICE, we'd at least achieve a level 3 rating. Not to mention, our project report contains a complete backlog of activities performed (bugs, edit logs, baseline changes, old scheduling, weekly presentation notes, meeting transcripts, and more), so it's really a complete log of all things done for the project for the last six months.

Out of all of the documentation, only about 200-300 pages amount to the big three documents (management plan, requirements outline, and detailed design spec), and they're scattered with diagrams and charts. The rest is just project history.

Yeah, after I posted and shut my computer down, I thought "maybe it's because he's on a team, actually?" It makes sense that you'd need to keep everybody on the same page, so maybe seven hundred pages isn't as much as it sounds like. I still think it's a little overboard for simple games like the ones we're making, but it's probably a great exercise, assuming you'll be moving onto much bigger projects in the future, where such documentation will become very useful. =)

I would be interested in reading such a report.
Aye, same. I'm curious as to how M is keeping such a large report organized and useful. It's something I'll have to start doing to, when I move onto larger things. My notes are only focused on little segments, just to help me think through a problem. After the problem is solved, they're basically useless to me, since they're so messy. I have no idea how I'd keep seven hundred pages of notes useful to my teammates, or even myself. =(

Standards (which apparently cost money for viewing :\) :
All of our head development documents are fit inside of these documents in their appropriate headings.
IEEE 830-1998 (Software Requirements Specification) (http://standards.ieee.org/reading/ieee/std_public/description/se/830-1998_desc.html)
IEEE 1016-1998 (Software Design Description) (http://standards.ieee.org/reading/ieee/std_public/description/se/1016-1998_desc.html)
IEEE 1058-1998 (Software Project Management Plan) (http://standards.ieee.org/reading/ieee/std_public/description/se/1058-1998_desc.html)
OMG UML 2.0 (http://www.omg.org/technology/documents/modeling_spec_catalog.htm#UML)
OMG OCL 2.0 (http://www.omg.org/spec/OCL/2.0/)

Software:
Visual Studio 2008 Professional
Microsoft XNA Professional 3.1
Microsoft Project
Microsoft Visio
Tigris Subversion 1.6
Debian Linux stable (Lenny) with head Apache and PHP
SSL Encryption signed by the CA.
Dokuwiki
MantisBT
Doxygen
TortiseSVN
Inkscape
GIMP
TeX Live 2009
Perl 5.10

Each software has instructions on usage and RMMM. For example, we use subversion and were originally using AnhkSVN, but AnhkSVN broke in the middle of development, thus we consulted the RMMM which had a migration policy to TortiseSVN. In particular, tracking of bugs and documentation is performed in house using the built in difference logs of MantisBT and Dokuwiki. Upon completion of a major milemark, the documentation is regenerated from the dokuwiki markup into LaTeX for hard copy distribution.

The Wiki is structured by each of the above outlined standards having a namespace for each document, followed by each heading. Each class has every function outlined with pseudocode similar to this:

context rec Demo::Factorial(Integer number): Integer
(-)Computes factorial recursively
pre: number.foreach(>0);
if number.foreach(<= 1);
return 1;
else
return number.foreach(*Factorial(number.foreach(-1)));

We also adhere to the FDD (http://www.nebulon.com/articles/fdd/latestfdd.html) process, which directs (in order, allowing up-down traction):
feasibility studies and object refactoring directed to feature lists and extensions of application
refactoring for iteration changes,
directed code assignments
Sequence diagrams to explain dataflow between objects
Pseudocode generation and documentation for class prototypes
Writing the physical code modeled after pseudocode and descriptions
Detailed testing and usability factoring
Generation of performed tasks per iteration with reference identifiers

Everything's generally systematic and streamlined. Very rarely do I need to intervene with anything since it's all written to a standard, which means there's very little room for creative writing (or should I say careless in this case).

Group of friends and I finally got a band up and going, and I also know a guy who does recording to boot XD The only problem is what is our music style. Atm its a bit of blues, jazz, funk, metal, gothic and industrial. Maybe we can invent a new genera

Wait, industrial's a genre?

Yep. It's a form of rock that pulls from techno (taking patterns) and noize (taking environmental sounds). A good example of Industrial music is Nine Inch Nails Zero Sum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gh2atRW2Qg). Another popular one is the artist Mortiis, which takes in a lot of opera-like aspects; such as Mental Maelstrom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVwpNDV7hLg).

You do. It's called depression. It comes from either being overwhelmed by your goals, or having no goals to strive towards. There really isn't any other reason anybody would want to sleep for that long. Kekekekekekeekeke. >:3

Or maybe you just have a sleeping disorder and aren't getting quality sleep for some reason. Are you tired if you wake up after eight hours of sleeping, or do you just sleep extra long because you don't see any reason to do otherwise? Five hours a day is a lot of time to waste. If you live to be 85, and continue your current sleeping habits, it'll be the same as wasting almost twenty years of your life time. Next time you reach for the snoose button, think about that! Twenty years is a lot of time to throw away just because it feels nice, right? XP

Sleeping is for the dead, Eternal! Fighting is for the living! Fight, fight, fight!

I still can't delete that mp4 file from my desktop. = \
I tried deleting it from cmd and everything. Tried killbox, too. Nothing works. It won't go away! Scanned it with AVG, and AVG says it's clean. I think that's bullshit, for some reason.
Am I going to have to reformat my computer because of one stupid file stuck on my desktop? Doesn't Windows have a "FUCKING KILL IT WITH FIRE!" button?!

Safe mode?

And I finally understand what the people meant with they were talking about my Y-Shirt (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Y-shirt). Weird names for fancy clothing.

Safe mode?
Nope, no luck. No matter where I am, when I tell it to delete a file, it just comes up with the "deleting file" dialog and hangs there forever. If I try deleting it from the command prompt, it just acts like it deleted it even though it didn't. If I use Killbox to try deleting it, it just says the file cannot be deleted. And my Explorer keeps on hanging and restarting for no reason. It's some serious bullshit. I don't feel like reformatting, but it looks like I might have to. What a stupid problem!
