For some reason, VLC is having a hard time playing mkvs for me right now. The screen doesn't update half the time, and just sits there while the subtitles continue to change, or the screen updates only in little portions, with crazy square artifacts all over the picture. Has anyone else had this problem? Know how to fix it?
And lol <3 Genki Rockets.

VLC has long been known for having poor MKV support. This is due, in part, to their desire to guarantee the most stable playback possible on even the oldest formats. The MKV decoder used in the current revision is freaking old (last time I remember, it was something like verison 0.6, whereas most players are at 1.x). In addition, the way VLC indexes MKV files is that it does not index them at all. This is why you see all of the B-frames shattering your screen as you seek through the file. Given that your video is a x.264, it's likely your CPU can't keep up with the video without a buffer (VLC does not use your graphics card at all to help with video rendering), and thus is unable to successfully draw the delta frames and revive the picture until the next major i-node frame. Another problem may be the audio seeking, which VLC very clearly states "we're a video player, not an audio player", thus they don't really care much about the audio drivers, which is quite detrimental for container formats that have tracks (read: MKV and MP4) for obvious reasons. The only real solution for this is to either: 1) Petition with VLC to update their codec repositiory to break older videos, but ultimately fix the seeking in newer videos -- wouldn't suggest, as they pretty much told another person with a similar problem to fuck off get a faster computer -- or 2) find another directshow media player which has similar capabilities to VLC.

tl;dr - Get (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html) a real (http://www.cccp-project.net/) media (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_mega_codec_pack.htm) player.

Yeahhh, figured it was something like that. My older mkvs work fine, and I haven't used vlc in a bit, but anything new I download has tons of problems. I'm only using vlc now because MPlayer randomly quit working on me. I'll try reinstalling that though, and see if that fixes it...
Edit: Yeah, just installed the newest MPlayer, and the fucking thing still doesn't work. The program itself opens no problem, but if I tell it to open a video file, it just sits there. Which sucks, because MPlayer worked perfectly before.

Have you tried different video filters? Sometimes the directx display method sucks (not to mention, isn't a part of the main mplayer code). Try something like OpenGL (fast) or VDPAU if you have a nvidia card.

The only problem I have with CCCP is that they broke the law not too long ago with using the CoreAVC codec alpha in one of their installations without paying for it. Mind you, it's not a factor at this point as it's using directshow and libavcodec, but I don't like it when a software producer, not a user, breaks the law.

The confusion you have when reading charts is something that is directly proportional to the number of charts that you have seen that are the same type. It's all about learning the syntax of the chart. Once you know how to read them, they're not confusing at all.

In fact, that chart above summarizes about 3000 lines of program code which ranges from being extremely simple to read to incomprehensible.

The problem with whitepaper is that it has a limit, and moving major portions of the chart to a new location is far easier on a computer canvas than on whitepaper. Especially when they're freakishly huge, like the one plotting out all paths (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/783044/Tsukihime-Flowchart.pdf) you can take in Tsukihime.

It's working with primitive 2D graphics and physics, and a complete collision detection engine. We've also implemented special holes that act as tunnels between table layers, so balls can move up and down layers on a table. I'm hoping to throw in a bit of pixel shader magic to get the graphics to really spice up the presentation.

Total documentation (the part in which I am the leader) has accumulated to just over 500 pages adhering IEEE 830-1998 (SRS, Software Requirements Specification), 1016-1998 (SDD, Software Design Document), and 1058-1998 (SPMP, Software Project Management Plan) standards, and the IEEE 12207.1 software life cycle process using the agile Feature Driven Development process.

The above sentence when decoded states that I have created a project plan document itemizing financial, staffing, infrastructure, problem-solution scenarios, and scheduling elements, along with defining a standard workflow and delivery cycle and post production support plan. It also includes development specifications such as identifiable classes, modules, interfaces, UML elements such as Use Cases, Relation Diagrams, State Charts, Sequence Diagrams, Deployment Diagrams, and Pseudocode (along with pseudocode definitions) necessary to implement the collective software image defined in our software proposition log known as the High Level User Needs Statement (better known as "What the Customer Asked For, Engineering Style").

It really is a gigantic document. My project folder is about 22 MBs in size and these are just Microsoft Word and flat text files, and the aforementioned graphics. I can't imaging what this was like back when everyone was using the MIL standards, which is reported to produce documents that are six times the size of IEEE documents.

Indeed, those are the limits of paper. I just use multiple pieces of paper. It's a mess for sure, but I'm a messy person anyway.

Cool. I can't say I've enjoyed a pool videogame in a long time (real pool is so much more fun for me), but with wormholes and stuff, it could end up pretty good. =D

I'd love to see your project plans. I don't know how anyone could need five hundred pages to describe a top-down pool game. =P
I'd also love to see Miyamoto's project plans. They're probably like a page long, and along the lines of "it's about exploring. It should be fun, and there should be monsters. Make sure the music is catchy! Items will be used to defeat bosses! Make sure the Water Temple is a pain in the ass!" I'd take the one page over the five hundred. Be more concise!

In case you were wondering, my plans are scribbled on scrap paper at four in the morning when I wake up from crazy dreams, and they're usually accompanied by little doodles of cute girls or people being eaten by monsters. They're awesome.

[Coppied from my Facebook]

Yep, just my fucking luck; Was going home from playing Street Fighter IV at the city, and 2 semi-drunk black guys jumped on the Sydenham train on my carriage with 1 holding a baseball bat starting fighting with someone. Several tougher looking passesngers tried to restrain them while the rest of the carriage moved into... the other carriages or the other side of the train. Some passengers tried to talk sense into them telling them that there's kids on the train but they even tried to hit that woman. Once we had reached Middle Footscray, the guys got out but starting attacking one of the guys who was still on the carriage who was restraining them earlier, using his baseball bat and copping him once on the hand. Once the train was about to take off, he smashed the window which got glass all over me especially on my hair and my bag. They took off jumping over the fence. 30 mins later, police came (good fucking timing as we pressed the emergency intercom since Footscray) and the good samaritans were questioned and assisted. I just home 2 hour late. Go figure.

Apparently the person who was initially getting beaten on somehow knew them, and is now assisting police. The restrainers also assisting and considered heroes (in my opinion) as they braved their weapons and with that resulting in no severe injuries to anyone.

Apparently the person who was initially getting beaten on somehow knew them, and is now assisting police. The restrainers also assisting and considered heroes (in my opinion) as they braved their weapons and with that resulting in no severe injuries to anyone.

And all this could have been prevented if the police stepped in an tazed them all.

having methods inside of methods should be illegal @____@
Yeah, totally. Then we could just REWRITE BLOCKS OF CODE OVER AND OVER AGAIN FOR NO REASON INSTEAD. THAT'D BE AWESOME. AND DEFINITELY LESS CONFUSING THAN USING NESTED METHODS. I LOVE WHEN MY PROGRAMS ARE FIVE BILLION PAGES LONG. =P

Speaking of five billion pages long, program plans, M? I still want to see how the hell you managed that. I'm wondering if there's any actual merit to writing that much crap, or if you're just OCDing the shit out of that project. XD

Sounds like some kind of amateur threat or some random grudge. My guess is they probably played too much GTA, a game originally created to offer the ghetto experience to those who didn't have the luxury of being born black.

Everyday Chatter used to be a private forum (actually called "Private"), but that resulted in a bunch of emos posting fake suicide stories. We then converted the name to Everyday Chatter to make it a catch-all, but was not visible to new members. And now everything's public because there's no point to having a private forum.

Of course, there's still one private forum located on this site :shifty:

I do those regularly...then again, I often USE particular keywords to incite an amusing response I'm looking for purely for the lulz. It's sort of a guilty pleasure of mine...I get a good feeling when I successfully get the response I'm looking for XD
Yes, I like to screw around with people's (usually friends, but the level of screwing around is lighthearted.) heads during normal conversation, hahahah

I especially love it when some random creepy stranger tries to harass me or my friends in public, that's when I turn down the "light hearted" screwing around and just turn them into my toys.

Hey, physicist-fags: if a sealed glass bottle broke under pressure from being under too much water, what would it look like? Would the bottle implode from the water pushing into it, or explode from the air inside of it pushing out? Or would it kind of do both? A hundred points to anyone smart enough to know this one. =)

(Sources say nobody will guess correctly.)

It really depends upon the delta from the outside pressure and the internal pressure. I'm going to assume that the bottle is being dragged downward slowly until it's passed it's tension value.

The glass bottle will maintain it's shape until the pressure exceeds the tension of the glass bottle. Once this tension point has been reached, the bottle will begin to show signs of cracking or distortion, but no major fragmenting will happen. Once this has happened, the cracks in the bottle will either fracture or erode until it is large enough to allow water to pass through. The bottle itself will not explode, but a portion of the bottle may be found inside of itself.

The key thing about this is that the bottle is made out of glass and not a metal. This means that it is neither ductile nor malleable. Thus, when glass compresses past its limit, it will break rather than be crushed. Another thing to note is that pressure always tries to be equally distributed. Thus, if a small opening appears in a object where the pressure is far less inside than outside, the outside will flow inward through the crack to try and equal the pressure. Thus, it makes sense that a glass bottle will neither explode or implode, but rather crack and equal pressure.

Given a high enough pressure, the flow of the water may give the impression of both implosion and explosion, but this is due to density of objects and the rate of flow (ergo, an object's elasticity) and not necessarily pressure.

tl;dr - Read your own damn physics book.

Hahah, thanks M. I figured at least one of our smarter members would know the answer to my question. The answer is basically what I figured using my memories of highschool physics and common sense, so thanks for confirming it for me!

Ahahahah, I kinda came to the same conclusion as M did...just not as eloquent, informative and well-written as he was. Having never taken Physics, I don't know how to explain it other than "if it gets a crack, the pressure would equalize because there's now an opening" XD

And then I figured "explosive decompression" like in airplanes but it wouldn't be explosive...it would just basically shatter if the force is strong enough.
...Is that even correct?

Ah, but sadly, I don't believe in the translation of music between languages. If a song is created for a language, it singing should remain in that language. Take, for instance, Dragenstea Din Tei: in Romanian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGLMALvtjBc) and English (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VdT0AGrlS0) and in Thai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKVZ1tv89mU). Each have clear differences which kinda bars them from being compared.

And I have to wonder how much acid was required to produce this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLb9jPuDS9Y).

lol, I used to fucking LOVE Lightwave when I was a kid. It makes me sad that Maya and 3dsMax dominate the professional world. =(
I like Maya too, though...maybe I'll buy Lightwave again when I want a good (legal) solution to my 3d-modeling needs. =D

Edit: My God, they're on version 9.6 now. I haven't used lightwave in like eight years. ;___;
Edit Edit: Didn't I hear somewhere that (the 3D work in) FLCL (cartoons are still drawn by people, assholes) was made using Lightwave? If Gainax is using it, it's obviously doing okay...

I must have a look at this Lightwave, my nerdiness sense is tingling :shifty:

Also I'll be down in Melbourne on Thursday either around fed square or around the Hamer Hall area. Going to see a concert for my school's music program and I've got like 2 hours to kill in the city before hand and after the concert. So if anyone from Melbourne way wants to meet up in like a cafe or something I'll be up for it. I'll just have to double check tomorrow where. Hopefully I should be able to anywhere in the CBD or the area around Hamer Hall. Times will probably be like 11am or 4pm ish maybe, haven't got a lot of details yet. So yeah, if anyones up for it :D

Saw the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo today. Amazing stuff. The guitarist Slava Grigoryan was incredible as well; he's also a nice guy (he even gave me some tips XD).

Had a few problems on the way home though; some drunk guy on the way home got his foot stuck in the bus door when he tried to walk on. Bus driver said no, and somehow the guy stepped back into the door system. Made me a whole 30 minutes late. The bus driver had a fun time trying to tell him why he couldn't move either, apparently the guy thought the bus driving was repelling him from getting on the bus using supernatural forces. :\

Indeed, so do I. But they're all from the nineties, which is probably why I'm a little bitter towards Disney. Things like Beauty and the Beast and Hercules rank very high on my animation scale, but the crap they've been putting out the last ten years has been embarrassing. I don't think they even make cartoons anymore, and I'm not a fan of anything Pixar's been putting out lately, either (and besides, I don't think they really count as Disney, having started as a totally separate company, and focusing only on 3d animation). So yeah, I'd agree that a lot of Disney's back-catalog is good, but I don't like them as a company right now. They've fallen from being one of the world's top animation studios (and an American one at that! Hurrah!) to whoring out little girls like Hannah Montana to the dirty, stupid masses. I am saddened by their current state! What have you become, beloved Disney of yesteryear?! D': [/rant]

You have done well grasshopper.
*bows* I try.

And lol, I totally gave that same rant to M a few months ago...

Oh, I agree on the more recent stuff. Basically I liked it up till the point where they stopped doing 2D animation and try to be Pixar.. and failed horribly.

@M Tim Burton is (IMO) the best actor to pull of a film like this, it's the only movie I've actually been looking forward to see in the cinema. America McGee is a game designer, not a movie director. You're not gonna ask Bill Gates to write a novel either, do you?

You haven't been following McGee's recent works, have you? He's a writer and director, too, ya know.

The problem I have with Tim Burton is that he puts limits on the elements he uses. Was the Nightmare Before Christmas supposed to be scary? Semi-sorta. Did it turn out that way? No; in fact most cartoons today standardize on scarier material. But it was well received due to it's originality in it's time. Nothing like that story was ever written before. Short of this, the only success I'd give Tim is Edward Scissor Hands. All the rest of his works range from okay to complete and total failures.

Enter Alice's Tales Underground. There's thousand page books written about this children's book, and the story was prewritten. One would hope that even an inkling of this would be captured, but the project decided to go the other route and try to satisfy the masses by reimaging the story, rather than twisting or expanding it, which is what they said they were going to do in the first place. If what he produced is classified as an element in the canon of novels, then the pornographic musical Alice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_in_Wonderland_(1976_film)) should be as well (and it should not, I assure).

Now, I acknowledge that this is not his fault, as he did hire a writer to do the screenplay, but he did have the final say-so and permitted it to be published, so he has to shoulder the blame.

I found that American McGee facilitated a fantastic twist on the Alice story produced by EA. He co wrote the story (which Tim Burton contracted out on the Alice movie to the person that wrote Beauty and the Beast) and also sprouted new ideas into the story that were both cohesive and believable.

Not to mention I hate how Tim Burton seems like he's married into reusing his old actors (read: Johnny Depp) for most of his productions. It's about as bad as hearing about another movie where Morgan Freeman is a bad guy, and how Mel Gibson is another hard-ass in a punk world.

I guess the really sad part is that the new movie disappointed me. It's almost like the movie was misplaced and the story misunderstood, defaming Dodgson's original work by simply extracting the environment into some sort of action-in-fantasy flick. Even Neco z Alenky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_(1988_film)) respected the story more.

And on a completely different note, would anyone like to have some recycled Chinese (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2010-03/22/content_9619592.htm) cooking oil (http://china.globaltimes.cn/society/2010-03/514702.html)?

Well, it is a fantasia told by a person whom liked to take naked pictures of little girls to the Liddel sisters while riding on a boat. The funniest part is that it almost wasn't published because Dodgson didn't think it was good enough to be written, but he wrote it down because Alice Liddel wanted a copy, which then made it's way into the hands of a publisher.

I know the story behind it; I was forced to read it for class a few years ago. Apparently Carroll didn't like anybody besides young girls, suffering from a speech impediment around everybody besides them. And he was a mathematician? It was more interesting learning about him than reading his book, actually.

Also, I fucking HATE THE ROMAN ALPHABET. I had to try like fifty ways of spelling "mathematician" just now to get the word right. Mathematicion? Mathematition? Mathametition? ALL OF OUR LETTERS SOUND THE SAME. IT'S FUCKING STUPID.

No, it means our rules for spelling are inconsistent at best, and non-existent at worst. You just proved this with your example; why isn't mathematician spelled "mathehmateashun" if that is indeed the correct pronunciation? Why is "know" spelled as "k'nahw" and not "no?" How is "sea" supposed to be pronounced as "see" with the spelling it has? The way we spell is ridiculous, no matter how you look at it. The existence of homophones that are spelled differently are proof enough of an alphabet's/system of spelling's brokenness for me.

except for the fact that there are several different ideographs that are pronounced the same, which is Hopeless's argument.

Let's take a look at my favorite example: Koi.
こい - Koi (Hiragana spelling)
コイ - Koi (Katakana spelling)
来い - Koi (as in Enough)
恋 - Koi (as in Love)
鯉 - Koi (as in Fish)

Very clearly different, but yet pronounced the same (minus the accents, but I think I'm the only one that cares about that). Considering this, both English and Japanese have the same problem, for the opposite reasons (if that makes any sense to anyone).
