I suppose it's the thoughts of Gregory. When he established the Gregorian calendar, he aligned Christian holidays with notable pagan festivals (such as All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day). For instance, Valentines day was set to be on the same date (physically, not observed) as Lupercalia, a love and fertility festival with purification in pre-Roman years. This purification ceremony is what set the date for valentine's day. As for the symbolism, we have to look more at what happened on that day.

The two overlap one another in Genesis 10:9 (Baul -> "The Great Hunter"). The concept of exchanging hearts was pulled from Babylonian texts meaning "Bal", which looks close to a heart. As for the exchanging of messages, I'd assume it was to illustrate how the Italians passed messages to explain that Baul was in the vicinity before he was killed for violating the laws. Christians came to honor the soul of the sinner, thus granted him the title of Valentine.

Valentine's Day is one such example of Roman Mythology that screens itself over the martyr of Valentine of Terni and Valentine of Rome, where the Romans specified what is now Febuary 14th's evening to honor Lupercus's (also known as Faunus, Pan, and Baul; the warder of wolfs, and god that looked to Fauna) mother's, Semiramis, purification from her son's violation of law.

Vision of Escaflowne was a lot more constructed in the anime, but it was kinda bland, especially since Hitomi gained the power of dousing and absolute tarot readings. They also formed a love triangle between Allen, Vahn, and Hitomi, which slowly becomes annoying near the middle.

Still the anime is unique for a "girl thrown into a different world and gained powers" scenario.

Hitomi is just annoying (not to mention probably the least attractive looking character in any anime).

Other than that Escaflowne aka Big Noses Inc. is pretty good.

A Perfect Life


He had a picture perfect life. He was married, he had children, he had a lovely family in a nice house. There was a white picket fence. There was a dog. There was everything he needed and desired. Every day was perfect for him. He got a raise the day he asked for it at work, he got a promotion too.

But there was something very wrong. He couldn't shake the feeling his life was too perfect. He woke up every day and looked at his beautiful wife. She seemed to get more beautiful everyday. Maybe she did. He walked downstairs and ate breakfast with his children. They were the sort of children he always wanted, the kind of children that never caused trouble. His boy was the star of his baseball team, his girl got perfect grades in school and played the piano with skill and grace.

He soon became sure that something was very very wrong with his life. He went to bed that night feeling uncertain. When he woke up he looked at his wife. Somehow she didn't look as pretty as he remembered. Her hair had darkened, her eyes were a dark blue instead of that piercing blue he loved so much. Her skin was worn and wrinkled. He gasped in surprise.

"Is something wrong dear?" She asked. Her voice was raspy. Her expression wasn't curious or worried, but....it was angry.

He shook his head and stumbled down stairs. His eyes widened when he saw his children. Their clothes were ragged and stained, their faces grey and shrunken.

"Hi Daddy!" they cried out. He said nothing. He wanted to vomit. He stumbled out the door and gasped in horror at what he saw. Everything was dead. The grass was dead. The homes had the paint peeling off the walls. There were no cars except his own. There was nothing.

He got in his car and drove to the place where he worked. He felt, for whatever reason, that he had to "play along" and that maybe if he pretended everything was normal that life would return to the way it was. Maybe it was a dream.

He entered his office building. It was tattered, lit by dim lightbulbs hanging off of the moldy series. His coworkers were hideous. Not even human. Their eyes were now a menacing red, staring at him with big fake smiles that revealed rows of fangs. He sat down at his desk and began typing away at a computer that didn't work. His boss came in. He didn't want to look.

"Very good work you've been doing lately" The boss' voice became a growl, something inhuman and dark. He couldn't speak. He managed to stammer out an answer.

"why th-th-thank you, sir..." he stammered. Shit. He knew he wasn't acting the same. The Boss put a hand on his shoulder. His touch was cold as ice.

"Are you alright?" The Boss asked. Again, his voice wasn't worried. His voice was angry, menacing, overflowing with ill intent.

"No, I'm not!" He smacked his Boss' hand away and ran for the door. Two of his coworkers blocked it. This had to be a dream. It couldn't be real. They tackled him to the floor and one of them pulled a syringe out of his pocket. Their faces were a pale blue, their skin pulled tight against their skulls like rubber.

"Why!? Why?! What is this world?!" He screamed.

His Boss stood over him as the others pinned him down.

"You're the only one left. You're the only one left alive. We need you to feed. To survive. We can't let you die, we can't let you run." The Boss seemed almost sad at this point. "Don't worry about it. Everything will be as happy as can be."

The needle plunged into his arm and everything faded to black.

He woke up the next morning next to his wife. She was so beautiful. Her long blonde hair always shimmered against the sunlight. "Honey, weren't you going to donate blood today?" She asked him, staring into his eyes. She was so gorgeous.

"I get the feeling I've done that already..." He said.

"No, I don't think you have" She said quite seriously. He trusted his wife, of course. He walked down the stairs to be greeted by his beautiful children. His son had just won MVP for his little league! How wonderful his life was. He drove down to the hospital to donate blood before heading to work. He couldn't help but smile at how grateful the doctor was for his donation.

Maybe he'll ask for another raise.

But anyway, apparently the cartilage had been slowly torn over the years as a result of many sporting and strenuous activities. So it just, got to the point where it couldn't on any longer and "snap! tear! grind!" All I did was sit down in my chair but apparently that was enough to finally tear it up.

Also the grating noise it made when the doctor was moving it...............it sounded so, chilling and evil. Thank goodness for morphine :heh:

reminds me of one of my friends who forever has to have a leg brace or strap contraption on her leg from a cartilage-tearing accident due to simply twisting her leg on a funny position and tearing most of it off... and it was quite severe

As for Railgun, I got to like episode sixteen, and then kind of just stopped watching it. Every episode I watched, I kept on thinking "this show's gonna get better for sure!" but it never really picked up for me. I'm sure I'll finish it some time, because it is pretty good, but it's on the back burner for me as of right now. I'd definitely recommend watching Sora first, in any case.

Edit: Also, lately whenever I lock my computer, random programs will stop responding and shut themselves down when I unlock the computer again. They're all programs that reside on the little dock thing on the start bar and just sort of chill out in the background usually, like MSN messenger, Steam, and Window's automatic update thingermajigger. I liked all the characters, but didn't really love any of them. The art and music were good, as were basically all other facets of the show. It's just that nothing really stood out in it for me; it felt kind of hollow, like the people making the show were making it just because it was their job, and didn't really love their product. Dunno, just couldn't get into it.

They're all programs that reside on the little dock thing on the start bar and just sort of chill out in the background usually, like MSN messenger, Steam, and Window's automatic update thingermajigger. Any idea why? It's kind of weird...

Two things. Either your logon/logoff settings are wrong (you tell your system to shut down these things on logoff.) or you're running too many programs/background processes at the same time. (This leads to a "traffic jam" inside your computer, which can cause erratic program behaviour.) Other than that, it might a registry issue or a memory problem, something which you shouldn't be tweaking around with unless you know what you're doing.

There's the tricky part about this new wave of bots. They really do act like normal users. It's hard to identify and segregate them from new members. Most times, they have sentence fragments in their signatures. Othertimes, they pull posts from other users on the same forum. Even odder, they pull direct quotes from other forums or websites.

I have to admit, whoever wrote the rumer script to do this paid quite a bit of attention to the humanistic side of it's agent.

Days ago I asked a bot if is a bot. The bot answered me back "what is a bot?" lol Each time the "bot" word is mentioned the bot reply that question.

1. 4chan isn't a reliable source, which is where the most recent AIM hacking story came from. The real story is that AOL's doing work on their authentication server, which will obviously have some effect on users. I actually like the original keys. Usually I change them all around, but I find them really easy to use. c spells, space use, e jump, it's all too easy.

Who remembers the Persona games?

This song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI6Ee5VNf4A) got me back into Persona 4, JUST so I can find where in the game this song is.

I've been playing the Persona games since the beginning, and I was stoked when P3 came out, it was like reliving my childhood again :3

That song isn't in the game, it's just an extra add-on, like Persona 3's Blues in the Velvet Room.
