Geek:–noun Slang.
1. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

2. a peculiar or offensive person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.

But in this case...

3. an expert in computers (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)

:shifty: Just your average Otaku anime fan. It's not really all that much. I've just watched a hell of a lot (round about 300 different series). I do know that I passed the 1 TB phase (whoo~ In the top 500 of the entire internet! But I still want to know just how permidion has 6.7 TBs worth of anime....). Now to reach 2 TBs, so I can get in the top 150!

And with that, I must meet with Irene. Goodnight everyone.

Dont by the HDDs from Wal-mart, you get the good ones for less online.

Newegg's Product (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822135106)

And the same thing basically except it is EIDE instead of SATA3.0...

Wal-Mart's Product (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4898003)

@M Everyone needs a TB of HDD space. That way you never have to worry about room, unless your profession requires that much space. In that case why didn't you buy another 2 or 3 TBs?

Luis

First off <_<..... It's Geek.

Second off, when installing SuSE, do NOT do an update with the first install. YAST installer of SuSE 10.1 has a huge glitch in it and breaks your ability to update software (via breaking your dependency index). Just keep it in the out-of-box version, install, and then do all the updating after you've booted to your choice GUI, or console.

I'd rather be a nerd since nerd means over-average smart person.

Anyway, I tried installing Linux (had the CD's lying around) and it keeps being weird. Bleh x_x stupid CD's must be busted or something.

A problem that I have with Suse is that it fills my system with junk I don't need. Suse installs 2.5+ GB and I'm sure a lot of that stuff I either don't want or I don't need (or usually both of those). I want OS + GUI + Japanese support and that's it. I don't want all the extra shit, I'll install it when I need it. Boo :(

maybe give something more customizable a go? Like Arch or Gentoo?

Question: since gentoo is complied (as far as I know) (Compiled...IDK what it is but takes a crapload of time depending on your rig) if you were to compile gentoo for your laptop could you save that and then just directly install (like windows) or would you have to recompile everything?

Neko Koneko

Suse is very customizable, but since it has so many packages I just don't really know what's really needed and what's not.

I hate when people mix up geek and nerd. There is a diffrence. Geek is technology associated, like games and computer stuff, and nerds are "OMG! GRADES GRADES! SCHOOL! BOOK!!!!!! die"

Similarly Correct, but missing some details.

Geek - a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked

or

Geek - an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity.

Both fuse together and form the stereotype "Geek".

As for Nerd,

Nerd - an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person, Especially one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits.

In lamer terms, Geeks are smart people who go goo-goo over technology, and Nerds are secluded people who devote their time to learning something or studying something.

I, for one am both a Geek and a Nerd. Yes I am a very sad individual.

Okay.

@Angelic: You can pick and choose your packages you want to install. Just go to the bottom of yast and click on configure > installation when it prompts you on your installation settings. From there you can get a list of all avalible packages by catagory (comes after you partition your drive). Deselect every package. Then you can go through them all individually by their description. When you click the next button it should automatically prompt you on all the dependent packages, and make your install 100% of what you want it to be. I recommend you select the bare install (without gui) option and then go through the list; pick and choose. Whatever you do, you must install all C++, java, Perl/Python libs. If you don't you won't be able to compile an installation from a source tarball. While there are nice Binary packages by form of RPM, it is better to build them from scratch on your own machine (for obvious reasons).

@Siul1313: What exactly do you mean "compiled"? Do you mean build a personal distro? Or do you mean build a Page file for automated installation?

Im not real sure how it works, all I know is that people compile stuff during install so it runs faster, my question is that lets say Im good with linux right...and I have an old P3 rig I wanna use as a server. So i get gentoo so I can sqeeze the performance outta the thing, for that I have to compile stuff right?

So the compiling takes 6 days...if that thing were to crash/explode decide to mess with me. Is there some sort of "backup" I can make so that I dont have to do 6days worth of compiling again?

Ugg now I feel like an idiot.:bleh:

M

Pro'lly something insulting to Fai.

Ah. I just wanted to make sure you wanted the technical side before I wrote it all out.

And I'll be nice and give you a bit of background on Linux install formats.

Linux has two main ways to install files. One is similar to the windows EXE file called binaries. The other is where you "compile" the install from "source". Binaries are out of the box pre-configured to be supported by most linux systems (not all), regardless of hardware or other software (but not dependent programs!).

For source files it's a little different and more complex than the above. When we say "compile" a program, it literally means taking the source code of a program (a text document with logic instructions on how to do something) and build it according to how your system is. These installs work on any Linux system you have, so long as you fulfill the dependencies for the program.

Now to explain what Siul was talking about. By compiling a source install on your computer, you are omiting some of the useless "universal configuration" lines found in a binary package. Thus, you have a smaller, more specifically designed program for your system; and only your system. On average you'll get a 30-40% system preformance boost from the program by doing this, but you sacrifice a great amount of time from compiliation (for instance, installing mplayer from a binary install takes somewhere around 1-4 mins. To do this from source takes about 12 min to 60 mins).

And to answer your second question (the one about if your computer goes kapuit during the compiling) you'll result in a broken install. In all technicality, you COULD resume your install, but you'd have to remember right where your computer crashed, and figure out just how TO resume the install. Quite honestly, I have no clue how to resume an install. I know that you could possibly select "update" from your installer, but, once again, you'd be updating a broken install.

It's up to you.

Like imagine the whole compiling process the begining of a game...the tutorial level.

I want to save my game after the hour long video and tutorial level...cause theres a thunderstorm and theres bound to be power spikes that will make my console go off (That represents my system crash) so that nextime I turn on my computer and load the save?

Save being the OS.

For some reason he carries around a kendo stick, yeah.

@sui: OS-es aren't games though. I believe you can interrupt compiling processes (I did it once while compiling a kernel) but I don't know what would happen if you did it during the install of the OS itself. Depends on the gentoo installer I guess.

On another note, I hacked M

Ubuntu and Kubuntu are best for beginners. And you can run dualboot in which you can choose between windows and linux at boot. Also, Ubuntu and Kubuntu come as live DVD's, which means you start the whole thing from DVD and can work with it before actually installing it (although live DVD's are really slow).

Either that or I feel that way, but from what I've done this past two weeks it is proven infront of me and I still don't know how to act or be myself in the root of society. I understand concepts, but not the theory.

Is there a way where I can learn all of this?

"I'm typing an essay on "Fruits Basket" (still embarrased about watching it it was just reccomended to me thats all). I haven't told my teacher that its an anime and that there isnt a book to write an essay on. Its my secret...

I pray he doesn't know about manga... or even worse... use ichigos!!!!!

When he sees names like "Honda Touru" or "Souma Yuki" or "Souma Kyo" he might wonder what it is though, and ask if he can see the book.

Jaso

my greatest fear. I plan in case he asks that it was a freinds book and I dont think I can get it again and... that I recommend he watch an interpretation of the book (to us: anime) or even a closely related graphic novel?

EDIT: you have watched it?

M
August 29th, 2006, 07:15 pm
First off, why would you cheat the school system like that? Reading isn't all that bad. Second off, most teachers at 9-12 grade schools know a heck of a lot of literature. If they arn't too sure on the report they'll do a google search on the book and see if it is published by a "book" company. Third, that'd be a bad trick to do to your teacher. They already know you've lied once, to lie again is to douse any flame of hope you have left from the report.

The M solution: Read of Mice and Men or some other easy essay book.

Jaso
August 29th, 2006, 07:19 pm
wow. would you beleive that is the book I am currently reading in class? What a coincidence! umm... he already knows I previously cheated? Explain please. and cheat? well... I kind of forgot I had the homework essay untill two days ago: this is a last ditch resort. Just finished!

M
August 29th, 2006, 07:24 pm
(It's a very common book)

You've cheated the system. Meaning you work around the rules of what you were suppost to do and formed a different interperation of the rules. They asked for a book report. You give them a report on an anime. This is what I mean by cheat.

And for the teacher to know you've already cheated: I say this because the teacher already has doubts from not finding a book publisher. By suggesting he look into an anime for an interpretation of it, is just going to ruin his respect for you and not allow you to re write the paper.

Then again, s/he (the teacher) may be an idiot... I know that searching the publisher is the first thing I would do on a book. It's quick, it's easy, and it's usually decisive.

(and my spelling still sucks).

Jaso

You said you're reading of mice and men? Just ass a report off of what you've read and use sparknotes for the information you don't know. It'll take about 30 mins for three pages in manuscript format.

Jaso
August 29th, 2006, 07:44 pm
no we are doing an essay at the end of this unit :\

M
August 29th, 2006, 07:46 pm
Er--an essay is usually three pages long and consist of five paragraphs, three containing point-based material and the other two being an introduction and a conclusion...

EDIT: By manuscript format, I mean you double space, size 12 monospaced font (to be more precise, a font that produces 10 characters per every inch), triple space from your header on the first page, and 1" margins. If you were to type it in standard format, it'd be around 2.5 pages in MLA. Example (http://www.shunn.net/format/story.html)

I think the Catcher in the Rye is quite a good book.

Jaso
August 29th, 2006, 08:12 pm
never heard. quick summary?

Neko Koneko
August 29th, 2006, 08:15 pm
The Catcher in the Rye is the story of teenager Holden Caulfield's turbulent last few days before his Christmas vacation. During these days, Holden leaves Pencey Prep, a boys' school he's been kicked out of, and takes off for a few nights alone in New York City. Holden tells the story as a monologue, from some sort of a mental facility where he's recovering from the stress of the experiences he retells.

Holden's tale begins at Pencey, which he despises for its prevailing "phoniness." Holden finds a lot of people and attitudes unbearably phony. It's the day of the big Pencey football game, something that Holden has little interest in. In lieu of watching, Holden takes a walk to the house of his history teacher, old Mr. Spencer. This isn't a particularly satisfying visit, nor is his last evening at Pencey, during which he hangs around with a coarse and dull guy named Ackley and later gets beat up by his own roommate, a ladies' man named Stradlater. The idea of Stradlater taking one of Holden's old friends, Jane Gallagher, out on a date, and the thought of suave Stradlater making the moves on his innocent friend drives Holden to his fists. After the fight, Holden decides to get up and leave Pencey immediately. He finishes packing and leaves campus in the middle of the night.

A train takes Holden to New York City, where his family has lived all his life. Here, he checks into the derelict Edmont Hotel, a place that provides him with several adventures including an evening dancing with three dull tourist girls and a clumsy encounter with a prostitute. Holden sends the prostitute away without services rendered, and although he pays her for her time, it's apparently not enough. For this, Holden gets his second pummeling in as many nights, at the hands of Maurice, the hotel's elevator man/pimp.

Holden spends a total of two days in the city, and these days are largely characterized by drunkenness and loneliness. He meets up with an old acquaintance named Carl Luce and has a date with an off-and-on girlfriend, Sally Hayes, but both experiences leave him more miserable than before. Finally, Holden sneaks into his parents' apartment to visit his kid sister Phoebe, who's about the only person he seems to be able to communicate with. After this, Holden feels a little better, and he heads off to the apartment of his ex-English teacher, Mr. Antolini. The comfort Holden hopes to find there is upset when he wakes up in the middle of the night to find Mr. Antolini petting his head in a way that seems "perverty."

After this, Holden gets awfully depressed. His distress with the phoniness and stupidity of the world focuses as he spends his last afternoon wandering around the city. What bothers him most is that the world seems to have no sanctuary from the phony or perverse in it anymore--it's a cruel place to grow up. This becomes all the more real for Holden as he wanders around his little sister's school building and keeps finding swear words scribbled on the walls. Holden begins to envision himself as a guardian of children, someone who will protect their innocence. This hope is crystallized in a vision of himself as the catcher in the rye--a sort of guard at the edges of a field where children can run free and play, a guardian who can keep these kids from falling, in their exuberance, over the field's edges.

Though Holden tells his little sister he's going to move out West, this doesn't pan out. Instead, after a little fight with Phoebe, Holden ends up accompanying her to the park and watching as she rides the merry-go-round, stretching from her wooden horse to reach a prized brass ring. As he watches with a combination of fear and joy, Holden seems to have decided that there can be no catcher, that all you can do is hope kids develop in the harsh world on their own.

Holden never does give a thorough assessment of his prognosis since his hospitalization. But if his voice in the novel's last few pages is any indication, his time recovering has left him calmer and with more perspective, but still lonely and without direction.

Oooh, Catcher in the Rye, I just finished reading that - you wouldn't think you'd really care about the opinions and reflections of a high school dropout but when you delve into his mental processes like that it makes you realise that he's not a fundamentally bad kid and you end up being really interested in his observations on everything, occasionally though they might be crude. Bah, I can't describe my thoughts properly, but I would definitely recommend reading it.

It's a tie between Lolita - by Nabokov (http://www.mochola.org/nabokov/lolita.htm) (on the lower right hand side is a download link for Word), and Ulysses - by Joyce (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/4300) (both were banned from the US at one time). They are the most fluent, poetic, and utterly fantasic examples of exactly what Literature should be and how a writer should go about their job.

Then again, the run-ons Nabokov and Joyce produce just keep on going! Nothing like half-page sentences.

(feel free to take down download links)

EDIT: And for some odd reason, I thought we were on the topic of your favorate books.

Edit the spacing properties?
Or shrink the margins a little bit? (make sure to do it evenly)

Neko Koneko
August 29th, 2006, 11:35 pm
The only things I can think of is making the font smaller, removing enters or change the margins for the paper so that there will be less white between the edges of the paper and your text

M
August 29th, 2006, 11:41 pm
Or use a different font, though not many teachers like that (a narrow font like Onyx). Columns is also another option. You can typically fit 1.25 pages on a two column article. But that's basically it. Margins is your best bet.

EDIT: I'm on fire for stupidity today...

Lol, thats the most stupid thing Ive heard all year.

People act like they know whats happening around the world, but obviously many dont. Lets use you as an example.

THE GASSING OF PEOPLE IN IRAQ IS WELL DOCUMENTED AND IS PROVEN TO BE REAL. Dont be an idiot about somthing that millions know to be true. There are people who say it happened, and there are those who were in the market of the major city when it was gassed to test if the gas worked.

Weapons of mass distructiosn do not mean Nukes and Nukes only. Bio weapons, the ones Sadam used, are also concidered of mass distruction.

And the reason why Bush went all wacko over Sadam because of other weapons hes hiding is because when the UN constantly asked him to give them papers with the listing of where all the weapons he has were, they were incomplete or wrong.

AND, he had the equiptment to make Nukes. You dont have those kind of things just to have them and be happy, you have them to make weapons. There was also no trances or even ideas of making a Nuke-power plant, so the obvious is what im stating.

Please learn the facts before you go all stupid on me agian Just go to MSNBC or BBC's site and read up on stuff.

Lol

Your a funny child, you know that? It seems like you believe people who like to doctor interveiws and cut out segments in movies to prove his point (see Fahrenheit 9/11), yet you dont watch the news.

Do you watch the news? Mind you, not local. Any american news station is bias. BBC is the best because they are out of country.

Kerry couldnt have done anything because the actions of 9/11 were sprung up because of actions Clinton did. Saddly Kerry doesnt have time travel powers. Weither Kerry was president the war in Israel would still happen because what is happening there has nothing to do with america.

The "war", or more like relief actions because it has nothing that defines it as a war, in Iraq probably wouldnt happen but if it didnt Iraq would have been at a Civil War at the momment (if you didnt know, a few months ago Iraq was very close to civil war, but support troops from all over the world put a stop to that).

ALSO: Sadam would still be gassing his country. And possable near by countries because he gassed the mountian dwellers which reside on/near the borders.

*sigh*

Rocky Anderson is one of the only ones who stands up for what he believes in.
I hate bush.
If Kerry was president on 9/11, it wouldn't have happened. Go watch Fahrenheit 9/11, or watch loose Change Second Edition and come tell me you dont want to think about it, oh one more thing curious other ppl Rocky Anderson Speech watch that
