Depends on mass, environment, and if you're hopelessly in love with a girl who references them in order to feel close to you through childhood memories.

But it doesn't matter how many words, cause it won't make you even a centimeter closer.

Gotank
October 25th, 2008, 10:52 pm
Well, there are actually 2 dots in that character, one at the top and one below the two trees (it's somewhat difficult to see in that image), which is what I'm guessing people getting 20 instead of 21 are forgetting. You can see the character more clearly in M's sig.

October 25th, 2008, 11:14 pm
Ahh, the people who said 21 write (in the kanji "oni") the vertical line that goes from the top of the box down to the right hooking upwards as two strokes - one in the box, and one as the bottom part.

I write it as one stroke. Not sure which one is correct anymore. Maybe it's something I did to save one stroke here and there.

Gotank
October 25th, 2008, 11:27 pm
No, no, I think I was counting that vertical like as one stroke. The top and right side of that box in the middle is written in 1 stroke as well. Bleh, maybe I just suck at counting =p

M
October 25th, 2008, 11:45 pm
What started confusing me is the Moku (tree -- below the radical) and the Ju (ten -- inside the mouth kanji beneath the two tree) kanji appears. For reasons beyond my understanding, it is sometimes Moku counted as 4 and others as 3, and Ju counted as 1 or 2. Also, I don't understand when you're supposed to count a dot as a stroke. The radical for it could be counted as 2 or 3 in my mind.

Oh well. One does not learn a writing system in 8 months.

I thought the last time I asked, you didn't even know any Japanese. Why are you learning kanji? Did you start taking a language course? =D

M

I'm about as good as a second grader in recognizing of words written in kanji (though I have no confidence in saying that), about as good as a 4-5 year old in grammar, and I can listen to someone speak it and understand what they're talking about, but not fully comprehend what it is that they're saying. I know a bit of Japanese, but not enough to say that I know it; albeit anime-centric Japanese which when you start studying Japanese you quickly learn that Anime words/phrases amounts to shit.

And I've been independently studying and learning Japanese since I got out of high-school off and on (2.5 or so years). It was only recently that I've started to really pursue progress in studying it.

i got my count from character dictionary. yeah i suppose its that stupid vertical hook(...)

*M: you sure you're not confusing with sui when you see it count as 3? 水 木 sometimes can be confusing, on a casual inspection. and I've never seen ju count as 1 stroke.

I drew a cute little anime cat girl with my markers today. It was really fun. I just started sketching (copying from some other drawing I found on...danbooru) and then finished it up. I'd post it, but its on line paper and it's really messy and I copied somebody else's character for it. The markers look nice, though. I think I'm gonna end up buying more colors, now.

Coincidentally, I really need to get that done now. I want to ask my best friend's father for programming advice (as he's a professional programmer), but I need to get some concept art done, so when I ask him for help, I don't look like a hopeless moron. "At least I can draw, right? Look at the game art!"

I was actually planning on drawing the girl and some other characters today after I finished up some programming stuff, but the programming ended up going overtime and I'm still not finished with it, hahah. At least today I can truthfully say to myself that I ran out of time because the day was too short, and not because I procrastinated. There's always tomorrow! I'm actually excited to work right now; XNA 3.0 is coming out in a few days, and then Community Games is launching three weeks later. There's a 99% chance I won't have a game ready for launch, but I'll still try anyway! =D

I'm actually still programming, until one in the morning or so, and then I have to go to bed because of work tomorrow. I'm trying to debug my program, but I have no idea how. Posting in the Coding thread so someone can save me, lol.
*nudge nudge, wink wink*

XD

Well, actually, I'm going to study this for a few more hours by myself. If I still don't have any idea what's wrong, I'll post tomorrow after work...I think this is a lack of programming knowledge rather than a lack of common sense, though, as my program isn't very long, and I think this should be easy to fix...I don't know how to manage my threads properly, and that problem is manifesting itself as a bunch of random and strange bugs that are hard to reproduce...I'm going to have to take out a notebook and log every problem I run into, along with what exactly I did to make the bug surface. It's like a puzzle! Wheeee~

And my program is so simple, hahah! How embarrassing. X3

Edit: Yeah, reading this now:
http://www.albahari.com/threading/part2.aspx
The section on multithreading in the C# book I read was like five pages long, so it obviously wasn't enough. Hopefully this proves helpful...

oh wait you're not ryu? who cares spam →↓↘ P or K or whatever. key is to spam quick attacks and force ur n00b opponent into a corner while he weeps and cries. if he knows how to roll past and violate your wide open behind, then it doesn't matter how much advice we give you, you're done for.

Such a noob game..
That seems to be all my opponent does. I doubt he knows how to roll. How do you roll? X3

The tags for GC should say something like "Delicious" or "Korn" or "Touhou" whatever has been mentioned the most.

depends on "which" SFII you're on about, ~_~
if it has roll move, then it's going to be all three punch keys at once.
otherwise no there isn't roll action in it. which just means you cower in the corner and wait for your friend to jump then stick some form of i-am-invincible-style-rising-dragon attack. and spam low tackle. spam it like your email inbox.

Well, I tagged it as "chat" and "general," if that makes you feel any better. =D
If it does, perhaps you could explain this retardedness to me:

I have two buttons on a windows form. If I press the first button, it disables the second button (grays it out and everything), has the thread sleep for five seconds, and then re-enables the second button.

Now, in the second button's click event, I have "if(enabled)[change a form label]."
If I click on it when the button's enabled, the label is changed, predictably. If I click on the button when it's grayed out, the button waits five seconds while the thread sleeps, and then goes ahead and changes the label after it's re-enabled. It's basically saving my click event while it sleeps, and then applying it when it wakes up. What the fuck is up with that?

More problems, I swear to God. You'd think disabling a button would disable it. X3
Of course, this is happening in my ridiculously broken multithread program...I'm going to start a fresh form program and see if it does it there, too...

Edit: Alright, I just started a fresh program, and it still does it. So I decided to change the first button's click event so that instead of making the thread sleep, it would simply be "button2.Enabled = !button2.Enabled;" instead. With that set up, the second button wouldn't "save" its click event; it works the way you'd expect. I really don't understand multithreading. I'm assuming that the Form program is using more than one thread, then. Maybe some kind of mysterious manager thread along with a separate thread for each form? I really don't understand multithreading.

Also, is there a way to tell if an object exists on a heap?
Say I do something like this:

MyObject myObject = new myObject();
myObject = null;
GC.Collect();

After the second line, I can no longer refer to MyObject's instance through it's reference, since I set that reference to null, but another part of my program needs to know whether or not that instance is still alive before it can continue. Is there a way for me to find out whether or not an object has been killed by garbage collection? It doesn't seem like I should need to know that, but for some reason, my program seems to depend on it. At least according to my debugger output window. If I do certain things while I have more than one instance of a certain object alive, the program screws up...but if I do those same things after my debugger window WriteLine()'s me "In MyObject's Dispose Method!", then the program runs fine. Do objects have a "I'm being killed!" event? *runs to check*
*puts this post in spoiler tags because it doesn't need to be here. Also putting it in the coding thread, where it belongs. Feel free to erase this one!*

Most likely the button's features have been passed by value rather than reference. That, or you have a reinitialization of the button somewhere in the works AFTER the thread's termination. Honestly, it could be one of a thousand possibilities but those two are the most common errors.

I'd recommend you short circuit the program, write some verbose debug lines, or use a stepped debugger (MSD (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/sc65sadd.aspx) or gdb (http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/)) to sort though the program.

Whoa, the first one actually sounds like it could be the problem, but how would that work exactly? This is the full source right here:

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Data;
using System.Drawing;
using System.Text;
using System.Windows.Forms;
using System.Threading;

namespace WindowsApplication1
{
public partial class Form1 : Form
{
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
}

private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
button2.Enabled = false;
Thread.Sleep(5000);
button2.Enabled = true;
}

private void button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
label1.Text = "FUCK!";
}
}
}
Maybe .NET is queuing my button presses for me while the thread is sleeping and then moving onto the next line (enabling the button), and then moving onto the next thing I told it to do, which was fire off Button2's click event? Maybe while the thread button2 is on is blocked, .Net figures it's best to save all its click events so that they aren't lost, in case the thread blockage was unintentional? That seems to be what's happening to me...if I'm wrong, and it actually is the value/reference thing, then please tell me, because I'm not seeing it, actually...but I'm a bad programmer, and I'm really tired.

Also, thanks for the debuggers. I'm gonna check em out. The one built into VS is pretty useless in this situation, so maybe the other one's are better...
Edit: Oh wait, I think I'm already using MSD. I need to learn to use it better/improve my programming senses. X3
Edit edit: Yup, just tried wasting time in Button1's click event with a while loop too, and the same problem happened. It looks like events are queued up or something. Blah.

Electronic Arts apparently has a new policy wherein acting badly in their support forums will get you banned not just from the forums but from all your EA games as well.

I get a little tired of bashing EA, to be quite honest about it, but it's hard not to do when the company appears to have rewritten its mission statement to include alienating and angering everyone and everything it sees. The latest kerfuffle revolves around a post in EA's support forum for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, in which C&C Community Manager "EA Apoc" states that changes in EA's forum policy mean users who get banned from the forums will also be unable to access their single player games.

"Your forum account will be directly tied to your Master EA Account, so if we ban you on the forums, you would be banned from the game as well since the login process is the same," he wrote. "And you'd actually be banned from your other EA games as well since it's all tied to your account. So if you have Spore and Red Alert 3 and you get yourself banned on our forums or in-game, well, your Spore account would be banned to. It's all one in the same, so I strongly recommend people play nice and act mature."

"Those banned will stay banned, but like most other internet services, its not that hard to create a new fake e-mail account," he added. "However, its a lot harder to get a new serial key."

As Kotaku points out, neither the Forums Help page nor EA's Terms of Usage say anything about what constitutes a ban-worth offense, although the Forums front page says, "We ask all members of the community to respect each other and each other's opinion. These message boards should be considered 'E' for Everyone and the moderators will close any posts that break the EA Terms of Service. Further violation of the EA Terms of Service will result in a banning of the offending account."

Some forum users are questioning the legality of such a policy, while others seem resigned to the fate to which EULA fine print has them consigned. There's also a possibility that this isn't an EA policy at all, but instead just a forum moderator who's wandered off the ranch a bit. We've contacted EA regarding this policy and are waiting, not particularly hopefully, for a response.

lol, wut?

EA already announced that information was false, so you have nothing to be worried about. They're not disallowing people to play the games they bought because they acted up on some forum. They're not that crazy. The EA employee who announced that already came out and apologized for it, admitting that he was, in fact, mistaken.

its EA. I'm so damned surprised that it took them this long to do it.

and RA3 sucks. like all EA games. fuck.
EA actually puts out some pretty high-scoring games. I'm playing Dead Space right now, and it's pretty damned good. =D
Haven't played RE3 yet, though. It'd be a shame if they ruined such a good, old franchise. I used to love C&C when I was a kid. I'm not even going to bother with RE3 though, as I know it won't be as good as the old ones. I'm just looking forward to the next StarCraft instead.

And teehee, the people on the XNA forums are bitching because they all lost the Dream Build Play competition to some decently strong development house that already has like twenty games under its belt. "We thought this was supposed to be a homebrew competition!" Too bad it wasn't, lol.

He brings out weird strategies I haven't seen yet, and I learn second hand from the book he's reading. So I take that back. He'll probably be a good match for me soon enough. Heh, go's so fun! Would the solution be to simply create a two eyed group in your corner, and then fill up the board with your white stones, keeping all of your stones connected? Then black's one-stone advantage at the center wouldn't allow it to capture you, and you'd win by komi? If you both have the same amount of territory (or close to the same?) and no captures, I guess that makes sense to me. But that sounds like too easy a solution, so I'm probably missing something.

And if anyone wants to play me, just drop me a PM. I really, really, really suck, but we might be able to have some fun, anyway. I'd appreciate an opponent good enough to teach me good habits, at least.

I don't know how many 2dans we have around here, but I wish they'd all come out and teach me some Go.
Go is too simple for me to wrap my head around.

And you'd better watch out, Gekkeiju. As the only Go player I know of on this board, you're my new rival. Which means you'd better be prepared to taste bitter defeat, as soon as I can consistently pass 20kyu problems! XD

And I just realized why my life is boring right now - I have no rivals to compete with! I used to have art rivals back in highschool, but they've fallen far behind me, which is amazing, considering how slowly I'm improving. I wish I was better at piano, because I have a few friends who would make good piano rivals, if they weren't so far ahead of me. My uncle would make a good Go rival, if he'd improve a bit.

So many potential rivals running around, so few actually on the same level as me! Damnit!

Haha... I mean I know the core rules of Go (most of them anyways), but I'm clueless about what's standard strategy, etc... Don't quote me on this, but aren't there fairly good Go playing programs out there as well? Then again... maybe not, considering how many possible moves are available to the players on each turn...
Your second guess is correct. Go computers are horrible compared to good players. I forget what constitutes a "good" player, though. I remember that even the best go computers weren't in the dan range, but I forget how high up in the kyu range they are. Considering that I'm probably a 20kyu at best, chances are a good go computer could beat me, I guess. But it probably wouldn't play like a human, and I'd probably learn bad habits from it, since decent players can wipe the floor with go computers.

I'm challenging my old highschool friends to be my rivals again. I hope they accept. XD

Writing a program that plays Go well is harder than you might think. Even programming a computer to make legal moves is not trivial. Whereas there are Chess programs that can challenge the world Chess champion, the best available Go program can be beaten very easily by anyone with an amateur dan grade. For years, if you succeeded in writing a Go-playing program than could beat a novice professional, you could win a prize worth over US $1,000,000. Nobody did this before the prize expired in 2000. Of course the commercial value of such a program would be at least that.

I'm a first dan amateur. my dad's fifth dan amateur

either of us beat any go games by a mile giving computer 9 stones to start with.

go just has way too many possibilities compared with chess, making it bloody impossible to write a challenging game

chess games just grab data from games played by GM's all over the world, then pick "the best move" gathered from all of it. and so in the ocasion the ultimate chess game still loses to a n00b because he makes the most random moves.

Go proverb: "Beginners play atari."
Oh snap! I need to pay attention to that one too, actually. One of my biggest problems is that I try too hard to save little groups, and sometimes end up giving up a dango daikazoku because of it. Because I'll just blindly attack the closest enemy stones, instead of thinking through a better escape plan. Nagisa would probably lose Go games constantly. D:

Well, although it is true that high powered chess engines often store preset games, they rarely match the whole game to historical games. Most chess programs will use standard openings to save resources, since they're already well-established. And once they reach endgame, certain endgame 'tablebases' exist that have calculated sure-win/draw sequences move for move for certain positions and piece combinations. But these tablebases are extremely space intensive, and increases exponentially as the number of pieces, and thus possible variation, increase.

Most of middle game is completely calculated by the computer without external reference. Most of the times this just involves brute force calculations that take into account every possible move available to both sides for however many turns, usually depending on depth.

Of course, programmers are still working to find good algorithms that will trim off certain unfavorable branches of variation, to save time on calculations. You can be sure that once such an algorithm is developed and perfected, it won't be far before computers beat us in all sorts of games =)

I played a Go game against my uncle today. I did really well for most of the game, and was really happy that I was able to apply the few things I've learned so far. (Net! Squeeze! Sacrifice a few, kill a bunch more!) I grabbed a nice big group by doing that. I also kept in mind to not capture things I didn't need to capture at the moment ("make urgent moves before big ones") avoided bad shapes, and spaced my stones out enough (or to the best my abilities would allow). Sadly, I sort of fell apart at the end, and made a few incredibly stupid moves, giving up a decent corner of territory and a good number of stones. My stupidity continued when I decided to try gaining the corner back, instead of just cutting my losses like I should have. I still won by a large margin (he resigned), but I could have played a lot better if I paid more attention. A few of his old groups I held off on killing came back to haunt me later, because I wasn't careful enough around them. Next time I'll probably play it a little safer, taking the extra two or three moves to kill off his bigger groups, instead of leaving them around and having them take up half my liberties.

Go's so fun. How do you find out what kyu ranking you are? Are there exams or something? Hahah. XD
I'm aiming for you, Geijukki! =D

Edit: Just played online. Oh man, I got raped so hard. XD

Essentially you gain kyu by beating those of higher rank than you in a go school.

once you're around 5th kyu or so your teacher might give you a game to see if you're worthy of trying out for amateur dan (and if you're especially good, might recommend you pro)

i wouldn't know how you gain dan afterwards in amateur, since its not organized like pro is. i'm guessing its "yeah you'd be about this good if you were pro" thing since becoming a pro go player has so many restrictions (age counts, you can't be too old =_= )

to conclude, kyu/dan is not a definite measure of strength.

1.If I was American

3.If Republicans didn't resort to "Democrats are ghey, vote for us" crap.
4.If McCain didn't try to cheap female votes by sticking in some dumb *beep* as vice prez candidate
5.If he wasn't so redneck white.

Which means, he'd have to look like Obama and be a democrat before I even think about voting for him :mellow:

I really don't like Obama. He seems like a sneaky socialist commie bastard with a silver tongue. McCain seems okay. I don't know enough about either of them to make an informed vote anyway, though. Like I said, Rhode Island = deep fucking blue.

I just don't like Obama because he keeps on talking about how he's going to help all the god damned poor people in our country. I don't plan on being poor, so he's basically telling me he wants to help people like me share our money with the world. I'll share at my own leisure, thank you. When I'm a trillionaire, I want to keep every penny of it. Except the pennies I decide to donate to the charities of my choosing. I don't care about the people who want health care and welfare. I swear to God, half of my fucking city is on SSI, and they all freaking work under the table. When you have a big screen tv and a ps3, you shouldn't be getting government help. I don't want even more money going towards people like them.
