arctan(x) = x - (x^3)/3 + (x^5)/5 - (x^7)/7 + ...
When X=1
arctan(x)=pi/4

A much simpilar theory and more practicle (though limited)
Machin's formula:

pi = 4(4 arctan(1/5) - arctan(1/239))

And it is explained. That's the closest people have come to finding out what Pi equals.
