No, you can't! It's impossible!

Imagine this. If you want to code you have to sit in a dark, damp, gloomy room with some old guy who keeps staring at your screen rambling about how "it wasn't like that in my days" forcing you to use old methods most of which are, obsolete and sometimes not even supported by your SDK anymore (which fails to compile, throws an exception and the help suggestion goes to tell you that "this crap is old, use this new one which is exactly same but has a new name")

Oh wait. It failed to compile so there's a big fat zero.

Er.... or so it was a loooooooooooong time ago. Now the ones I marked are bitching exactly the same thing I said to my lecturer. Except I told them not to use obsolete methods because it'll throw a warning and this was a mastery test(100% or 0%).

That was a nice short RanT, I haven't done one of those for years, literally :stoned:

Erm --- KyoAni has a habit of doing that.

What, the random cameo thing?

btw Suzumiya Haruhi's being delayed (yet again) since KyoAni's going hardout with what was it.. Clannad? and apparently they're having insider problems. If Akiba otaku said that, it must be true.

PorscheGTIII

Yeah, after rewatching AIR on TV, Clannad is a totally different beast. A beast that is borderline darkside. I'll withhold my final judgment until the season ends, but the end of the first season did leave a lot to be fulfilled to live up to its sibling's expectations.

edit: talking on the line of clannad, let me show you something scary, only to those who would understand.

Kanon was made and then later finished properly with a 30 min OVA, then came Air, and a reinterpreted version a la movie, then came Kanon Remake, which was a revision of the original Kanon story to better satisfy the fan's demands (the game was rereleased). Then Clannad took to the mound and basically puttered on the first two pitches, and was left before the final pitch.

..And what's wrong with Total Media Agency? Sure they do cosplay a little to the extreme (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm3158858)(don't click if you're in America and under 18; why the hell is the Kanon uniform in that video sized like a babydoll?!), but I don't find them nearly as bad as sailormoonman.

Really? On the contrary I thought Clannad was fine. IMO the story wasn't as good as Kanon's, but there's still a second season coming, which could change everything (probably will). Kyoani probably wasn't aiming to make people cry with Clannad's first season anyways, considering where they ended Nagisa's arc, when they could have easily pushed forward a little and made the show a whole lot darker.

Let's judge Clannad after After Story finishes =)

Air on the other hand was so... abstract. A lot of things weren't made clear enough (significance of the crow, for example). It's understandable that it turned out this way because they had to squish practically the same amount of content as Kanon into a series with half the length.

I can only imagine how KEY studios feels about the project...
Hmm... If I was a visual novel company, I'd actually be fairly glad that Kyoani is adapting my works rather than just leaving it to Toei.

KyoAni is an official nickname for them, though, where as TTGL is, well, an acronym, instead of a meaningful bacronym. :\

Kyoani probably wasn't aiming to make people cry with Clannad's first season anyways, considering where they ended Nagisa's arc, when they could have easily pushed forward a little and made the show a whole lot darker.

Nagisa's arc was heavily set around a particular event and eventually a particular child. Of which they did such a horrible job on the leadup to it. Her arc is only half done. They left out the meat and potatoes for the main heroine of the game. That, my friend, is just a way to stretch something. But...

Let's judge Clannad after After Story finishes =)

Alas, I have to agree with you on this one, though my opinion about the first series not being up to par has to stand until whichsuchcase that it is no longer so.

Hmm... If I was a visual novel company, I'd actually be fairly glad that Kyoani is adapting my works rather than just leaving it to Toei.

As much as I dislike Toei's products (most notably for the what they did in the first Kanon), I still can't say that they are professionally worse than KyoAni. All I can think of is that KyoAni likes to draw alien girls where as Toei likes to impresionalize stories. All in all, they're still two of the elite in this particular field. At least they're better than, say, Happinet! or some no name company.

Clannad Clannad Clannad. I'll have to see what's up with that after I've finished Air.
And I actually thought Kanon wasn't as good as Clannad, even though that seems to go against popular opinion on this board. The only part of Kanon I thought was really sad was Makoto's arc. The rest of the arcs felt forced to me; it was too obvious that the anime was a galge adaptation. I liked Clannad more, because it's been more focused so far.

I loved them both though, and Kanon made me cry....SO HARD. X3

I'm PorscheGTIII and I approve this message for the greater good of the world. XD

I recently watched Air on TV in the English Dub. Yeah character's personalities had to change to fit an English audience and some of the key lines you wanted to face---> palm but because it was in English I could comprehend all the connections that had to be drawn between the three arcs better. It's kind of like taking a class. You can try to remember things by just reading the book or you can listen to the professor lecture and appeal to your audio learning skills.

Moral of the story. Try watching anime in both Sub and Dub form if possible for the best experience possible.

No way! It's short and to the point, making it very readable for other programmers who might come in to work on the project. It also has a high amount of reusability; you'll notice that the code doesn't mention which world we're talking about here, or even what kind of end said world is up against. This code could be reused over and over again throughout the universe, to check for an infinite amount of doomsday situations. I think the programmer must be pretty highly skilled to have written something so useful.

I just bought a futon a few days ago. I just applied for a paper route. I'm searching for a crappy studio apartment! It's weird how much a show can influence me; I'd pretty much forgotten all about BSM, but I kept on wanting the things it introduced me to, even a year later. Cool, kind of. lol, white trash girl (around sixteen, fat and ugly, and eating too much anyway) talking to her great-grandmother behind me in McDonald's, in a very loud, ridiculous voice so that the 9000 year old lady can understand her:

MY FRIEND'S HAVING A BABY.
SHE EATS LIKE FIVE HAMBURGERS A DAY.
NO, SHE WON'T GET FAT. HER BABY NEEDS THE FOOD.
I WON'T GET FAT EITHER. I WALK LIKE AN HOUR EVERY DAY.
ANYWAY, I HEARD IT'S A GIRL.
BUT LOTS OF PEOPLE WANT TO PUNCH HER.
IN THE STOMACH, SO SHE LOSES IT.
THEY WANT TO KILL IT.
THEY WANT TO PUNCH HER IN THE STOMACH TO KILL HER BABY.
IT'S BECAUSE THEY ALL LIKE THE BOY SHE'S HAVING SEX WITH.
SO THEY WANT TO KILL HER BABY.
THERE'S LIKE TEN OF THEM.
I DON'T CARE THOUGH, IT'S NOT MY LIFE.
I KNOW SHE HANGS OUT WITH THE WRONG PEOPLE.
I DON'T REALLY CARE THOUGH, BECAUSE IT'S NOT MY LIFE.

I found this hilarious. For some reason, the idea of an evil society of disgruntled girls lurking in the shadows and plotting to punch a baby to death is incredibly amusing to me. Surely, punching babies to death is the only true way to express one's love for another. All the winners hang out at McDonald's!

Well, the channel managed to hold out for 2 years: all the time running awesome stuff like anime, adult swim, etc. However, at one point or another someone decided that they didn't like it, and attacked them using South Park as a pretext. However, the irony is that MTV (Rus) has been airing South Park for years and no one said shit...

Also, we have freedom of speech. However, we run a high risk of "fatal accident" if we exercise it. So we choose between our beliefs and a bullet. Only real men are offered such a choice...

Edit: Let me clarify. Over the past 5 years, the government has made the process of creating a new tv channel insanely difficult - too much bureaucracy. So the price of existing tv stations (approx. 15) immediately went up. And since this channel seems to have the least government protection, someone decided that they would be the easiest to buy. When that didn't work, "they" decided to rough 'em up a bit by trying to get it shut down.

The rest of the world is as stupid as we are

Ah fuck. Yes indeed that is the sad truth. 2006 study (yes its two whole years old. Wow it must be outdated) shows Australians with avg IQ of 60, Most of Africa at 70, Continental America (N/S), North Africa, Middle East & South Asia~Pacific at the range of 85~90, Europe&Northern Asia at 100 and Eastern Asia at 105.

A very large portion of the world is just as stupid as America indeed. Being a nation of immigrants, what can you expect? they can't be that much smarter or dumber than the rest of the world.

(ref link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Race_Differences_in_Intelligence_by_country_ (Lynn).png

*Now I'll give that Aussies getting 60 isn't quite fair, but you know.. Australia is like.. 70% of pop having IQ of room temparature(winter) and the 30% with normal intelligence..

Besides, we invent tons of awesome stuff. Computers, airplanes, cars, the internets! America sure is retarded!

Much like the Australians, except America's like.. 1% pop with IQ in the order of ten to the five or so, and the rest close to absolute zero. But we can hardly call geniuses like Albert Einstein authentic American can we?.. technically no... But things like Bush is 100% Genuine Made In USA, and so again as a nation of immigrants America's turned out awesome only because some smart people moved there and got the shit done.

Not everyone has all the resources America has. And so just like the civilisation simulation games we all love so much no resource= no development = no research = well fuck now you're invaded. (By Amercans XD) = They get even more wealthier and go on to invade another one.

And just to mention and ruin your parade "Airplane" was NOT invented by Wright Brothers. Pissloads of people(non-american) made and tested self-powered flight-capable vehicles before them, they're just the first to be "officially" recognized. Oh well, with money comes power to bribe your way into history.

*This may just be an opinion but the only reason Boeing is at the top of the industry is because USA forced Japan to stop aircraft production&design after WWII, we all know the Mitsubishi Zero was just soooooo awesome, even better than Messerschmitt(maybe USA did similar thing to Germany, never bothered to look up). Although seeing as how their cars are doing these days maybe the Japanese engineers lost their touch.. just a little.

And about the cars, I remember it was some swiss guy that first made a vehicle using internal combustion engine. and DEFINITELY BENZ WHO MADE THE FIRST MODERN VEHICLE!! BEEEEEEEEEEEEEENZ!!

As for internet and computers, well both sides were making something that was essentially the same during WWII&Cold War etcetcetc... But the Germans and Russians got stuck up with "YOU HAVE NOT ENOUGH MINERALS" or "INSUFFICIENT VASPINE GAS" and "YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS" crap. Probably.

Man its so fun rambling in GC that I lost track of time. Nothing personal though HC.

And I'm an Athiest, so I can still make fun of Americans right? or at least the pentacoastals, yay.

Edit: I had two typoes. I spelt Messerschmitt wrong and wrote addictional instead of additional. damn my IQ just isn't high enough.

I really had no idea whether or not we were the first to invent any of that crap; I was just...you know...assuming. I can't be bothered to actually do research to respond to "Such and such a country is retarded" comments. I feel a little guilty even responding to them! But yes, my main point was that people are stupid everywhere. Not really glorifying America, just pointing out that the whole world is shitty, not just the place I live. X3

@M: You know you'd rather live in Europe or Asia

I need to get more worldly, so when I insult various countries, I can at least say "I know, I've been there. That place is a shit-hole. The people there are even dumber than Americans." XD

And I'm an Athiest, so I can still make fun of Americans right? or at least the pentacoastals, yay.
Make fun of anyone you want, as long as you're being clever enough to make me laugh while you're doing so.
And jesus, Australians are freaking stupid. Maybe it's because half of them were shipped over from Britain...

OMG...XD

Whats gewgon?

I really wish people would stop it with the "America is the stupidest country on earth" crap. The rest of the world is as stupid as we are; it's not our fault we have a lot more money to exercise our stupidity with.

Besides, we invent tons of awesome stuff. Computers, airplanes, cars, the internets! America sure is retarded!
Stop using our internet to make fun of us, you god damned communist/terrorist/democrat. =P
And only the first two seconds of the video are loading for me, which is a shame, because it looks very entertaining. X3

lol, I agree with the first part of the comment to some extent.

I actually find the superiority complex that non-american's have as hilarious.

I find it kinda sad x_x

America is retarded. The fact that they've re-elected Bush is proof that at least 51% of your population has mush for brains :P

And if you had watched the video, you would have noticed that "what's oozing out of the ground" is something said in the vid, in which a dumb woman is talking about rainbows near the ground (caused by sprinklers) are created by somesort of chemical, which is because of some government conspiracy.

@M: You know you'd rather live in Europe or Asia ;)

No.
Kou took care of this.

Shhhhhh! They don't need to know that.
We know M :3 You sleep type!
(yeah right, sleep must be an alien concept to you ;) )

Agreed

*Now I'll give that Aussies getting 60 isn't quite fair, but you know.. Australia is like.. 70% of pop having IQ of room temparature(winter) and the 30% with normal intelligence..

Made me think of Tesla D: Tho I'm not too sure I know exactly how that went down.

Didn't know the Zero was that good, worth looking into.

And about the cars, I remember it was some swiss guy that first made a vehicle using internal combustion engine. and DEFINITELY BENZ WHO MADE THE FIRST MODERN VEHICLE!! BEEEEEEEEEEEEEENZ!!

True, but one must also mention Ford...

Probably.
For some reason I thought the internet was a french idea O_o Im lost it seems XD. <3 the SC tho.

Recap: Loads of people are frigging idiots, accept it. This is not based on where they're from but rather who they are. Quotes are nice, because they allow us to express our own thoughts using the words of those far more eloquent than ourselves :3

And now he's been quoted on no less than 6 online news sites in under.. 2 hours so far.

And there are emails from random people congratulating him for his 15 minutes of fame.

And offers for penis enlargements along with those random congratulating letters (don't forget the Insurance Agents, 'lonely ladies' that sit in front of their computers 24/7 and offers of "honourary" degree certificates from Universities named Ohaio, Harbard and 0xford)

And hatemail from Msoft fanboys(girls?) threatening to kill him for making a comment that doesn't glorify MS.

So we changed his ID and masked his IP and he's got himself a new email address.

Explain to me when "American's" is used.

In Chicago style, words that are naturally used in plural is included with an apostrophe s. Such as Men's (literally all of man own). This is commonly done incorrectly as Mens, which is a double plural; incorrect UK and US English.

In this case, American is in reference to the entire populous of the United States, therefore plural. As double plurals are unacceptable, to give involvement or possession of an element, an apostrophe s is added.

In this case, American is in reference to the entire populous of the United States, therefore plural. As double plurals are unacceptable, to give involvement or possession of an element, an apostrophe s is added.

So, from your explanation, I understand that you shouldn't even have added the 's to American in your sentence, since American was already a plural. I can't find anything on the 's the way you've used it, anywhere.

Plurals and Apostrophes
We use an apostrophe to create plural forms in two limited situations: for pluralized letters of the alphabet and when we are trying to create the plural form of a word that refers to the word itself. Here we also should italicize this "word as word," but not the 's ending that belongs to it. Do not use the apostrophe+s to create the plural of acronyms (pronounceable abbreviations such as laser and IRA and URL*) and other abbreviations. (A possible exception to this last rule is an acronym that ends in "S": "We filed four NOS's in that folder.")

Jeffrey got four A's on his last report card.
Towanda learned very quickly to mind her p's and q's.
You have fifteen and's in that last paragraph.
Notice that we do not use an apostrophe -s to create the plural of a word-in-itself. For instance, we would refer to the "ins and outs" of a mystery, the "yeses and nos" of a vote (NYPL Writer's Guide to Style and Usage), and we assume that Theodore Bernstein knew what he was talking about in his book Dos, Don'ts & Maybes of English Usage. We would also write "The shortstop made two spectacular outs in that inning." But when we refer to a word-as-a-word, we first italicize it — I pointed out the use of the word out in that sentence. — and if necessary, we pluralize it by adding the unitalicized apostrophe -s — "In his essay on prepositions, Jose used an astonishing three dozen out's." This practice is not universally followed, and in newspapers, you would find our example sentence written without italics or apostrophe: "You have fifteen ands in that last paragraph."

Some abbreviations have embedded plural forms, and there are often inconsistencies in creating the plurals of these words. The speed of an internal combustion engine is measured in "revolutions per minute" or rpm (lower case) and the efficiency of an automobile is reported in "miles per gallon" or mpg (no "-s" endings). On the other hand, baseball players love to accumulate "runs batted in," a statistic that is usually reported as RBIs (although it would not be terribly unusual to hear that someone got 100 RBI last year — and some baseball commentators will talk about "ribbies," too). Also, the U.S. military provides "meals ready to eat" and those rations are usually described as MREs (not MRE). When an abbreviation can be used to refer to a singular thing — a run batted in, a meal ready-to-eat, a prisoner of war — it's surely a good idea to form the plural by adding "s" to the abbreviation: RBIs, MREs, POWs. (Notice that no apostrophe is involved in the formation of these plurals. Whether abbreviations like these are formed with upper- or lower-case letters is a matter of great mystery; only your dictionary editor knows for sure.)

Notice, furthermore, that we do not use an apostrophe to create plurals in the following:

The 1890s in Europe are widely regarded as years of social decadence.
I have prepared 1099s for the entire staff.
Rosa and her brother have identical IQs, and they both have PhDs from Harvard.
She has over 400 URLs* in her bookmark file.

*The jury still seems to be out on whether URL (acronym for Uniform [or Universal] Resource Locator), the address of a Website on the World Wide Web, should be pronounced like the name of your Uncle Earl or as a series of letters: U*R*L. The information technology experts at the college where I work use the "earl" pronunciation, and one would have to ask why you'd want to say "you-are-ell" when a simple "earl" would suffice. In either case, though, the plural of URL would be spelled URLs. The New York Times, by the way, would insist on U.R.L.'s because their style guide requires that everything be capitalized in headlines and URLS would look dumb in a headline. So use URLs unless you're writing for the New York Times.

So, from your explanation, I understand that you shouldn't even have added the 's to American in your sentence, since American was already a plural. I can't find anything on the 's the way you've used it[;] anywhere.

No, I said that you HAVE to add an apostrophe s when the item in concern is already plural and requires ownership. What you said is that when something is plural it already has ownership. This is very much incorrect. I think either you or I missed something in my last statement, so I'll try it again.

Americans is double plural and is not the same as American's. It is a different form of the word, as it means the ownership/involvement of the entire populous. Keeping it as American is to refer to one or many beings that is such, but not anything in regards to what they own or not own.

The way you are saying that you use apostrophe s is after an acronym, ownership in one or groups, and for contractions. These are all correct, but not exhaustive. There are words out there that are not defined in the above, such as the double plural issue (as addressed and exemplified above), polycontractions (such as wouldn't've, previously deemed as incorrect grammar and has recently been adopted), induced ownership (She is going to the bathroom because her purse is broken).

Let me try to show you this way.... Do you say the African's or Africans? German's or Germans? Same word tense, same problem.

Each item brings about a question of what exactly it is you mean about the mass in question. Do you mean it in as a bunch of the mass — which would mean double plural, which is okay, but not the direct meaning we're looking for — or the ownership of the mass? The easiest way to illustrate ownership/involvement is to add apostrophe s. Without it, the word can only be induced to have ownership, but that's a bad idea as it is a vague way to show it as so.

I'm not saying that you're wrong. I'm saying that the way I construct my English is different from the way you construct your English.

Irregardless, this is all semantics of how one uses a language that is constructed as crazily as how the French spell their words. The only difference is that the French have rules, whereas English keeps morphing into a more and more confusing language.

Unless used as contractions, apostrophes mean possession.

M, this is your sentence:

I actually find the superiority complex that non-american's have as hilarious.

The 's is just wrong there. It's non-Americans, because Americans is the plural form of American (and non obviously states that it's the people who aren't Americans).

If you want to use "American" without an s as a plural, add "the"

I think the American is hilarious.
You talk of one American who is hilarious

I think the American are hilarious.
This automatically implies that you mean the American people, making it:

I think the American people are hilarious.

However, in your case, it would have to be:

I think Americans are hilarious
You can't think the word "people" in there, because Americans is already plural.

There is no way to use "American" as a word for the whole population without adding "the" in front and thinking "people" or "population" after it.

You could say "I think America's people are hilarous" but in your sentence, that wouldn't work either, because there is no such thing as "Non-America's people".

Unless there is some weird rule that does approve of your 's in your sentence, there's just no way it can be right.

Americans is double plural and is not the same as American's. It is a different form of the word, as it means the ownership/involvement of the entire populous. Keeping it as American is to refer to one or many beings that is such, but not anything in regards to what they own or not own.

Americans isn't a double plural. It's one American, two Americans. One American's arm = the arm of one American. It indicates ownership and nothing else.

Kou
September 23rd, 2008, 03:23 pm
.......

Americans is technically wrong, it was considered double plural in a somewhat strict way, you aren't supposed to add 's' to make plurals out of countrymen(?)

.. otherwise in a very strict sense you're saying the plural of Dutch is Dutchs. or some form of thereof. Chinese, Chineses? Korean, Koreans that sort of sounds right but the others don't do they?

But since a whole heck of a lot of us lost that somewhere between grammar and colloquialism now no one cares if we just say Americans and I'm rather inclined to believe that it is dictionary certified now?

So who gives. Its Egrish. W''r' 'll r'ght?

Edit: in conclusion I reckon M is correct. we're actually talking of a possession of the American(s) here, so the apostrophe belongs. If you were being picky Angelic you could say Americans', but as explained above American's should be the case.

"I actually find the non-american's superiority complex hilarious."

If we arrange it this way maybe its easier to see.

How on Earth is "American" plural? Look it up in a dictionary then.

noun
1. a native or inhabitant of the United States
2. the English language as used in the United States [syn: American English]
3. a native or inhabitant of a North American or Central American or South American country

"American" simply isn't plural, at least not in the way you used it. You can say "I have my way of writing and you have yours" but you haven't shown me anything that actually proves me wrong and you're right. Unless it's some abstract American way of writing it, it doesn't exist in common English.

If you want hard evidence, then I cannot provide it, but then again, what about the other ten percent of English that is undocumented (implicit clauses, polycontractions, proper sentence fragments, prose structure, abstract constructions)? Those aren't document, but they are used and often. I'm certain the dutch language has many language rules that are not written down, but are still used.

Apostrophes are used to indicate the posesson, or to replace missing letters. I've seen them used to make plurals out of acronyms (e.g. CPU's), but you don't use it to make "American" plural.

For the third time, I don't want to make American plural. IT ALREADY IS!

I'll try it from a different angle again. From what I've learned, when you're referring to an ethnicity, you're referring to either one or all in which depends on how you refer to it. From as that stands, American is enough to say more than one, as stated by . When I said non-American's, this is the same as saying British, Russian, Chinese, Australian, ...; everything BUT American. This means that it is plural as I'm referring to all races except one. Did that make a bit more sense?

For the third time, I don't want to make American plural. IT ALREADY IS!

I'll try it from a different angle again. From what I've learned, when you're referring to an ethnicity, you're referring to either one or all in which depends on how you refer to it. From as that stands, American is enough to say more than one, as stated by . When I said non-American's, this is the same as saying British, Russian, Chinese, Australian, ...; everything BUT American. This means that it is plural as I'm referring to all races except one. Did that make a bit more sense?

:sigh: Regardless... [I'm going to leave that open]

It makes sense, but it doesn't seem right to me

Basically you divide the world in 2 groups:

1.) Americans (the American people)
2.) non-Americans (the non-American)

Since "the American" is already plural, and adding non- in front only makes it the opposite, it is non-American, not non-American's. It doesn't matter that they are many other races (even though they are different nationalities, not races, but anyway..). The moment you put all of them opposite the American people they become one group, namely the non-American people, hence the 's isn't required and even incorrect.

How on Earth is "American" plural? Look it up in a dictionary then.

Okay. I'm just going to add more because my original post from a bystander's point of view seems to have been completely ignored.

Original argument: the apostrophe. A quick check on Microsoft word shows no grammatical errors with either having or not having the apostrophe. Will refer later

Second argument: Plural of American. I'm not going to say Americans is grammatically incorrect. Heck even I say Americans. But this entire argument is in a technical sense (because that's what it's all about. Technicality and pride. Neither one of us want to admit we're wrong, even though neither of us have complete mastery over English. We all defend what we've been taught)

Then I'm just going to ask again, What is the plural of Dutch? Japanese? British? French? Malaysian? New Zealander? (Just to cover all, or at least most of, the common "suffixes" we add to mean a person of the nation)

Of those I will honestly admit I'd find Malaysians and New Zealanders plausible and have heard and used them myself. But I can't imagine myself applying such to the others. And I don't believe there is a special rule regarding plurals of such words.

I firmly believe with conviction that it's a case of "one sheep, two sheeps" from citizens of continental America that have gone deep enough in our spoken language that even our dictionary has decided to find it acceptable. But that still doesn't mean "two sheep" is completely wrong.

Maybe one day it will come when the correct plural of mouse becomes not mice but mouses. Who knows.

Going back to original argument, possession is being discussed (American(s) and superiority complex) So I believe an aphostrophe wouldn't be incorrect, even if it does look awkward and I wouldn't use it myself. (because of "have" being in there. Replacing American(s) with some other pronoun would make it sound even more awkward)

Maybe archaic form of grammar did force use the apostrophe in such cases.
(Maybe his was spelt he's a long time ago?)
Maybe because the word 'have' there implies possession and therefore you're not supposed to add the apostrophe. I Do Not Know.

In conclusion I personally would've wrote the same sentence "I actually find the superiority complex that the non-american have as hilarious" If I was to write in that specific word order. But I wouldn't scream at "I actually find the superiority complex that non-americans' have as hilarious" for incorrect grammar, as I neither have the complete knowledge nor evidence (for or against) to argue its correctness any more than what I've written.

** Unless a firm hard evidence by something a lot more trustworthy than Wikipedia is thrown at against my argument I will no longer bother to correspond in this bookfight. It's damn stupid and the only reason I entered was because of the shot at plurals. I've been taught it as American, was told both is acceptable now in terms of spoken language. Language evolves. Especially a bastard one such as English.

Microsoft Word...

*stab*

I hate my word processing class.

EDIT: Not because it's hard, but just the sheer volume of work... and then the teacher doesn't even grade, we upload the work to the web and a program grades it, but the program is stupid and corrects things that are already correct and gives false grades.

EDIT2: mmm... green tea...

*glances at the clock*

Time to head off so I can get to class on time. *waves*

Around 5am today, someone claiming to be someone who was there to take my mother's car back to the dealer almost basically ran my mother and me over w/ her own car. According to my mom, he hopped the gate and opened and tried to leave w/ it, my mom hearing it, went out and tried to asked him what was going on. He just said he was there to take it back since it was deemed stolen due to unpaid bills which was crap since they would always notify us if we were late. So when my mom was trying to get her stuff from the car, he took her keys, pushed her and jumped in her car. She yelled for my name and I woke up wondering what the hell was going on and saw him trying to run her down. I tried to help her push the car back but hurt my right arm a bit. He ended up driving off like a manic and left w/ it. We called the cops and everything. I'm like, so pissed and now what the hell are we gonna do now? We also had money in the car, like 500$, her medical stuff and other personal items and I swear if anything of it is missing we're gonna sue. ._.

ctually, the car was reported stolen and he was there to take it but it must be some mistake because we wasn't notify about it. The cops were no big help really since they're trying to treat it as a he said she said thing. Also he supposed to go in there and take it w/out the car's owner knowing but seriously, if you don't show you info and basically try to act like it gta, of course you're gonna be like wtf and try to stop em. This whole thing pisses me off. ._. My arm still hurts.

The reason Word doesn't tell you it's wrong is because American's indicate something that belongs to Americans. The American's point of view - the point of view an American takes. American being single, not plural, in this case. Word can't pick that kind of grammar up.

You guys keep talking about language evolving, but that's just an excuse to use incorrect grammar and claiming it to be correct. I've studied English in university and I got shot by my teacher every time I used an apostrophe in a plural word in English - which is a pain especially for me because in Dutch you do it all the time with plurals (auto - auto's (car - cars)). I've always learnt however, in English, you only do it with abbreviations (CD - CD's) and nowhere else.

"Dutch" in itself isn't an entity. It tells something of what you're talking about, in this case Dutch people. You can say "The Dutch" because it's actually "The Dutch people". People is the plural here, not Dutch. Same for American (or non-american) in M's sentence. The actual word that should be plural, which is people, isn't there. Hence "American" itself can never be plural. Ever.

You can't use Microsoft Word for checking grammar... it's not THAT reliable.

Following possibilities, pick the one that you meant to use :p

1) American (one person from America)
2) Americans (several people from America, or the people from America in general)
3) American's (possessive of one American person)
4) Americans' (possessive of several American people)

Only real exception to this rule I can think of to this rule is "it's" and "its". I haven't looked the sentence you're talking about anyway, lol.

Oh, and about the other nationalities, yes it's kinda like the "one sheep, two sheep" thing. The British. The Dutch. The Americans. The Singaporeans. The Japanese. The Chinese. The Australians.

But really... I AM an English teacher. I actually went to a GRAMMAR school.

You can say "The American" to talk about the people, but that's what your doing, talking about the people. So, in your mind, you're actually saying "The American people" but you leave the word people out.
