insect, bird, great white shark, polar bear, from, snake, most fish

Endothermic = animals which are able to internally regulate their own body temperature independently of the environmental temperature. Endo means internal, and thermic is to do with temperature. Therefore, internal temperature control. They have physiological adaptations which help them maintain a constant body temperature regardless of how hot or cold it is. These adaptations are called homeostatic mechanisms and they include things like dilation/constriction of the blood vessels (vasodilation/constriction), sweating, hibernation, hair standing on end and so on.

Ectothermic = animals that are unable to internally regulate their body temperature. From ecto, meaning outside. It means that these types of animals have to alter their external environment in order to keep their body temperature constant or develop ways to survive lethal drops in temperature. They do have some physical and behavioural adaptations to help them with this but they don't have any internal mechanisms to maintain their core body temperature. Examples of physical adaptations include the ability to expand their surface area exposed to the sun to heat up more of the surface blood vessels, and the ability to change colour to affect how much light they absorb/reflect. Examples of behavioural adaptions include moving from shade to sunlight or vice versa, holding open the mouth to improve air circulation in the head region, thermal dancing (planting opposite sets of feet on the ground with each step so all four feet aren't in contact with the hot ground at the same time), and resting in burrows/under rocks at night.

As for why temperature is so important, it's because the enzymes responsible for the metabolic processes keeping organisms alive require an optimum temperature at which to work. If this temperature isn't maintained then metabolism will be affected which will decrease the organism's chances of survival.

Sooo...

Insects - Insects are generally considered to be ectothermic, as they are invertebrates and therefore have a low metabolic rate, meaning they can't really generate sufficient internal heat to maintain an optimum temperature. Some insects like bees and moths can generate extra heat by pumping their wings to get their muscles going, but for the most part insects are reliant on changing their environment to survive. Either that or going into a kind of suspended animation when it gets too cold.

Bird - endothermic. They can fly, and therefore generate heat through their wing muscles. They also fluff their feathers to insulate themselves, vasodilate/constrict, shiver, pant and migrate to warmer climates.

Great White Shark - endothermic. This is one of the few shark species that can internally regulate their body temperature. They can do this because they have surface blood vessels that can be dilated or constricted. They also thermoregulate by migration.

Polar Bear - Endothermic. They hibernate during winter, and fluff up their fur to insulate themselves.

Snake - ectotherm. Low metabolic level, so they don't eat very often. They thermoregulate by moving in and out of shade or burrows, and some can flatten themselves to expose more surface area to the sun.

Most fish - ectotherms. Again, a low metabolic level. They can't vasoconstrict to retain heat because gas exchange takes place across the surface blood vessels on the gills, so doing that would reduce their oxygen intake. They generate heat by muscle action (swimming) and by migrating to warmer waters.
