I want to try picking up Japanese again...does anyone know of any relatively easy-to-read manga I could try out? Preferably in romaji, since I don't know any of those demonic scribbly characters our friends from the East make use of. =D
I think it would help me memorize basic phrases and things if I was reading something entertaining (and with pictures) instead of just hitting a boring textbook over and over again, you know? Obviously I'll need to refer to boring textbooks a lot to get through the manga, but I think I'll be more motivated to look things up if I have the goal of finishing an interesting story in mind.

Thanks, if anyone has any. :)

@doxy: Spiky CREATED the RP, then was booted.

@HC: most manga is either in the language of translation or direct Japanese, no romaji. Try watching anime? At least learn hiragana and katana. One problem from watching things is that a lot of the time they use informal terms, and you don't learn like, speech etiquette (eg, "boku" for boys and "watashi" in general when referring to oneself). And if you end up speaking like a yakuza member and go to Japan, you're probably get smashed.

Yeah, I figured that was the case. (I mean, romaji manga would be pretty useless to anyone besides people trying to learn the language.) I thought I might get lucky though, so I asked anyway. Well, does anybody have any easy manga with a bunch of hirigana and katakana, along with healthy amounts of furigana?
That's probably the best I'll ever get, right?
I'll take anything you guys have though. If what you send me is too hard, I'll just have something to look forward to reading. :)
Just drop me a PM! :3

And I'm not worried about talking like a yakuza member. If people give me any trouble, I'll just get a bunch of tattoos and stuff. It'll be fine. Besides, I have no delusions about learning Japanese solely from manga, in a week, and then running off to Japan or anything like that. I just want to start learning the language again, and it'd be nice to have something entertaining to help keep me interested.

M
May 8th, 2008, 04:20 am
Continuing, that's about 3.77 liters of tea a day. For every cup of a dehydrates, you need to drink the weight amount of that in water to stop dehydration. So, adding that to the standard quo of what a person should drink in a day:

1.9l + 3.77 = 5.67 litres of water.

That's 5.67 Kg of water.

If the tea was not a dehydrant, you'd be into hyperhydraiton.

Oh, by the way...I have no idea how reflections in water work. For example, why is it that puddles reflect the blue sky when I'm far away, but turn transparent when I get closer to them? arcsin(x) is the simple way to write sin¯¹(x), which is a simplier form of (sin(x))¯¹

And reflections in water is as simple as using the translucent optics equation (snells equation --- n2Sin(Ø) = n1Sin(Ø) --- and the lens equation --- f¯¹ + o¯¹ = i¯¹ ---combined). It's easiest to do the lens drawing first then apply snells equation.

........and optics hurt my eyes. <- corny pun

Damn anti-michigan slang! Ya = you!

Does that help?
lol, exactly. I was just going to say, an apostrophe would have changed everything. X3
I'm trying to learn Tabidachi nishi e, from Princess Mononoke. I'm having a lot of trouble with the left hand part when it starts to pick up. It jumps from low E to middle C over and over again, and my hand can't keep up.

Edit:
Also, I'm making a simple console program that accepts user input and does stuff with it, while constantly updating a clock in the background. The problem I'm having is that I'm using Console.Read() to read the user's input, and Console.Read() freezes the program in place until a button is pressed, so the clock obviously can't update constantly, as Console.Read() keeps stopping my program every time the program loops.

So now I'm looking into using two threads: one for the clock that needs to constantly update itself, and one for the main program, that sits around waiting for user input, and then acting on it. Should I be using multiple threads for a program like this, or is there a simpler solution I don't know about? M? I'm guessing that multi-threading is the way to go, as I don't see how my program could keep track of the time and check for input at the same time without using two threads.

Threading is the only way to make two things happen at once in an application. You could do it with ReadLine and (p|n)curses/TTY with a timeout settings, but it's overly hasselsome when threads handle it with minimal effort. You were on the right path.

Ah, thanks. I figured that threading was probably the way to go; I was just a little worried about it because I've been using XNA to make most of my programs; XNA does all the multi-threading I've needed up until now behind the scenes, so I wasn't sure whether or not it was actually...you know...using multiple threads, since I've never looked under XNA's ridiculously-too-complicated-for-me hood.

Nice to know my common sense was right though, and that I was going the right way. Thanks again, M. =D

Edit: Yeah! Awesome day! I just finished a five hour block of programming, and I was playing piano and programming on and off (but mostly on!) all day today. And it was fun!

if(something is true)
{
do something;
}
else
{
do something else;
}
And that's basically all programming is. You just evaluate expressions, and then act on them. Of course, the more complex a program you're building, the more clever you have to be. There's nothing magic about it though; anyone can learn a language pretty quickly if they have the time and effort. =D
I suggest that everyone try a language at least once though. Programming is surprisingly fun, and only gets more fun as you get better at it. (Like music, or any other art!)

There is some magic involved. It's just that it's not impossible for most people to become wizards, though becoming awesome an wizard probably is beyond the scope of most people. Simple to start, nigh-impossible to master! Programming for the win! And once again, programming is the same as any other art in that respect. For example, I'd say learning how to play piano is really easy, but learning to play well takes an amazing amount of time and effort.

checked my alarm to make sure it was set correctly, and it was.

Note: If your alarm clock goes off and you get up and don't have to turn it off, look at what time it is before you get ready to start your day.

I'm flattered that you think I have the potential to write that C application, but I'm no where near that much of a virtuoso. One of my main problems with what I code is that it's in SIMPL (http://www.crestron.com/products/show_products.asp?jump=jump&model=sw-simpl), which is similar to digital logic circuit board design and uses unique symbols. Even then, there is no wide panned out view of the development suite that I can show you. Further yet, I simply hack my boss's code 90% of the time, so there's nothing really of my own that I've developed for my job to show XD.

I did a few things in Java, but the only really useful application is a Calculator app, in which I only designed the GUI and someone else did the algorithm (source is on office computer).

I have been working on a FileDump application using Ruby-Gnome2, and I do have the source for that here. It doesn't do anything quite yet, but I'm hoping to make it so that you provide a regex find and a regex rename for all files in a source directory (checking for duplicates using sha/md5 | date check) and move them to a particular folder given their file name. The source code to that can be found here (http://mies.pastebin.com/m64f06baf).

As I said, it doesn't really do anything right now, it's just me messing around with GTK and learning the ropes behind the ToolKit.

Dearest One,

Permit me to inform you of my desire of going into business relationship with you. please don't be offended with this mail as i know not every body will like having such a strange mail in his address, since we have not known each other before, I come across your contact and I prayed over it and ask God to show me someone who is honest and reliable that will help me, I must not hesitate to relate every part of this relationship to you for you to understand me very well, and know how to advise me on these.
My name is Johnson Amed, I am the only Son of late Mr and Mrs Morgan Amed. who was a very wealthy cocoa merchant in Abidjan the economic capital of Ivory coast during his time, my father was poisoned on a business trip to sudan and he came back with that sickness that led to his death, My mother died when I was a baby and my father took me so special. Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been planned by my uncle who travelled with him at that time, but God knows the truth!

Before the death of my father on 12th of january this year in a private hospital here in Abidjan he secretly called me on his bed side and told me that he has the sum of $6.500.000.00 (Six million Five hundred thousand US dollars left in fixed/suspense account in one of the prime bank here in Abidjan, that he used my name as his only child as the next of Kin in depositing of the Money. He also let me know that it was because of this wealth that he was poisoned by his senior brother and business associates. That I should seek for a foreign partner in another country where i will transfer this money and use it for investment purpose such as real estate management or hotel management. that is the reason why i contact you hoping that God will give you the knowlegde to advise me more on these, I am honourably seeking your assistance in the following ways:
(1) To provide a bank account where this money will be transferred.
(2) To serve as a guardian of this fund since I am only 21years.
(3) To make arrangement for me to come over to your country to further my education and to secure a resident permit in your country.
Moreover, i am willing to offer you 20% of the total sum as compensation for your effort/input after the successful transfer of this fund into your nominated account overseas. please, you indicate your options towards assisting me as I believe that this transaction would be concluded within one week, please indicate your interest to assist me in these regard.right now, I am in a guest house because of my uncle, he wants to destroy everything my father has garthered because my father is no more, I have to live the house for him as he treat to harm me. i am in a guest house now for my safety that is why i am on my knees for God sake asking for your urgent assistance.

I am expecting to hear from you soonest,

Depends on your taste though. Suppose you were to choose, would you want a thoughtful, surreal experience, or a popularized version?

M

Personally, I liked the overall product of 2006, but 2002 did a better job with the ending (i.e. the key equation was left untouched).

My opinion: Watch 2002 then 2006; do watch both though. They offer different perspectives on the story.

The girl is only one in the world.
That made her the god of this world.
She found herself on an island when
she began to understand things around her.
There was a mansion on the island,
which was connected to an old castle by a passageway.
She did not know why for what purpose those structures exist,
which completely seemed to be unfit for the environment that
were build there.
And besides, the girl never wondered why because
she had been there before she realized.
There were a huge amount of preserved
foods and daily necessities inside
the warehouse of the castle,
so she did not have to
starve ( although she was hungry
until she realized there were eatable).
But she almost died several times because of sickness and injuries
.In most cases, she almost got herself killed by eating either
spoiled food or plants and inorganic things around her.
She used the mansion as a residential area,
and almost never set her foot in the old castle.
There was no particular reason to draw a line between the two structures.
It was only a rational judgment that the old castle was unfit for her to live there.
She did not need to know why.
She had nothing to do.
The island was small,
and one could go around it in half a day by foot.
All she could see at the beach was the ocean,
the sky,
clouds and the horizon stretching as far as she could see in a 360-degree view
That was everything the world offered...
She painted a human being, and ---- whether it was well drawn or not.

Her memory seems to be getting better(she knows who we are), she hardly lost any mobility in her left side, although she has a little difficulty with her left eye. She is having trouble remembering some things though, like what she had to eat for breakfast, where she put her checkbook, who called her to check up on her earlier, my saying I had to go to work tomorrow, etc.

Her talking is great too, we're very fortunate it was a light stroke. She's on iron pills, vitamin-B12, a blood-thinner, and vitamin-C. (For 6 weeks, then she needs to go in and have surgery on her carotid artery.)

Yeah, I can't imagine that being much fun. At least you get to take classes on this stuff, though (as I'd like to); I was a lazy jackass in highschool, so I'm stuck at my community college for a few years, which has none of the classes I want. The only programming class they offer is "basics of programming," which a friend of mine took. From what they said, it's not worth taking. Oh well!

Even with classes, I can tell I'm not totally cut out for this. I'm definitely more of an art person than a programming one. Maybe if I try hard enough, my brain will bend to do both for me. X3

Most places don't offer many different languages. Usually it's a compiler language (c(++) - USA / ocaml - commonwealth), a bytecode language (.NET/Java/ocaml), and a UML course; and that's all the language you get. Scripting languages are talked about, but not always taught. I suppose they feel that if you can compile code, you can script code; even though that's a big philosophy turn on the coder.

The only reason I'm getting all (syntax - 12, programming - 5) the fancy languages now at about is because I'm taking independent subject courses.

Hah, I hear that. I hated not knowing what I was doing, and just memorizing things by rote, but programming languages are too big to do otherwise until you learn them for awhile. Happily, I'm at the point in C# where even though I still suck and don't know what I'm doing half the time, I can usually figure out why things are working or not working if I take some time to study my code carefully.

It's still a pain in the ass, though...
