I decided to make a new one by copying his picture and began to edit it when all of a sudden a block of text splattered right on the picture, saying "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING OMG I Am GOING TO KILL YOU", and I immediately close the window. Then I head to irc and then Paradox was screaming at me saying why was I "stealing" his work and that work was worth millions and that he will sue me and make my life hell. Another girl was with him as his "accomplice" and I was like "fuck you para, you cant sue me I only EDITED your work and have not even submitted it yet", and yet Paradox still goes on and then sends his agents in WoW to me and annoy the crap out of me saying how I am a loser and a stealer, I ended up hearthing out of this island and landed in ironforge and then I closed the game, and then I had a convo with my grandma, and she was like why are you so stupid now we're gonna get sued and we will lose the house and then I said "wtf, IT WAS JUST A DRAWING I CAN ARGUE AGAINST IT IN COURT" and she said, "hell no you cant. He just used every trick in the book against you and you will live as his slave" and I responded "wtf" and woke up.

This could be a dream thats telling me of whats going to happen in the future. PARADOX I AM ON TO YOU!!!!!!

Get an expensive hobby that takes lots of time. I used to pass my summers with Warhammer, computer games, exersize and doing jobs for the family. Digging the alotment took a good few days.

Wtf guys. I need some C# help. I'm trying to animate a texture, using my awesome Image class, but it doesn't work for some reason. This is the update method I'm trying to use:

When I use that, my program draws the first frame of the animation, and then seemingly hangs there. The animation stops....animating at the first frame.
Just for fun, I changed the update method to:

I bolded the change for all of you. That code snippet animated my sprite, but at hyper fast speeds, obviously, since it changed the source of my sprite sheet everytime my program ran that update method.

Any help? Does anyone know why the first isn't working when the second does? I can't spot any problems, and I've been debugging this stupid program for hours. I'm getting very sick of it. XP

For reference, "source" is the variable I'm using to store a source rectangle in, to tell the program what part of my spritesheet I want it to draw. FramesList holds 29 seperate source rectangles. I'm using frameNumber to cycle through the source rectangles as the frameNumber changes. >_>

Edit: Oops, solved my problem. The line of code I needed was:

frameNumber += (float)gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds * framesPerSecond;
not:

frameNumber = (float)gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds * framesPerSecond;

I misunderstood how .TotalSeconds worked. It takes the Total Seconds since the last update, not since the beginning of the game, which is why my game seemed to be hanging, lol. D:

So now my sprite animates slower or faster depending on how high I put the frames per second. The only problem is that the animation keeps on skipping a bunch of frames. Is there anyway to fix that? I'm sure somebody here knows. = \

I don't know what you mean, sadly. I don't know what a scancode is, and I only have a vague idea of what buffering is because of my shaky 3d art background. I'm using Microsoft's XNA framework, so a lot(probably an extreme a lot) of lower level tasks are taken care of automatically. I have next to no C# experience, and am fumbling around unimpressively and comically. You wouldn't happen to know how to fix my frame skipping problem, would you, M? I seem to have two methods of keeping track of time: the amount of time since the last update, and the amount of time since the start of the game, in seconds and fractions of seconds.

Annnnnnnnnnd, I still haven't solved my problem. I made the mistake of thinking it would be easy, when of course it isn't. I tried doing....this:

frameNumber = ((float)gameTime.TotalRealTime.TotalSeconds % 29)*framesPerSecond;

There are 29 frames in the animation in all. I figured the frameNumber should be equal to how many seconds have played*framesPerSecond, so I wrote that down. Of course it doesn't work though, as I still seem to be skipping frames because of the way C# rounds when I cast frameNumber as an integer before assigning it to source. I think. XP

And now I'm sleeping again, because I woke up way to early because I thought that line of code would work and it didn't. I'll try something more clever when I get back up. XD

I'm also not sure how the modulus works. It looks like it only returns whole-number remainders? That would be a problem too. Actually, that probably is the problem with the code I just posted. If that's the case, maybe I could use total milliseconds instead of total seconds?

That site doesn't provide debugging help. It just offers syntax highlighting, optional diff files, and free hosting of the text. It's very useful for these kinds of sessions when there isn't a built in syntax highlighter in the forum environment.

Also...

As it stands, I haven't changed anything from the last time I posted the code. All I did was make it modular so I could compile it with and without the main program. #define makes a boolian true, where #if tests that, and #endif stops that if statment. #define name alias makes the name of something have an alias.

Thus, the #define SANDBOX #if ! SANDBOX #define TotalSeconds gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds basically means that if I do not have a defined varible called SANDBOX, then give the varible named TotalSeconds the alias of gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds.

This is done all in precompile time. Think of it as a method to debug the code, without having to change anything when you put it back into the main program, nor causing a preformance decrease or increased compile size.

If it's the #region that's confusing you, just think of it as a way to define a section of code without delimiters or special indents. It serves another purpose, but I used it as I explained in this example.


I have a generic programming convention between all languages, so it is a little... different from the usual conventions you see in a generic or specialist language file. Mine is a mixture between GNU, K&R, and Pasal styles. Not to mention, I hate the tab key. It's the devil.


In all honesty, though... I don't understand how adding a constant varible inline to your frames incrementor will help slow it down. I mean.. As it stands you have an iterator1 += (iterator2 * constant) % constant. Regardless of all this math, you want the left most value to increase in whole steps (1..29). I don't see how preforming any type of math will slow down or control the advancement of the frame. Rather, I think a wait function that is dependent on the system clock should be used.

Ah, I understand now. I was just wondering what all the pound symbols were for. They're to define pre-compiler code then? I should know already from when I did C++ a while back (six years ago?), but whatever. I remember using #include in all my programs now that you mention it. The using statement takes the place of #include in C# though, if I'm not mistaken?

You don't hate indenting, do you? It makes everything so much prettier looking, hahah! Visual Studio C# has been indenting everything on its own pretty well for the most part though, so I haven't had to use the tab key much.

Edit: Ah, also M, I notice that you're using a fair number of System.Console methods, but I don't think I can use them in my image class. From what I can see, I can only use the System.Console class's methods from inside the program's Main method. Is there any way to fix that, or is that just how the Console class works?

Never said that. I indent, and quite cleanly, as the code posted above shows. What I don't like is the actual tab character and its size. A single solitary space is defined quite well from editor to editor. But a tab varies from 2 spaces in length to 8 spaces in length. Some do recursive tabs (the ones that move only after you exceed its maximum padding), others do explisit tabbing.

It's annoying to me.

Thus I follwed the GNU standard, which is basically you indent two spaces (not tabs) on each indent. Not only does this fix the tab character issue, but it also fixes deep coding where you're 7 if statments in, and you want to see all of the lines written without scrolling to the left or right.

I also do a single space hanging indent for the delimitor in multiline delimited statments. You can spot the top statment very easily that way. I also use one line delimiters for single line resulting conditionals. If there is an if-else that is just one line, I use the ?: operator. I use C comments as they are the only commenting scheme that is guarenteed between different compilers. I also try to wrap the text at around 80/85 or so characters in length, as that is a standard 8.5x11 sheet's width for monospaced text.


Also, I use emacs or vi to write my code. So the auto indentor is configured to my tastes already :bigsmile:
