Macs have less software support than Windows does, especially when talking about games. Linux has even less.

Saying "ooooo, Windows locks up once a year!" or "Omg, if you visit a thousand shady sites with Windows, while being stupid enough to not have Norton enabled, you'll get a virus!" or "Holy shit, Windows uses a whole 80MB of your 2 gig of RAM lol!~!!" does not negate the cold, hard, terribly cruel fact that Linux and Macs can't run half the crap that Windows can.

Linux is cool because it's free, and does some very neat stuff because of all the different people developing different versions of it.

erm, Im gonna go ahead and be a n00b here, but:


Macs have less software support than Windows does, especially when talking about games. Linux has even less.

This is not an OS specific problem, rather a developer specific problem, afaik you can build most applications to run on most OSes, however when propietary technologies are used this limits your OSbase.

ex games:

DirecX vs OpenGL. Developers can choose one, however DirecX is MS's so only they can use it (bar the "translation layers" such as Cedega and wine, that dont emulate but provide some of the elements needed for the programs function)

At the end of the day (afaik) Developers could create their software to be cross platform, but choose not to (be it pressure by MS or soemthing else I ignore...I dont know) BSD (OSX is based on it afaik) and Linux...are somewhat tied if im not mistaken, but can also be completely diferent animals.

Blizzard is an example: WC3 and WoW have been OSX/Windows Hyrid disks.

Then theres programs like Modo (OSX/Win) and Maya (OSX/Win/not sure about linux)

I think its possible to have platform independent software, the problem is MSs dominance in the market, developers CANT justify costs of porting/also writing their applications to other OSes because of the limited benefits they would see, most of the porting/paralell development costs would not be covered by benefits, thus creating more losses...which nobody wants.

Actually, most software that user's /like/ are NOT cross platform.

Why? Because everyone loves a gui; and all but GTK, TK, wx, and Java are OS centric. And, let me tell you, compared to the OS graphics library, the aforementioned GUI systems are really. damn. hard. Similarly with programming libraries. The OS provided libraries to manipulate objects inside a program is so much prettier than cross platform ones.

Now, if everything was CLI, then there would be little to no issues. Sure, windows doesn't have the beautiful ncurses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ncurses) system to make console based applications pretty, largely and most noticeably seen in console-based games such as nethack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nethack) or the advanced VI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vi)/emacs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emacs) editors. Um, this probably isn't the right place but I need help to save my pc. I got a lot of errors and stuff on it. (299 at the moment and says my registry health is low) and I don't know what to do really to fix it. I used a registry booster though before that Dark Bring suggested but it was just the trail version and I can't buy the full version due to no card. Is there anything I can get to fix my errors? My pc been messing up a lot lately because of them. (computer shuts off at time and restarts, sometimes the internet will die [forcing me to restart] among other things).
